NBA legends due, scout for opposition
By Joaquin Henson The Philippine Star Updated June 28, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - An 11-man team mainly composed of NBA legends will play a game at the MOA Arena on July 18 but nobody knows for sure against whom even as tickets are now on sale with a price range from P500 for general admission to P5,000 for patron VIP and the chance to meet the visiting stars.

A source said the initial plan of forming a UAAP All-Star selection to face the legends was scuttled because it wasn’t likely that varsity teams would allow their players to sign up with the season set to start July 14. Forming a PBA All-Star squad or tapping even just a pro team is also not an option as the league will be in the thick of the Governors Cup playoffs by then and besides, July 18 is a PBA game day.

Smart Gilas team manager and MVP Sports Foundation project director Butch Antonio said he was contacted last weekend by organizers from the MOA Arena to find out if the national squad could play the legends. “At first, we were invited to practice at the arena then they asked about our availability to play the legends,” said Antonio. “Something like this has to be cleared with top management and the players themselves so there are no commitments at the moment.”

A viable alternative is to match the legends against the Philippine team scheduled to compete at the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on July 3-7. The composition of the national team is still up in the air although a 24-man roster has been submitted to SEABA. Smart Gilas coach and MVP Sports Foundation executive director Chot Reyes will discuss the make-up of the SEABA team at the PBA Board of Governors meeting today.

“Our SEABA team will be back from Chiang Mai by the time the legends arrive,” said Antonio. “But the players are committed to us only up to the SEABA tournament. We don’t know if some of them are going on vacation or doing rehab or enlisting in a boot camp to prepare for the PBA draft. We haven’t received a formal request from the MOA Arena for the national team to play against the legends so nothing is final.”

The SEABA team will be coached by Joseph Uichico and the players in the final 12-man cast will come from the 24-man pool. Among the players in the pool are Smart Gilas veterans Marcus Douthit, Chris Tiu and Aldrech Ramos. The pool reportedly includes 10 players from the PBA which must approve their participation for SEABA.

At least four officials from different UAAP schools said it will be difficult to form a collegiate All-Star selection to play the legends because the season will already be in progress. With the PBA out of the picture, the best option is to bring in the SEABA squad but even that has to be worked out with proper clearances.

The visiting team is made up of 6-7 Scottie Pippen, 46, 6-7 Dennis Rodman, 51, 6-5 Mitch Richmond, 46, 6-7 Bryon Russell, 41, 6-10 Cliff Robinson, 45, 6-1 Jason Williams, 36, 6-10 Horace Grant, 46, 6-6 Alexus Foyle, 33, 6-5 Chris Campbell, 31, 6-4 Jeff Trepagnier, 32, and 5-11 Charoy Bentley, 23. Pippen, Rodman, Grant, Richmond and Williams played on NBA title teams. Coach is Hall of Famer Oscar (The Big O) Robertson, 73.

Robinson is the longest tenured NBA player in the cast with 18 seasons of experience. Next are Pippen and Grant, both with 17. Richmond and Rodman played for 14 years while Russell 13 and Williams 12. Campbell, Foyle and Bentley never played in the NBA. Trepagnier suited up for Cleveland in 2001-02 and Denver in 2003-04.

A highlight of the tour is Robertson’s coaching debut. He was with the US team that won the Olympic gold medal in basketball in 1960 and played on the Milwaukee Bucks squad that captured the NBA crown in 1971. Robertson is the only NBA player ever to average a triple double in a season – 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists in 1961-62. The NBA named Robertson the Player of the Century in 2000.

Rodman, Grant and Richmond were previously in Manila on basketball-related trips. Rodman played on five NBA title teams with Detroit and Chicago. Last year, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

They are selling tickets but the Phillipine side team has yet to be determined..

The UAAP/NCAA players are not available as NCAA Season are running
The PBA players are not available as they are in thick of battle on the playoffs
Smart Gilas 2 is composely mainly of PBA players so they alos are not available.
PBA D League players wont likely sell the idea

The mostly likely team that can match the Legend Selection are the

The SEABA team compose of some of Smart Gilas 1 (Chris Tiu, Marcus Douhit, Aldrich Ramos)
The Air Asia Patriots Team out of contention in the ABL (Anthony Johnson, Nakea Miller)

Poor Planning on the part of SM Management....

will not be surprised that they'll play the San Miguel Beermen of NU Consultant Bobby Parks if ever they win the ABL Championship. But the team could be reinforced by Thomas, Brock and Pringle of the Warriors plus Johnson and Miller of the Patriots.

fyi .....

Hodge and Ellis also played before for the National Team...they also should be included

they only played at the sea games wherein their papers were not scrutinized by the fiba-asia officials.

Then its time of an essence that every fil-foreigner in pool and prospect present and future including this hodge and ellis as well as those high schoolers in the US 16 yrs and above MUST BE Applied to FIBA for Dispensation or else SBP wont get any grant notification for this selected and future players...

Ellis and Hodge would be an easy case because they already have played Dleague and National teams

Check the case of Isaac Fotu of new zealand

......SBP should start doing the paper works to every prospect 17 yrs and above...as for the 16 yrs and below then SBP should start doing Proactive works for their passports.

and the letters would be sent directly to GEneva not throught Hagop...

its not that easy as it looks.

a lot of the players belong to families who citizenship in the foreign countries are still in process and they would rather not jeopardize their chances to become citizens of their new home.

Plus a lot of money are needed to make this happen. Unless we get more help from the Government and Private Sector, we cannot accomplish much.

With PNoy failing to show-up on the send-off event where he was supposed to make a inspirational speech for our Olympic-bound athletes, it shows Sports is the least of his and the government's priorities.

wow, the president itself doesn't show up on the send-off event of our athletes.

Well the SBP can start with Ellis and Hodge at most for the Filing of Dispensation to FIBA...once its granted the SBP can work on to the rest of the pool that are already committed in the Philippines (Players in the Dleague or College)...Pringle if he has plan to play in the Philippines should start playing in the Dleage so the SBP can have a case for him for Dispensation....

Little by Little and Few Selected ones could be a start.

As for the 16 yrs old and below..SBP , PSC and POC should meet and have an agreement with DFA...and the rest of the work would be the respective embassy for information dissemination.

as I mentioned in the past we are working on something but we are not rushing things as here in Asian Sports it is so political that we do not want to antagonize the majority. We'll make the move at the appropriate time.

Problem there are more countries in FIBA who are more inclined to go with the interpretation of Hagop. This is the reason for Mullens pull-out from the Great Britain Olympic Team. http://www.hoopsfix.com/2012/06/byron-mullens-a-no-go-for-great-britain/

Looking forward to it :)

and by the way me too experience this political thing specially with Lebanese here in the middle east.

its sad that there is a sudden rise in politicians world-wide who are against mixed-marriages and are promoting the purity of race.

lolers! lucky monfort!
Noob SM!
Who wants to watch a Philippine team with monfort on it?
T!@#$$# naman. Tatanim sa isip ng NBA legends "is this what philippine basketball is all about? poor them wishing to top asia with these kind of players"
(while looking at monfort).
and its like parang binastos the NBA legends. They will be fed with players who are like team D/team E of the Philippines.
You invited Queen Elizabeth to visit your home,And she did! Then you'll offer her some boy bawang. wtf lolers

SM should provide their own players. lolers
what a joke of an event this is gonna be. lolers

Do people really believe that fans will troop to the MOA Arena because of the opposition? ;)

Do people really believe that fans will troop to the MOA Arena because of the opposition? ;)

This reminded me of the Harlem Globetrotters in their heyday ..... many pay big money to watch them and no one questions on who the hell are these Washington Generals, Boston Shamrocks, New Jersey Reds, Baltimore Rockets, or Atlantic City Seagulls they are playing against. After all the fans come to watch the Globetrotters and not their opponents.

For Gilas ..... win or lose against these Legendary Oldtimers it would not improve their game nor boost their confidence. More so that this game would be played NBAish and at an All-star competitive level and not the kind of International Game that it should be getting used to.

Do people really believe that fans will troop to the MOA Arena because of the opposition? ;)

no. But still its better if the opposition can give a show or at least make it look like a basketball game instead of a shooting drill with taga pulots and dummy defense.

and as if rodman pippen and co. can still do flashy dunks and amazing moves.
you'll spend thousands to see pippen do a layup? maybe if you really wanna see them live. but for people in the far side of the court, those in the gen admission, 500 pesos to see them do a layup??
Most of them would enjoy feeling the newly built MOA Arena than watching the game.

Ask Jeffie. :D

True true quality of this game will not be very good. But some people will still spend five thousand bucks just to be there. Truth.
