A break for Cebu

Sunday, August 1, 2010

By Marian C. Baring

THE Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Championship Games promised to give the provincial teams better chances to pull off better finishes in the national games and changed its format.

Before, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion was the only team that gets a slot in the Sweet 16. This time, the runner-up will also be given an automatic entry.

“Before, first and second rounds pa lang, talo na ang Cebu, so we thought, why not give Cebu two slots,” said chairman Rey Gamboa.

The third and fourth placers also get a chance to strut their stuff in the national level but they need to go through the zonals.

The top teams from the other leagues in the Visayas will play in their zonals, while another one will be held for the Mindanao teams. The winners from the two zonals, along with the third and fourth placers from Cesafi, will battle it out in the Southern Island Collegiate Championship on Nov. 12 at the Cebu Coliseum. The top two will advance to the Sweet 16 finals.

Official Joe Lipa said while the eight-year-old league has always been dominated by Manila teams, UV has had the most number of appearances in the tournament with seven.

The games will be televised over ABS-CBN and Gamboa said it is a good way to give the schools national exposure. Aside from this, he added they want the provincial teams to get a chance to compete outside their area.

Prizes

“We want them to have something to look forward to after their mother leagues are through. Before, after their leagues are done, their collegiate season is also over.

This time, they have the PCCL to look forward to. And since this is not an invitational event, they really have to work hard to get into the top 16,” he said.

Aside from the bragging rights, the winning school in the national finals will get P500,000 worth of athletic items or scholarship grants. The next three placers will get P200,000, P100,000 and P50,000, respectively.

The members of the winning team will also get athletic items, gift certificates or cash worth P400,000, P200,000, P100,000 and P50,000.

There will also be special awards like the MVP, mythical five, best coach and best performing referee.

(The Philippine Star) Updated September 23, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

how about make it 64 teams just like the NCAA in US..

actually it is difficult to have such a format here in the Philippines as we do not have that objective people to rank the teams appropriately.

the format looks unfair to the Luzon teams... the zonals include NU, UE, Letran, Arellano, and the champs of the other Metro Manila leagues. regardless of how they play out the zonals, i don't see a regional Luzon team making the Sweet 16.

luckily for CESAFI, looks like we'll see their top 4 teams on TV (unless the regional champs pull off an upset)... but they'll definitely be crushed in their first game.

to make the tournament more interesting, i'd like to inter-league play in the Sweet 16. the UAAP/NCAA finalists could take on the CESAFI/VisMin teams while the rest have to be paired up such that they won't face a team from their same league (like JRU-UE or DLSU-Letran).

browsing into the website of pccl and look into the format of this year tournament, looks like they changed the format & i really don't know why. wow ncaa champion, ncaa runner-up & ncaa 3rd placer while uaap runner-up, 3rd placer & 4th placer all in one bracket???

Wow! Two Wildcats (M.S.Enverga U Wildcats, Quezon champion; and Computer Communications Development Institute (CCDI) Wildcats, Sorsogon champion) team in one division?! lol

They should throw in Kentucky Wildcats, too! lol

What? No Calayan Foundation Cougars in the zonals? :D

a CESAFI team will make the Final 4 and probably lose to Ateneo (i don't see Mapua or whoever qualifies from the zonals beating the Eagles). as for the Luzon-MM zonals, they'll be coming from Metro Manila anyway. so it's Ateneo vs who ever comes out from that other bracket. probably San Beda, given their form in the NCAA.

I've always been a fan of the PCCL and hope it continues to improve and gain interest every year.

But I think it would be even better and more exciting/interesting if they could:

1) Limit it to champion teams only, thus ensuring a real "season champion".
2) Start earlier, i.e. immediately after the UAAP/NCAA finals end. So that you get the teams in their championship form and not fat & rusty. And better for student-athletes if the basketball season ends earlier.

My suggestions :)...

To achieve both 1 & 2, I would get rid of the zonals (no longer needed).

Instead of knockout games all the way, I would have 12 teams play a FIBA-style round-robin (3 per group). So we see all the lesser-known teams for at least 2 games plus consolation games.

TWELVE CHAMPIONS:
2 bigs: UAAP, NCAA
8 from Luzon/MM:
NCL, SLB (North/Central Luzon and South Luzon + Bicol regional champs)
NCAA-South, NAASCU, MMC, UCAA, UCLAAI, ISAA
2 from Vis/Min:
CESAFI + Vis & Min regional champs (play round robin, top 2 advance to Manila)

FIRST ROUND = 4 groups, 3 teams each e.g.
A: UAAP
B: Vis/Min
C: NCAA
D: CESAFI
And draw lots to place the 8 Luzon/MM teams.
Round-robin, use FIBA-style tiebreakers.
A3 B3 C3 D3 are eliminated, go to consolation round.

FINAL 8 ONWARDS = KNOCKOUT STAGE.
A1D2, B1C2, C1A2, D1B2 or variation thereof
Have consolation (placing) games for losers.

Advantages:
- More prestigious because the national champion is a league champion
- More fan interest due to momentum from UAAP/NCAA seasons
- Teams are in championship form
- Better for student-athletes
- More chances to see teams we don't normally see (instead of one-and-done), because they play 2 round-robin games plus consolation. Better money's worth for those who had to travel from Vis/Min.
- Although more games than the current format (due to round-robin first round), you have more interesting matchups rather than UAAP/NCAA rehashes. And less total games (costs) because no zonals.
- With consolation games, you'd have a complete ranking #1-12. So each school can have a goal to improve next time.

West Negros, Iloilo U keep clean slates in PCCL
Tuesday, October 12, 2010

UNIVERSITY of Iloilo and West Negros University continued their winning streaks in the regional games of the 8th Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) after downing opponents in Iloilo City over the weekend.

The Iloilo Wildcats dumped the AMA Titans, 103-82, in a big follow-up to their 103-85 drubbing of Bohol’s reigning champion, the Philippine Maritime Institute.

The WNU Mustangs, on the other hand, had an easy beating of Asian College of Science and Technology (ACSAT), 105-77 after hurdling their opening assignment against the PMI Navigators, 103-85.

The AMA Titans bounced back with a 111-89 victory over the Navigators to improve to a 2-1. They beat the ACSAT Lightings on opening day, 94-78.

The Visayas winner will join Cebu’s University of San Carlos Warriors, Southwestern University Cobras and the Mindanao regional champion in the VisMin zonal qualifying games where two seats to the “Sweet 16 Finals” are up for grabs.

Ten seats to the Sweet 16 Finals have been filled up by the top four teams of the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the finalists of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi).

The early birds include three-peat champion Ateneo de Manila, Far Eastern University (FEU), Adamson, La Salle, San Beda College, San Sebastian College, Jose Rizal University, Mapua, University of Cebu and University of Visayas.

Majority of the champs here are from UAAP, who says they don't take this seriously.
