Chinese CBA's Shaanxi Kylins will play in IBL starting on April 18, based in Oregon. CBA would be done in March, Shaanxi, a non-playoff team will definitely finish earlier.

Unlike Beijing Aoshen Olympian who pays for its own expense to play in ABA, it seems that the sponsor of Shaanxi's IBL campaign is the US Basketball Academy, which has had a very good relationship with CBA. They are responsible of conducting the annual CBA import draft camp, and most attendees were IBL players. USBL also has sent numerous teams to China for warmup games, and has hosted a bunch of Chinese youngsters, including Tang Zhengdong and Chen Jianghua in 2002. They hosted the Chinese U18 teams last year for a few weeks, and I believe that team had scrimmaged against IBL teams.

Seems like instead of sending individual youngsters to compete in the American high school/whatever leagues, they are sending entire teams to compete in the minor league basketball system... I don't know. Hope they do well, but won't do much to help the current state of Chinese basketball and help them win any more medals or move up in the ranks in the world.

Plus IBL competition isn't exactly top notched, so they'd better at least have a winning record.

Even if Shaanxi brings the 2 imports in ex-NBA player Hiram Fuller and NBA camp invitee Brandon Robinson, it's going to be extremely tough to win any game for them. Shaanxi's local players are not even close to the same level as Aoshen's. So far all their CBA victories are at home, and it often requires the imports to pour in triple doubles or 40 pts. Moreover, I think IBL has far less "weak" teams than ABA, their level compares with the upper echelon of ABA.

Shaanxi has 3 somewhat decent local players -- about average in CBA -- in a 6'8'' forward Zhang Wei, 6'6'' forward Liu Jiulong and 6'7'' 3-point shooting center Tian Yu (not sure if he will still be part of the team since he was on loan). Their 6'3'' point guard Dai Yong can shoot some, but is just horrible otherwise. 6'8'' He Ben is a young player with some potential but nothing special. The rest are not even worth mentioning; I am however interested in 7'2'' skeleton Zheng Zhun in its developmental squad. He has not played in CBA but reportedly can run well and shoot well.

Wang Yong played for China's B team in last year's Asian Championship. He's a serious talent: 6-8 or so, runs extremely fast, great handles for his height, great shooting touch, very good athleticism. The problem is he has NO heart and NO confidence, and also shies away from contacts, being the skinny kid he is. He has played in CBA for a number of years now while he's above average, has never really distinguished himself in any way. Wu Yang and Luo Xu Dong are both 2nd year players. Luo is a diminutive guard and Wu is an undersized center/PF. The one probably with the best upside is a rookie named Cai Liang, a 6-8 forward probably no more than 18 years of age, but displaying a toughness and athleticism for his skinny frame. He'll still need A LOT OF improvement to become a star in CBA, but the talent is there.

Shanghai Sharks finished 13th out of 16 teams in CBA despite the persence of NBA prospect Xu Yong, NT captain Liu Wei, former Amerian prodigy Jerod Ward and ex-NBAer Anthony Pig Miller. Which shows you how good the other players, most of them rookies/sophomores, are.

Hiram Fuller is a strong player but is really a temperamental guy back in the leagues he previously played in.

On the other note, He should try his some luck in the US or in other open Asian leagues where he can relate himself to. But then it will be a matter of handy paperworks for him...

Just like Sun Yue is supposedly the Chinese Magic Johnson, sounds like Wang Yong could've been a Stephen Jackson/Joe Johnson player or even a Carmelo/Lebron of the CBA. Unfortunately you made it clear he suffers from the Kwame Brown syndrome.

Do you know if Yao Ming ever talks to these guys? Gives his fellow Chinese any good advice or pep talks.

Explosion pound on fatigued Chinese

Shanxi Zhongyu, an IBL expansion franchise from China, endures a long flight, then a long bus ride before losing to Snohomish County.

MONROE -- The next time you hear a coach or player gripe about the travails of a long road trip, consider the odyssey of the Shanxi Zhongyu.

Starting with a 15-hour time difference, the Zhongyu left their home city of Taiyuan in Shanxi Province and flew to Beijing for an overnight layover before making a 17-hour flight, via Tokyo, and arriving in Portland on Saturday morning.

From Portland, the Zhongyu made the four-hour bus ride to Monroe High School and gamely battled the Snohomish County Explosion for a full quarter before succumbing to fatigue and falling 122-84 in their International Basketball League debut Saturday night.

"The players are young, they're fresh and have energy so it's OK for them," Shanxi coach Yang Wenhai said through a translator. "We come here to learn and get the chance to play against American players."

"My hats off to them," Explosion coach Randy Redwine said. "I can only imagine how hard it would be to travel through so many time zones for a game."

Alex Adediran (29 points, 14 rebounds), Chris Keller (22 points, seven rebounds), Chris Weakley (20 points) and Justin White (18 points, nine rebounds) provided sufficient firepower for the short-handed Explosion to improve to 8-6 on the season.

Snohomish County's leading scorer Donald Watts missed the game due to illness. Point guard Jamal Miller (shoulder) and center David White (ankle, lower back) were also sidelined.

"It was a great team effort, maybe the best effort I've seen by the team this year," Redwine said. "It was great to see guys step up with key players out."

Shanxi -- which is playing a modified IBL schedule of at least 12 games after having recently completed its 2007-2008 Chinese Basketball Association season -- was impressive in an opening quarter that featured 10 lead changes and ended with Snohomish County clinging to a 31-30 lead.

Jet lag apparently caught up with the leg-weary Zhongyu in the second quarter as they struggled with turnovers, shooting woes and got man-handled on the boards.

The Explosion broke the contest open with a 20-3 run over the first eight minutes of the tell-tale period, highlighted by 3-pointers by Weakley and Keller and a thunderous fast-break jam by the recently-acquired Adediran who had 17 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

The visitors mustered a 6-0 run to close to within 51-39 with just under three minutes remaining in second quarter.

The Explosion responded by closing with a blistering 12-2 run, capped by Keller's 3-pointer at the buzzer that provided a comfortable 63-41 lead at the break.

Shanxi opened the third quarter with a spirited 10-2 run behind the slashing Yu Tao who led his team with 23 points. After twice closing to within 14 points, Zhongyu faded and trailed by 24 entering the final period.

Yao Ming's legacy: The Chinese Basketball Association is the premier league of China. Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets holds the CBA record for blocked shots in a game (13). The 7-foot-6 NBA All-Star is also credited with the all-time outstanding single-game performance for an effort during the 2000-2001 season that included 49 points (keyed by a 21-for-21 field goal shooting performance), 17 rebounds, six dunks, six blocks, three steals and two assists.
