Biggest contract of A1 Ever

Panathinaikos, in the 90s, offered 6.300.000$ to Clyde Drexler but he refused. It would have been the highest salary ever in Europe.

How about the contract that Petrovic would possibly sign in 1993 if he played 4 PAO?

Amazing - can someone tell me where all these millions to sports in Greece come from? I am confused because Greece is one of the poorest old EU member states, but manages to get some very rich clubs. Very interesting.

Apparently, Greece has the biggest mogul/Common people ratio in the world.

I remember the press talking around the figure of $3.000.000 per annum for a 3 year contract.

i am not sure Greeks are so poor...i mean if you go to Bouzoukia almost every night are full while every person now has Mercedes,BMW,AUDI and so many Jeeps...Ok there are some poor guys but like every country.Just Greeks are exaggerated.I mean i went in Parga this summer.I went to a village nearby.Man you cant believe what cars the "poor" villagers driving.Evo 8 and Evo 9 Mikkanen.Mercy.While another one had Alfa Romeo GT with 600PS.:D.And ofcourse these cars are not their basics..And way every but every Greek has car?Just some of them working in 2 jobs (people that want some money like families) but the things is much better.Whoever has going to other europeans countries know that Greece is nice place to stay.Even in Germany where they are payed enough do you know how much is the renting a house?Or buying a house?Or paying the bills..

but agree on live basketball manager thing

Well the poorest one is probably Romania.

*cough* *cough*... Why is everyone trying to claim the top for themselves? There is only one No1 and we all know it :D

Back to topic. Wow, these numbers are crazy. I am not sure that Saras is worth these money, no matter how good he is (even if he is in as good a shape as he was 3-4 years ago). IMO these are money thrown away. I seriously doubt that PAO would claim much of them back through marketing Saras' presence in the squad. But they've done it before with Wilkins and I guess they don't care how much they loose every season.

You forget that money spent is not an issue for the Yannakopoulos brothers. They don't care about money, expediture and the balance sheet. It's always been in the red. Always will be.

Their hobby is trophy -collecting. What Obradovic asks for, he gets if the player is availbale and wants to come.

All these years I can only remember 3 players who rejected Panathinaikos for another team. Fucka, Papaloukas and Vujicic.

Fucka because he thought he could win everything with Filodoro Bologna since they were big spenders too, Papaloukas because he prefered Oly since he's an Oly fan although PAO offered him more money and Vujicic since his wife wanted to stay in Tel Aviv.

Talking about big contracts in basketball Europewise.

I think Kukoc's contract with Benneton Treviso was something like $4,5 million per year and Dino Radja's with Messangero Roma something like $3,5 mil.

Can you confirm this Big Lebowski?

I believe I have read that Dimitris Diamantidis also has a 3 year €5,400,000 contract so €1,700,000 per year for him too from Panathinaikos.

Also I think that I read before that Theodoros Papaloukas has a €9,000,000 contract for 3 years with CSKA Moscow, so he makes €3,000,000 per year. So Saras even has a huge contract compared to them!

Panathinaikos paid I read €5,400,000 over 3 years for Vasileios Spanoulis so €1,700,000 per year for him.

But also Spanoulis gets paid €1,380,000 by Panathinaikos for contract buyout this year. San Antonio Spurs have to pay Spanoulis €1,380,000 to buy him out and then Panathinaikos have to pay San Antonio Spurs back for it!

So this year Spanoulis makes total of €3,180,000 all Panathinaikos have to cover.

Then €4,200,000 for Saras' salary plus €1,420,000 buyout to pay him for his buyout from the Golden State Warriors.

So think THIS off season Panathinaikos spent for JUST THIS YEAR €3,180,000 on Spanoulis and €5,620,000 on Saras.

That's €8,800,000 spent on signing Spanoulis and Saras JUST FOR THIS YEAR!

How can Olympiacos possibly compete with this kind of spending? LOL sorry Olympiacos fans.

only with this way you can competing NBA teams at least a bit.with enormous money which of course noone deserves.but its about time someone puts salary cap at least in euroleague and not only on top but also in bottom.
same thing must be consider the "brains" !!!! of A1

You said it correctly. Greece is at the bottom end of the "old" EU countries which are 12 that have euro currency plus 2-3 more.
However Europe is the continent with the most countries with the highest PPP in the world.
There are not huge differences in GDP between the old countries.

I will give you an example. You would expect rich basketball clubs coming from Italy, Spain, France, Germany right?. Ok lets compare their GDP

Germany $34,400
France $33,800
Spain $33,700
Italy $31,000
Greece $30,500

As you can see there is a misconception on what poor means in the "old" EU countries.

Lets compare those 5 with the rest of the basketball countries in Europe

Lithuania $16,700
Portugal $21,800
Slovenia $27,300
Russia $14,600
Poland $16,200
Turkey $9,400
Slovakia $19,800
Serbia $7,700
Romania $11,100

In the second group you will see "poor" countries with high budgets on basketball clubs (Russia, Turkey). Also rich countries according to their GDP (slovenia) with small club budgets.
It all has to do with the size of their markets and the high numbers of moguls in those countries (especially in Russia).

I left out countries like Luxemborg etc that are small markets and not significant impact on basketball (or any other sport for that matter).

You can check out a full list of GDP per country for 2008 (2009 is not over yet) here:

It's GDP per capita, just to avoid confusions...

What do you make of the proposals OLY made to LBJ and KB24?

50 000 000 for the King and 36 000 000 for Kobe per season.

These are just rumors guys. Oly never offered this amount of money...
