Meteors trounce Landmasters

Games today:

Cebu Coliseum
5 p.m. – MisOr Meteors vs. Trace-Laguna
7 p.m. – M. Lhuillier-Cebu vs. Mandaue Landmasters

A team with championship experience proved to be too much to handle for a squad that was formed just a day ago.

This was the story yesterday as the reigning champions Misamis Oriental Meteors torched the Mandaue Landmasters, 83-64, in the preseason of the Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Meteors, replete with new and towering players that brought with them ample firepower from the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), continued on their quest to defend their title as they blew out the hastily-formed Landmasters which, according to head coach Jun Tan, was formed just last Sunday.

They leaned on the exploits of new players Melvin Mamaclay and Patrick Cabahug, both of whom were key in their second half breakaway. Mamaclay, a former player of the Sta. Lucia Realtors by way of Adamson University, scored five consecutive points in the third period that helped the Meteors extend their 11-point halftime lead to 16 heading into the final canto, 62-46.

He ended up with 14 points while Cabahug, also of Adamson in his college days and formerly of the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, added 12 points.

The Landmasters tried to get back into the game in the fourth stanza as they trimmed the lead down to just 10, 54-64.

However, Misamis Oriental responded with aplomb as they unleashed an 11-1 run that blew the winds out of the sails of the Landmasters.

If the plan will push through, Cebu Landmasters will be a new addition to the southern teams together with Montaña Davao. And it will become a history for the Boholanos as former BIT Supercruisers top scorer Ferdie Lusdoc is going to play for the Landmasters. In fact he played in the Cebu Pre-season tournament that includes Cebu ML, Laguna, Meteors and the Landmasters.

Money and meteors!

Games today:
(Cebu Coliseum)
5 p.m. (For 3rd place)
Trace Laguna vs. Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue
7 p.m. (Championship)
M. Lhuillier-Cebu vs. Misamis Oriental (championship)

THE M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños and the Misamis Oriental Meteors proved that it is not the season of giving yet as they battled tooth-and-nail for the precious victory, even in a non-bearing game of the 2009 Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 Pre-Season tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The host team came through with a dramatic 69-66 victory in a very physical, electrifying and emotional game. The winner-take-all championship game unfolds at 7 tonight.

Battle

The two teams took their cue from the battle of the winless two hours earlier, where the Trace Laguna Stallions scored 30 points in the final quarter to complete a come-from-behind 93-88 win over the Cebu Landmasters-Mandaue squad.

M. Lhuillier and MisOr battled hard from the opening tip-off with the Meteors, taking a quick 5-0 lead.

The three-point shooting of the Niños turned the tide around as they came back blazing with a 27-8 answer to lead 27-15 at the end of the first.
MisOr bounced back in the second.

Leaning on the offensive prowess of Neil Rañeses and Erian Daja, the team took back the lead, 39-37, early in the third quarter.

Lost opportunity

Though the Niños reclaimed the lead quickly with Woodrow Enriquez doing most of the damage, they lost one valuable ally going into the final game today—point guard Mark Ababon, who re-injured his shoulder and is a doubtful starter in today’s championship match.

With the players banging bodies as if there was no tomorrow, at the sideline coaches Raul Alcoseba of the Niños and Jun Noel of the Meteors also did their side of the show, fueled by their coaching staff and supporters.

Today, Alcoseba’s defense will be centered on the three-pronged offensive thrust of Noel—Rañeses, Patrick Cabahug and Melvin Mamaclay.

For the Liga Pilipinas people, would this still be shown on Solar Sports?

MLKP routs Meteors

By Rommel C. Manlosa

IF COACH Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is to grade the performance of his M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala squad in last night’s Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 Pre-Season championship—his rate would be 9 out of 10.

“I told the players that even if this is just a pre-season tournament, we need to make an impression,” Alcoseba told reporters after the game.

M. Lhuillier won the knockout championship match with an overwhelming 71-61 decision over its arch-rival the Misamis Oriental Meteors at the Cebu Coliseum.
The host team did not allow the Meteors to gain momentum after the visitors led 6-4 at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter.

“We still lack some players. I am waiting for the results of the PBA draft where we are going to hire three players. There’s a 6’7” Fil-Am...I hope we can get him if he will not be drafted and I need more wing players and another shooter perhaps. We will go big in the next conference,” Alcoseba said.

Alcoseba took the lessons from the Game 5 loss to the bigger Misamis Oriental Meteors in the Conference 2 finals last April to heart, and he moved Marlon Basco to the wing position.

With a bigger and more aggressive line-up, M. Lhuillier did not allow the Meteors to creep within the “panic” range, keeping the Misamis Oriental squad at bay by at least two points.

M. Lhuillier chalked up the biggest lead of the game at 48-34 before the Meteors, led by Neil Rañeses, suddenly burst to life to cut down the lead to 51-53 with 1:21 left in the third.

Leader

But the Cebuanos did not allow things to get worse as they quickly regained their composure and held MisOr scoreless until the 5:14 mark of the fourth and reinstated an 11-point lead.

Melvin Mamaclay and Patrick Cabahug each nailed a triple on MisOr’s quick 10-2-run for a 64-61 count but Enriquez gave M. Lhuillier the breather with a three-point play
and two free throws to seal the win.

Enriquez again lead Cebu scorers with 18 points. Bruce Dacia and Stephen Padilla each scored 12 and Ariel Mepaña picked the right time to shine with 11 points for M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala.

3rd conference of Liga Pilipinas to have new playoff format

Cebu Daily News

First Posted 12:42:00 08/02/2009

SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director and Liga Pilipinas commissioner Noli Eala promised an exciting and vibrant third conference of the community-based basketball league when it opens on Aug. 19 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Eala, who was joined at the press conference by SBP officials Perry Martinez, Bernie Atienza, Rico Meneses and Joey Bautista along with M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos head coach Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba yesterday, announced that a brand new format will be adopted for the playoffs this season.

The playoffs will now be called the "Super Leg Final Round," which will involve five teams in a single-round robin format.

Of the 10 teams, the top two will automatically qualify for the aforementioned round while the remaining six others will engage one another in several knockout games. The third seed will face the eighth seed; the fourth will take on the seventh seed and the fifth will battle the sixth seed.

The top four teams in the "Super Leg" will face one another in a knockout crossover with the winners finally taking on one another in a winner-take-all championship game.

"We are looking for ways to make the league more active and more vibrant," said Eala.

The Liga will also welcome newcomer Mandaue Landmasters while the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts have taken a leave of absence. Iloilo has also shifted locations with their transfer to Bacolod. 10 legs have been scheduled this season.

In addition, a partnership between the Liga and the Philippine Basketball Association is on the working table. The Liga has proposed that PBA teams adopt a Liga team as their sister squad where a "beneficial exchange can happen."/Correspondent Jonas Panerio

i hope to see mandaue landmasters to stay in liga and then ferdie lusdoc may get ample playing time so that he strut his wares and show what he's made of. if he can stay in the liga and the proposed merger will materialize then he can make it to the PBA.

can we ask for update with liga pilipinas with the teams and players?their website at Liga is not updated hope u can also download games of conference 3 at you tube so overseas workers can also watch the games

Is there any possibility that Liga Pilipinas would be using FIBA Rules in their tournaments? Just askin.

i think that's what they are using ever since the league started about more than a year ago.

Well good thing that Sir Noli had the initiative. I have seen one game in NBN4 but sadly I haven't been able to watch at least 2 mins of it since it just happened that we are passing by the surplus store where it is being shown on one of the TV sets. :)

Liga opens Conference 3 in Cebu
By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) Updated August 18, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Liga Pilipinas, the one and only home-and-away basketball tournament in the country, raises the curtains for its Third Conference tomorrow with a twin bill in Cebu City.

Liga Pilipinas president Noli Eala yesterday said he expects tougher competition among the 10 competing teams which will vie for the crown in the Super Finals in November.

“I’m proud to say that despite the difficult times and the economic difficulties of some companies we’ve been able to maintain a 10-team roster,” said the former PBA commissioner.

To make the operations more viable for the competing teams, he said the league is introducing a new competition format based on how the FIBA runs its international tournaments.

The 10 teams (four from Luzon and three each from the Visayas and Mindanao) will figure in a single-round robin. The top two teams will be seeded to the Super Leg while six others will dispute the three other slots to the Super Leg.

Another single-round robin will take place with the top four teams moving on to the Super Semis (1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3), and eventually on to the Super Finals set sometime in November.

Eala bared the new format along with LP technical director Perry Martinez, operations chief Butch Antonio, marketing man Rico Meneses, business developments head Joey Bautista and Bernie Atienza of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Opening games will pit Laguna versus Quezon and GenSan versus Cebu. Games will be covered by Solar Sports and aired on the delayed basis over Viva Prime.

The other competing teams are Pampanga, Taguig, Mandaue, Bacolod, Zamboanga and defending champion Misamis Oriental which defeated Cebu in the finals of Conference Two.

Liga to convert self into farm league

08/18/2009

If plans don’t miscarry, Liga Pilipinas could become the country’s version of United States’ NBA Development League (NBDL).

Liga Pilipinas commissioner Noli Eala yesterday said he is planning to convert Liga Pilipinas into a farm league where the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) could send its players for further development.

Under the proposal, which will be brought to the PBA through its chairman, Lito Alvarez of Burger King, PBA teams will be given a chance to adopt a Liga Pilipinas squad where it could lend its players for further exposure and competitive training.

Liga Pilipinas Conference 3 starts on Aug. 19 in Cebu City.

Aside from Cebu, also seeing action are Pampanga, Quezon, Laguna, Taguig, Mandaue, Bacolod, Misamis Oriental, General Santos and Zamboanga.

"Though it’s not urgent, it’s a good way to expedite the growth and progress of Liga Pilipinas," Eala said during the press launch of the fledgling league. "We have a ‘competitive agreement’ among leagues to help each other, because in the end, it will benefit the entire Philippine basketball."

Eala also said the upcoming Conference 3 of Liga Pilipinas will showcase a Fiba-based format where the top two teams in the elimination round will be seeded for the "Super Leg" along with the three survivors in the wildcard phase.

Like in the Euroleague, the top four squads in the "Super Leg" will advance to the single-round "Super Semis" where the top two will qualify for the "Super Finals."

Fiba-accredited foreign referees will also be invited to officiate in the Finals.
