MANILA, Philippines – At this point, anybody making a pact with the Basketball Association of the Philippines could get the ire of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Powerade-Team Pilipinas team manager JB Baylon threw the SBP and his colleagues in the Philippine Basketball Association in a fit of rage after allegedly striking a deal with BAP secretary-general Graham Lim the other night.
PBA chairman Joaqui Trillo immediately branded Baylon’s move as inappropriate and done in bad taste a day after Trillo and SBP officials, led by president Manny Pangilinan, assailed the BAP for its actions.
The PBA, which formed the Powerade-Team Pilipinas, has joined hands with the SBP on declaring war against the BAP for bringing the federation in another controversial dispute before the International Basketball Federation or Fiba that could lead to another suspension.
“I don’t think it was right for him (Baylon) to meet with someone who has nothing to do with Philippine basketball,’’ said Trillo.
”Let’s do away with the pretenders. The SBP is the governing body in amateur basketball and only the SBP should be followed,’’ he added.
SBP executive director Noli Eala said Baylon, team governor of the Coca-Cola Tigers, was seen talking with Lim and another Chinese-looking individual in Café Adriatico Wednesday night.
“According to our sources, Graham assured Baylon that they will play in Tianjin. So is Graham the Fiba now?’’ said Eala.
”This meeting had no blessings from the SBP, the official NSA (national sport association) which is sanctioning the Powerade RP Team’s participation in Tianjin,’’ added Eala.
Coached by Joseller “Yeng’’ Guiao, the Powerade-Team Pilipinas is made up of PBA standouts, whose aim is to secure one of the three slots in the Fiba-Asia Championship on Aug.6-16 in Tianjin, China for the 2010 Fiba-World Championship in Turkey.
Another Fiba suspension could send the efforts of the Powerade-Team Pilipinas to naught similar to the 2005 PBA-backed RP Team of coach Chot Reyes, which was prohibited to play in the 2005 Fiba-Asia Championship, the qualifier for the 2006 Fiba-World Championship held in Japan.
For his part, Baylon said he wanted to make sure that Coca-Cola’s investment in the RP team would not go down the drain.
”I wanted to find out what the BAP was up to because Coca-Cola has an investment in the national team and it could now be at risk,’’ said Baylon.
”I need to be prepared to explain to my bosses what would happen to our sponsorship if things get serious. I don’t know what’s ugly about that,’’ he added.
SBP officials are fuming after the Fiba heeded the complaints of the BAP, which grumbled on the alleged failure of the SBP to implement the “Bangkok Agreement,’’ a treaty enjoining all basketball stakeholders under one federation.
The BAP’s move has prompted the Fiba, the world governing body for the sport, to set up a meeting in Geneva on July 20 and settle the dispute.

Let's give this Baylon guy the benefit of the doubt. After all, he just wanted to make sure that his team gets a go for FIBA Asia. Was it done it bad taste? Most probably, but i think he meant well.

MANILA, Philippines--IT'S FINAL and irreversible: controversial Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) secretary general Graham Lim is not a Filipino citizen.
The Supreme Court's Third Division has denied with finality Lim's effort to establish Filipino citizenship, thus quashing a motion for reconsideration he filed in November last year.
The decision was certified by Wilfredo Lapitan, assistant clerk of court, in behalf of Lucita Abjelina-Soriano, clerk of court.
Lim could not be reached for comment as of this writing.
His citizenship bid was both circuitous and controversial. He had sought to overturn a lower court ruling that had found his claim to Filipino citizenship baseless.
Lim, however, encountered bigger problems when former officemates at the BAP alleged he had submitted fake documents to substantiate his claim to Filipino citizenship.
His former deputy in the BAP, Emmanuel Perez de Tagle and international referee Liberato Valenzuela, produced papers substantiating their allegations that Lim was a fake Filipino.
As a result, charges were subsequently filed in court, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The DFA ruled Lim an illegal alien and eventually withdrew his Philippine passport.
The BI, under former commissioner Alipio Fernandez, likewise officially declared Lim as a Taiwanese citizen. Immigration agents arrested and detained him on March 24, 2006.
Despite the rulings, Lim went on to travel in and out of the country as deportation proceedings were never carried out.

Fiba leaders claim SBP-BAP Bangkok unity pact unmet

The raging dispute in basketball seems far from over, and disgraced Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) secretary general Graham Lim is again in the middle of it.
The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) yesterday created a special commission that would “seek solution to the ongoing conflict” between Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Lim’s BAP.
In a letter from Fiba secretary-general Patrick Baumann, the SBP central board stressed that upon its meeting last May 22 in Geneva, Switzerland, it said it found the terms and conditions stipulated in the Bangkok Agreement in 2006 were not met, creating a situation of uncertainty that prevented basketball stakeholders from achieving a lasting unity in the country.
The special commission would be headed by Fiba secretary-general emeritus Dr. Borislav Stankovic with Fiba honorary president Carl Ching Menky and Fiba’s legal commission chief Dr. Ken Madsen as members.
Baumann said the three-man panel will mediate between the two warring groups and would recommend its findings to the Fiba central board headed by president Bob Elphinston, who will make the final verdict.
And surprisingly, the Fiba central board agreed to reinstate Lim as chief of the Fiba youth commission, prompting SBP executives from speculating that the Chinese citizen Lim, who has a standing deportation order from the Department of Justice, has a hand in painting a grim picture of local basketball in the international community.
“The (Fiba) central board has agreed to reinstate Mr. Lim as member of the youth commission immediately after the special commission successfully concludes its mandate,” Baumann said in a brief letter to SBP.
SBP executive director Noli Eala, however, said the disgraced former BAP secretary-general is the mastermind behind the shame campaign for maintaining his solid ties with some Fiba executives despite his ouster from local basketball in 2007.
Lim, in fact, was reportedly caught sending communique to Menky in behalf of SBP during the staging of the 20th Fiba-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia last month.
“For as long as Fiba continuous to cuddle Graham Lim and refuses to see what Graham has done to Philippine basketball, the process of unity will always be hampered,” Eala said in a press briefing. “We’ve all complied with what was written in the Bangkok Agreement, and we’re now working towards achieving unity. But the problem is that the BAP refuses to accept the result of the unity congress.”
Eala said the SBP would immediately seek clarification from the powerful committee why it has to assemble a “special commission” and how it concluded that the country’s basketball is in disarray. He said SBP has not received any correspondence and complaints from the 70-year old BAP, which is now being led by losing Senatorial bet Prospero Pichay.
