Riyadi Beirut went to the top of the Lebanese league with a 75-69 win over traditional rivals Champville at Manara Sunday in round three of the final eight. A win for Riyadi meant jumping to first place following Sagesse’s loss Saturday but Champville were boosted by the surprising arrival of Iranian international center Asghar Kardoust.
The home side began brilliantly, with Loren Woods on the scoreboard early on. He finished the match with 18 points, 13 rebounds.
Riyadi found it all too easy to break through their opponents’ defense, with Egyptian veteran cutting to the basket to extend their lead to 10 toward the end of the first.
Karl Sarkis did his best to keep the visitors in the game, especially that Champville’s star Fadi al-Khatib wasn’t in his usual scoring form.
Riyadi were treated to a moment of silence when Ahmad was forced to leave the court following a calf muscle strain eight minutes into the match.
The Beirut side were also missing Ahmad Ibrahim, whose season is over due to a compressed brachial plexus. But Riyadi were still able to lead 25-16 at the end of the first.
Kardoust entered the match in the last seconds of the opening quarter, and he soon showed his footwork, beating Woods for a basket that brought his side within seven early in the second.
But Riyadi were rampant and Champville had no answer as good defensive work from Woods allowed Ali Mahmoud to set up Amir Saoud for a 3-pointer. The home side proved they weren’t solely dependent on Ahmad, as they opened a 15-point deficit 37-22 with four minutes to go.
Only Sarkis and Kardoust were able to find their way to the basket from Champville, with Khatib failing to score more than one point in the first two quarters.
Riyadi went into halftime with a 46-31 lead.
The hosts began to falter in the third without their Egyptian star, and inaccurate shooting cost them dear as Champville refused to lie down and started a fight back.
Khatib, helped by Kardoust and Sarkis, began to show his worth offensively, as the gap evaporated to only five at the start of the fourth.
The final period was a close affair, as Champville continued to surge thanks to two 3-pointers from Khalil Aoun, which gave his side a rare 69-68 lead.
But Ali Mahmoud replied with another three, and Jean Abdelnour tipped in another decisive basket that wrapped up a pivotal win for Riyadi who moved into first place alone for the first time this season at 19-2.
Alongside Woods, Omar Turk contributed with 13 points, while Abdelnour added 11 points and nine rebounds, Ali Mahmoud also had seven points and seven assists.
Sarkis had game-high 19 points, while Khatib and Nikoloz Tskitshvili each added 13 with six rebounds and six assists for the former.
Kardoust marked his debut with 12 points and six rebounds.
Champville remain tied in third with Mouttahed, who played out an entertaining win over seventh-placed Bejjeh 66-62.
Saturday, Byblos produced a shock 75-62 home victory over Sagesse.
American Jay Youngblood top scored with 31 points and five rebounds, while Mike Fraser dominated with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Omar Ayoubi was also a key player with 14 points and five assists.
Deshawn Sims and Aaron Harper had 16 each to cap off the worst offensive night for Sagesse this season. Sagesse slipped to second place at 18-3.
