Courtney Sims good for Smart Gilas?

With top naturalization prospect Dwayne Jones and Brian Butch out of the picture, Smart Gilas Pilipinas is now setting its sights on Courtney Sims as the team’s reinforcement in its quest for an Olympic berth.

Sims, a former D-League MVP who happens to be Smart Gilas’ Serbian coach Rajko Toroman’s original choice for naturalization, is reportedly now available after being released from Capitanes de Arecibo of the Puerto Rican League.

“We’re exploring every possibility and exercising all our options,” said Smart Gilas manager
Frankie Lim.

Meanwhile, Smart Gilas lost to Serbian League’s No. 1 team Partizan, 71-87, and fell to 1-4 (win-loss) card in their Serbian Tour. (UPDATE: Vizura def. Smart Gilas, 75-70)

The Serbians opted to play with just five members of their first team with rest coming from their second squad. But the hosts still dominated the smaller but gritty Filipinos, who put up a gallant stand before losing steam in the final five minutes.

“They were scoring from inside and outside. We had problems executing offensively and lost in the rebounding battle, 20-42. We shot poorly from outside and couldn’t convert our fast break attempts,” said Smart Gilas captain Chris Tiu.

reports from facebook and twitter..:D

update:

former prospect earl baron started for the knicks today and scored 17 points and grabbed 18 rebounds (44 minutes of play) in their win against the celtics.. i saw him shooting midrange 15foot jumpers and made most of them..

wow! good thing he made it back to the NBA.

did you ask him?:D

hmmm... i wonder if gilas coaches have also tried scouting someone from serbia during this tour... someone from division 2, maybe...

it's hard finding serbian big men...the good ones are already in contract with a pro team as early as 15-16 years old....language barrier could also be a hindrance (except for coach toro of course)....

I wonder if that Marko Prljevic kid (who's reportedly enrolled at EAC) is any good.

how about that serbian 7'3 tree from partizan :D:D kidding..

one serbian poster says that he is not good..

The search continues and the prospecting seemed to have been harder than we ever thought.

No doubt Frankie Lim is feeling the pressure now as while the jelling and preparation of Smart Gilas simply intensifies day in and day out, the hunt for a naturalised American player continues to hound the overall preparation of Smart Gilas, tasked to bring back the Philippine flag in international basketball.

Reports said that Dwayne Jones is now headed to the NBA, losing what could have been a big catch for Gilas.

However I believe such is a blessing in disguise for Gilas as based on reports and also on the manner how I saw Jones play in the D-League, his focus is really to make it in the NBA.

It could have been more of a disaster rather than a benefit having Jones with Gilas. We have to understand guys that being a naturalised player is a far more committment of play than just simply playing as an import overseas.

With the way Jones has focused himself to the NBA, I do not think he is ready to take a long-term commitment being an adapted citizen for a country dedicated and commmitted to regain basketball supremacy.

Reports said that former University of Michigan Wolverines standout and Puerto Rican league (BSN) import Courtney Sims is on the radar of SBP as there are unconfirmed reports that he has been released by his Puerto Rican team Capitenes de Arcibo.

I tried searching for confirmed reports if indeed Sims has been released by his current mother team but there is no official report available.

However, there has been several unfortunate events happening to his team Capitenes de Arcibo that could have led to Sims' departure with the said professional Puerto Rican team.

Capitenes de Arcibo was competing in the current 2009-2010 Premier Basketball League, this league is a professional tournament for commercial teams in North America. Capitenes was running second in league standings (14-3) when the PBL board of governors decided to expell Capitenes from the league.

The reason for the dismissal on Capitenes is failure to adhere to league rules, failing to show up in road games and deliberate miscommunication with PBL organisers. The assumption is that Capitenes is lacking in funds that is why they have failed to show up in road games, there were reports also that Capitenes has left some unpaid bills of their hotel accomodations in Quebec and Maryland during road games.

Courtney Sims was signed up by Capitenes last March 10 replacing old import Walter Hodge for their PBL stint, but because of the dismissal, Sims was only able to play 3 games for Capitenes. After 3 games for Capitenes in the said PBL, Sims registered 22.3 pts per game (second in the team) and 14.7 rebounds (first in the team).

After their dismissal from the PBL, life continues for the Capitenes de Arcibo team as they participated again in the new season of the Superior Basketball National (SBN) in Puerto Rico (the PBA version of Puerto Rico).

Capitenes is currently leading the league with a 7-3 record.

However, while the Capitenes team has played ten games now in the league, record shows that Courtney Sims only played 5 games. What is more intriguing is that Sim's stats are way way way below the numbers he registered from his PBL stint to that of the SBN.

This could really mean that Courtney Sims has already left Capitenes de Arcibo and may have been looking for any takers right at this time.

Courtney Sims was never drafted in the NBA even though he was one of the vital cogs for the Wolverines which paved the way for their runner up finish in the NIT tournament in 2006.

He played as a journeyman bench player to several NBA clubs and became an NBA D-League MVP in the 2008-2009 season.

Scouts described Sims as a very athletic player that has great size, nice lenght and decent frame. The 26-yr old is said to have a good basketball sense, creating some heady post-entry passes on high/low plays.

Scouts added that Sims is more developed as a offensive player while his defense is a suspect.

Sims has great footwork underneath, has finesse moves and can create his shots. However the hole in Sims' game is his lack of defensive intensity. Scouts said that Sims would easily give out position in the paint and is slow to rotate for slashing players in the weakside.

We do not know if Sims has improved his defense because that scouting report was done in January 2009.

For Smart Gilas, whether its gonna be Sims or not is not the concern but rather we need to find the right naturalised player now!

Time is not really running out but we all agree that the longer the reinforcement has been able to play with Gilas the better we have greater chances in performing creditably in future international competitions.

A blessing in disguise? That's an interesting spin to a disappointing turn of events.

The aim of almost every D-League player worth his salt (not just Jones) is to get the call-up to the NBA. That is patently obvious...it's a no-brainer, actually.

So when one hopes to snag a top-calibre American player in the D-League, it's an inherently risky proposition. It's classic caveat emptor.... or in this case, let the SBP-buyer beware.

I've highlighted a part of your statement above which pretty much sums up the ordeal of fishing for talent in the D-League. While you may have intended it for Jones' case, again it's more the rule rather than the exception.

Yes, no doubt Frankie Lim is feeling the pressure as you opined. Some of it was brought about by himself.

Perhaps issuing media statements only after a contract is actually signed would help? :)

Earl Baron former PBA import played for Redbull a 7footer.. was also Dwayne Wade's Teammate at Miami Heat in the NBA,,.

Agree 100% and it is really a no brainer that all D-League prospects are aspiring to get a call from the NBA hoping to eventually stay in the league for a good number of years. As we always said, why is there an NBA farm league after all?

However my predicament is driven with an in-depth assumption brought by the fact that Jones is at the top of his game and he is one of the most marketable center right now in the D-League.

This is the reason that he is tagged somehow of not giving his all in the game that I think he preserves his health in preparation of landing another NBA job someday.

Fact is Jones was forced to release by Red Star Belgrade in Europe 5 days after he was signed up, reports said that Jones had personal problems but to everyones surprise he returned briefly in the D-League creating speculation that Jones really want to stay in the NBA's farm league to get closer for an NBA stint.

Another fact is that Sims is more of a real 10-day contract NBA bench campaigner than Jones, comparing Sims to Jones' NBA exposure, the standout from Univ of Michigan has been in three NBA seasons but could only play a total of 5 games. On one hand Jones played four seasons in the NBA registering 80 games to his credit. Jones even played 56 NBA games in the 2007-08 season.

Dwayne Jones based on scouting report is fitted as a banger-type of a center, aggressive yet can score because of his agility. His presence is really fitted for an NBA-calibre slotman

Courtney Sims is regarded as athletic but scouts is not too keen on him due to his finesse way of play and lack of defensive toughness inside the paint.

All D-League prospects are really hoping to make it in the NBA, but the question is how big are their chances. As of April 2010 there are only 32% of the total D-League players that were called to play in the NBA but only 18% has been able to stay in the American elite league as of this time.

All players in the D-League are hoping to get in the NBA and you are right with it, but with the bumper crop of talents around, I believe some are already thinking of their plan B in their careers and so looking at his career journey, Courtney Sims could be one of them...A stint with Gilas for a year or two could be worth a wait until scouts starts believing in his ability.

to Gilas

save the money and get a naturalized player that is usable defensively and offensively, someone better than Rabeh or Slaughter, but not good enough to make it to the NBA. Otherwise, when you go for the best player out there, the best will choose the best team offer.

when you strive too much for the best out there, you may end up with nothing.
Better to have something than nothing as long as its useful or usable

Let me add something..and SBP must choose younger candidate preferably not more than 25 yrs. old for longer services. That is vision...

if he can get the rebounds and defense that gilas needs, i don't mind sacrificing a couple of inches...

if he can get those numbers against euroleague teams, he can most probably double/triple those against asian teams...

my two cents... ;)
