In Which Countries, is Basketball the # 1, National Sport

Dreamcatcher, I cant believe than in Russia, basketball is not in the top 10, with so many good basketball team and players develope in that country.

One more thing, congratulations for the gold medal of the U19 in Latvia.

I wish could see Puerto Rico playing in that tournament, but unfortunately they did not qualify. Even thoe, we have good talent.

It's surely not popular. I guess not top10. According to their TV in 2009 year, top10 sports among audience were:

1)Football
2) Hockey
3) Biathlon
4) Figure skating
5) Track and field
6) Boxing
7) Martian arts
8) Skiing
9) Handball
10) Tennis

There wasn't even volleyball which is surely more popular than basketball.

You're on crack or something?

basketball is for sure number 3 or 4 for sure

and in turkey basketball is number 2 100%

Please someone explain me why I created a thread about " football VS basketball" and someone decided to combine it with this thread???
It's different subject ! It's not about the number 1 sport
,it's just about the difference between bball and football, who's bigger!
I don't care about hockey/pingpong /chess.....

I have been in Russia before and I can say basketball is not popular in that country.Hockey, gymnastic, individual sports are more popular...

Agree, those were actually separate subjects and the threads shouldn't have been merged.

Ball games first

Ball games first

I think basketball United States was the first, baseball is Taiwan do you think ·?

100% wrong. It's surely hockey after football. Basketball is not popular there at all. It could not even be top10.

C' mon, Yes, Ice Hockey is nr. 2 in Russia, but basketball not in the top 10?

This is from Wikipedia:

'Among the most played sports in Russia are football, ice hockey and basketball. Other sports widely played in Russia include team handball, weightlifting, gymnastics, boxing, wrestling, martial arts, volleyball, rugby union and skiing.'

I read russian sports webs...And sometimes people who comment...If we look on TV audience, it's surely not top10...On the other hand, basketball is quite rarely shown there...

No need to be so personal or insulting.

Dude.. chill.. whats the problem with you? Why are you so aggressive?

Basketball is clearly nowhere near top sports in Russia. Why are you so offended by that fact? Jeez..

Kazan who is good team even in Euro terms gets like 200-300 people per game.. on a good day.. in the domestic competitions.

I don't think you can judge popularity only by TV ratings, especially after paid-TV showed up and you can hardly see international or local games on free channels (in Russia payed NTV+ package f.e.), so it hardly shows the real situation. You must add tradition, general interest, people who practising it and etc. Bball in Russia is surely in Top10 with all these components added and maybe even in Top5
