LLAMADOS, E-PAINTERS DISPUTE FIRST FINALS BERTH
Published on July 17, 2012

DESPITE his Rain or Shine team's recent downward spiral in the PBA Governors Cup semifinals coach
Yeng Guiao is not about to push the panic button just yet and he maintains a first-ever finals stint
is in the offing for his charges.

The main reason, he explained, is the team chemistry that was lacking in the Elasto Painters' loss
to Powerade in the seventh and deciding game of their Philippine Cup semifinal duel.

"The chances for us to make it this time are bigger or greater since we are more experienced this
time than in the Philippine Cup," said Guiao. "We've been together longer and our import is the
right fit for us."

The odds, however, seemingly do not favor Rain or Shine when it tackles B-Meg in the first of two
all-important matches Wednesday closing out the season-ending tourney's semis at the Smart Araneta
Coliseum.

B-Meg, which is coming off an 82-70 drubbing of Barangay Ginebra last Sunday, is favored and not
just because of its recent exploits that saw it winning three of four games.

After emerging as the eliminations topnotcher for the first time in franchise history Rain or Shine
has floundered in the semis by losing three of its last four games, including a 90-98 defeat to
Talk 'N Text Monday night.

The defeat came on the heels of a similar 86-95 loss to Ginebra, prompting Guiao to admit his team
has really struggled.

"We cannot nail that last win. It's been so elusive for us," he stated.

In the course of that game against the Tropang Texters, Jeff Chan sprained his right foot and Paul
Lee re-injured his left shoulder, forcing them to skip Tuesday's practice.

Guiao said the two's status remains a game-time decision, but that could be used as a motivational
tool for the rest of the E-Painters.

"We consider it as a challenge and if our top scorers cannot play then the rest need to step up. I
know they will try their best and be ready to take on B-Meg," said Guiao, adding: "B-Meg has been
playing its best basketball so far, so we have to be at our best."

Rain or Shine won over B-Meg 100-94 in overtime the first time they met May 25. But that was when
the Llamados were opening their campaign still hung over from their Commissioner's Cup championship
and far from the fiery form they have recently displayed.

B-Meg coach Tim Cone said that doesn't offer no guarantee.

"Yeng Guiao teams are always tough with their backs against the wall so we're really expecting a
tough fight," he said.

Considering what's at stake, Cone also knows what to expect. "It should be a bruising, physical
encounter, but I think our guys are ready for it," he said.

The loser faces the winner of the TNT-Ginebra tiff, set later Wednesday, in a knockout game on
Friday for the second finals berth. (NC)

TEXTERS, KINGS ENGAGE IN KO SETTO

Published on July 17, 2012
It’s a question of desire and determination as Talk n Text and Barangay Ginebra engage in a
knockout duel to close the PBA Governors Cup semifinal round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday
night.

The Kings have always been known for their never-say-die attitude.

That’s the same posture embraced by the Tropang Texters as they have achieved an improbable feat
of surviving no less than nine do-or-die games in the season.

So the question really is who’s got the bigger heart as the Kings and the Texters clash in a KO
match at 7:30 p.m.

The winner plays the loser in the match between Rain or Shine and B-Meg in another do-or-die setto
Friday.

The Texters have survived three KO games in the season-ending tourney. They try to make it four in a
row to stay in the hunt for a sixth straight finals appearance.

As in their recent games, the Texters are playing with a lot of caution.

“Our situation hasn’t changed. We need to come out tougher (today) as we play a team that is
also fighting for their lives,” said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.

Talk n Text import Paul Harris, in his second year in the local pro league, is aware Ginebra is very
dangerous in this kind of game.

“Ginebra is the most dangerous of them all. It’s going to be tough,” said Harris.

Ginebra could really be tough especially coming from a loss the last time out.

The Kings came out flat versus the B-Meg Llamados Sunday, suffering a crucial 70-82 defeat and thus
playing a KO match against the Texters.

The Kings struggled with a mere 32.9 percent shooting. And Mark Caguioa was no exception.

Averaging 21.3 points before that game, Caguioa scored only three points on 0-of-12 field shooting
and 3-of-4 charities.

“Ang consolation namin nangyari na agad ito, at hindi sa knockout game,” sighed Ginebra
assistant coach Allan Caidic.

“Simply put, win to stay alive,” said Ginebra head coach Siot Tanquingcen. (SB)

Though i like ROS to get to the finals i just don't see them doing it this conference. In my observation their import Jamelle Cornley can be guarded.
Paul Lee isn't 100% and Yeng Guiao is bald.

I like the chances of B-MEG, TNT and BGK

B-MEG- Their import Blakely is doing it all ala- Denzel Bowles. Tim Cone knows how to super maximize the talent of his import and knows how to use these strengths to blend well with his local crew.

Local support- Yancy De Ocampo and Rafi Reavis. These players know their roles and they don't deviate with it.

I haven't included yet their starters James Yap, PJ Simon, Pingris etc.

TNT- I say that TNT is still the team to beat this conference. Beat this team in a do or die game ( calling out BGK ) and you will gain my respect.

Tim Cone has been able to recruit some good imports for his teams. From Chambers to Rosell Ellis to Diamon Simpson, and now Bowles and Blakely. Maybe he can help SBP get a stand-in in case McGee does not play out hehehe.

LOL "Yeng Guiao is bald". BMEG might prove to be too good for ROS.
ROS' success wil hinge on their bench. HAHAHA last year it was Petron who beat TNT. Last conference it was B-MEG. Is it Ginebra's turn to beat Talk n'Text????

RoSE was quite a ''kontrapelo" to Bmeg for the past two seasons now...From Gallent and now coach Tim!
I'm hoping Bmeg win this one on a big note.

I am a self confess fanboy of Ginebra since the 80's but I don't think they can beat TnT.

Mga pre, this is it. Games later and expect the unexpected. Like I said the odds favor's TnT and BMEG, i just don't see ROS and BGK doing it this conference.

but before that, they owned the painters in a series.
yeah, a series can be different from one-game affairs.

Books agree as well. Both are pegged at +5 underdogs. i believe they'll be in for a surprise: ROS and GIN can pull off the upsets.

On my POV, Coach Yeng as a coach (in PBA) is better playing as the underdog (or in recent history in Red Bull undermanned) due to his tendency to use "risky strategies" which normally changes the dynamics of the game against a very systematic team i.e. B-Meg Llamados thus making them a "Kontrapelo" to stronger teams.

^^ BMEG/Alaska excels in detailed scouting pf their opponents.. they really watch the tendencies of their opponents evident on how they stop Mac Cardona last conference and MArk Caguioa last Sunday.. But yeah ROS play loose and add the fact its always hard facing teams you knew in almost all aspects you have the advantage

Things that I noticed (and remembered) with YG's "risky strategies":

1. Big immobile men taking 3 point shots (take: note, this is on a regular basis whenever they are open). The 3 point shots of Mick Pennisi during his Red Bull days as well as today’s ROS’ Beau Belga and Baby Shaq Quinahan.
(I wonder if YG is interested in getting Ken Bono to create an extra rice troika)
2. The direct switching of man defense whenever there is a pick and roll (I noticed during their previous game against Talk N’ Text e laging naiiwan si Paul Lee sa mga picks, he might be a step slower on defense, I don’t know).
3. Putting Gabe Norwood on “Point Guard” to contribute in rebounds and as a safety for transition defense.
4. During the undermanned days of Cyrus Baguio and Red Bull, they were using full court traps on occasions during playoffs.
and the list goes on...(pardon my poor memory I can't remember it all)

I believe that YG's risky strategies are "key" to winning tonight's game vs. Tim Cone's modified triangle offense for the B-Meg. Somehow it's kinda predictable on YG's part that whenever they are in need of insurance points, they always go to their import Cornley and their star rookie Paul Lee, which in their previous games in the semis were very predictable and it didn't paid off. May I suggest (my unsolicited advice) that let Gabe Norwood take over during the crucial stages of the ball game, this a risky strategy that might pay off.

Norwood will be a great mismatch but his lack of aggressiveness and not willing to be the franchise player is really evident for him!
I believe, RoSE is more a complete team compared to Bmeg, having injuries to JDV and Intal might be the deciding factor if they'll not be in the finals for this conference. But one thing for sure, Bmeg is playing just "All HEART" especially in this semis...
Hope to see a nice game for both teams!

that's why entrusting the ball to Gabe Norwood during crucial moments is a "risky strategy"...and it should materialize, for crying out loud he should take charge and make himself worthy of his maximum salary.

It's ironic to see limited efforts from players with maximum salary.
I wish they would apply "sabermetrics" in those financially challenged PBA teams to acquire players who are value for their money.

:D

SMC boys? hohohohoho

8 mins. remaining no Blakely, no Senorito James Yap, no Pingris on the floor, but wait there was Jerwin Gaco. then suddenly Jerwin Gaco collided with Jervy Cruz, B-Meg got the better end of the rumble, split charities and ball possession. Jerwin Gaco's purpose was already served. :)

RoS' defense and BMeg's terrible shooting did it for RoS today. Their decision making on offense is still suspect but if they were capable of beating Bmeg in their own game. Then I'll say that RoS is certainly no pushover in the finals.... as long as their shooters remain deadly that is.
