According to SBP's ally in Cebu:
‘Slaughtered hearts’
By Rommel C. Manlosa
GREG Slaughter’s reported transfer to Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles will break the hearts of the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the Cebuano basketball fans who want to see him least one more season, an official said.
A national daily reported that Slaughter, who helped UV win three of its last nine Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. titles, is set to play for the Eagles.
Although UV admitted it cannot stop Slaughter from moving to the Blue Eagles, the transfer will mean turning his back on his commitment to the school that gave him his break.
“It will be unfair (for UV) because when he will be playing in the PBA, he will be known as an Ateneo player, dropping and forgetting where he started first,” UV president Eduardo Gullas said in a press conference at his office yesterday.
However, according to Gullas, Slaughter told him he has yet to decide on the matter and that he needs the help of the people close to him.
“Greg told me he needed to consult a lot of people, his mom and dad in the US, his uncles in Cebu and some basketball luminaries, before he can come up with the decision,” said Gullas.
A lot of schools in Manila have been courting the service of the 6’11” Fil-Am for quite sometime. However, Ateneo has the edge as the school’s major backer, Manny Pangilinan, is also the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
SBP runs the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas National Team, in which Slaughter plays a major role.
“When MVP personally asked my blessing for the services of Slaughter, I had no second thoughts. I gave my permission to allow Slaughter to play for Gilas because I know what it can give to him. I had no doubts with the sincerity of the request because it has always been the policy of UV that when service to the country calls, we will always give in,” Gullas said.
Although Gullas admitted he cannot stop Slaughter from accepting the offer to play for Ateneo, his only wish is for Slaughter to be serious in his training with the Gilas squad and to finish his studies—preferably at UV.
“He only has one more year to finish his BS Business Admintration course here. My only advice for him is to be serious in his training with coach (Rajko) Toroman and to finish his studies (here at UV) because basketball is not forever,” said Gullas.
However, if Slaughter will decide to play for the Blue Eagles--he still needs to serve a one-year residency before he can play in the UAAP.
Slaughter and the rest of the Gilas team are currently abroad for a series of training sessions and friendly matches.
