MANILA. Kirk Long buried 23 points as defending champion Ateneo turned back Mapua, 65-56, in a rugged duel yesterday to reach the semifinals of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The American guard hit nine of 19 shots to keep the Eagles in the game as Mapua caught fire in the first half then joined hands with Emman Monfort and Nico Salva to finish off the Cardinals and arrange a last four clash with University of Cebu.

San Beda earlier booked its place in the Elite Eight by crushing University of the East, 86-64, behind another huge effort from Sudan Daniel.

The 6-foot-7 American, who bagged season and Finals MVP honors in the NCAA, had 20 points and pulled down 22 rebounds to go with three blocks in just 22 minutes for the Lions, who will face La Salle on Monday.

The Lions refused to pull their punches, zooming to a 20-5 lead in coasting to their 21st straight victory—a run that started in the NCAA.

“We have to continue our roll,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim. “We finished the NCAA without a loss and we also want to finish this tournament without a loss.”

The highly physical game nearly took an ugly turn late in the third period when Jonathan Banal and Eric Salamat were called for unsportsmanlike fouls because of an altercation after Banal fouled Long.

The scores:

First Game

SAN BEDA 86—Daniel 20, A. Semerad 15, Dela Rosa 13, Lanete 13, Caram 7, Marcelo 6, Pontejos 4, Villahermosa 4, D. Semerad 2, Lim 2, Solera 0, J. Pascual 0, K. Pascual 0.

UE 64—Martinez 14, Lee 11, Duran 8, Sumido 8, Santos 5, Acibar 4, Reyes 4, Zamar 4, Noble 3, Tagarda 3, Rosopa 0, Hernandez 0, Enguio 0, Casajeros 0.

Quarters: 20-5, 36-21, 63-42, 86-64

Second Game

ATENEO 65—Long 23, Salva 12, Monfort 11, Tiongson 7, Golla 6, Chua 2, Gonzaga 2, Salamat 2, Escueta 0, Erram 0, Austria 0, Dela Cruz 0.

MAPUA 56—Mangahas 11, Sarangay 9, Parala 8, Banal 7, Acosta 6, Ranises 5, Pascual 3, Cornejo 3, Ighalo 2, Guillermo 2.

Quarters: 10-18, 32-30, 42-46, 65-56

Is there a good reason why teams from the provinces who qualified to be in the final-8 cannot be in manila 3 days or more before their games start ?? This gives manila-based teams who already qualified, an undue advantage since they did not take a long trip and secondly, they are familiar already with the surroundings.

Manila-based teams are already strong to begin with, now, the PCCL has to add insult to injury with this non-sense rule about qualifying provincial teams not allowed to arrive early in manila. What advantage will it give provincial teams if they are in manila early when the manila-based teams are already in manila to begin with ? If ever, barring provincial teams from arriving early in manila gives manila-based teams an advantage since it gives the provincial teams little time to adjust to the new environment, unpack their belongings, rest after the trip, etc

Is this all about money aka gate receipts ? can anyone give a convincing good reason for this insanity?

or is this another one of those nonsense rules in the Philippine basketball world such as height handicapping in the PBA, foreigner limit in NCAA, etc LOL

Cebu vs. Manila

November 27, 2010

CEBU Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. champion University of Cebu will have to brace for UAAP powerhouse and top seed Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in the semifinal round of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) on Nov. 30 at the San Juan Gym.

Ateneo eliminated Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) Cardinals, 65-56, last Tuesday in its quarterfinal round assignment.

The Manny Pacquiao Blog. Stories and updates on the Filipino boxing champ.

The back-to-back UAAP champion showed its ability to climb back from a huge deficit behind the mammoth efforts of swingman Kirk Long, who scored 23 points on top of four rebounds and two steals.

Ateneo will be shooting for its third PCCL title, while UC is making its first trip to the semifinal round of the competition that gathers the different collegiate champions around the country.

“As we expected, Ateneo will be our opponent in the semifinal round,” said UC head coach Roehl Gomez, whose team will be leaving for Manila on Nov. 29.

Gomez, who wanted to be in Manila three days before their game, said Nov. 29 is good enough.

“At least we were given the chance to be in Manila a day before the game. I was looking to leave on Nov. 28 but we can’t always get what we want. So that date is good enough,” said Gomez, whose team played on the day it arrived in Manila last year.

Gomez noted that Ateneo put a premium on defense as shown in its previous two wins—76-66 over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates last Tuesday and 65-56 over the Cardinals.

The 70.5 points per game average of Ateneo pales in comparison to UC’s 89.5 points in its two previous wins.

However, Gomez admitted the teams the Blue Eagles faced were tougher. UC defeated the University of Iloilo and the University of San Carlos in the first two games.

Both games were played at the Cebu Coliseum, UC’s homecourt.

If ever UC advances to the later rounds, I would love to see Junmar Fajardo go up against Sudan Daniel of SBC..If he can put up monster numbers against Daniel then he certainly is for real...

Its good that Ateneo is being led now by non hyped palyers he is the best player on this team w/o a doubt

fajardo is better than slaughter....

Poor slaughter. Wrong coach for him....toroman is useless for him,

an hour long flight wont affect their play i guess. its only 60 minutes. lets say spend about 3 hours including the time going to the airport and waiting for boarding, etc.

it depends on the person. for some people, it affects their routine and focus. A big part of the game is getting into that mental groove to focus on the game ahead with no distractions and stress unrelated to the game.

Anyway, no one has given a good reason why provincial teams cannot be in manila even 3 days before their game when the manila-based team is obviously already in manila waiting to play the provincial-based team.

Between Ateneo and UC, whoever executes better will win the game. UC can dump the ball to Junmar all they want, but when the Blue Eagles start double-teaming him, will Junmar be mature enough to look for the open man? Ateneo is getting back into the disciplined form that won them the UAAP title this year. Lots of passing, team defense, set plays.

UC should not let itself be drawn into a shootout. Ateneo should clamp down and force UC's guards into committing turnovers. Thankfully, Salamat, Monfort, and Long are three of the best backcourt defenders in local collegiate basketball today. I don't know much about UC's players, but I really think Ateneo's bench is deeper and there should be little drop-off in production especially when guys like Salva, Golla, Tiongson, Escueta, and Erram come in. Will Fajardo be ready to play with little relief against the inside defense of Escueta, Golla, Chua, and Erram? How will he handle double teams performed by Salva and Buenafe? We haven't see Buenafe play much in the PCCL. Will UC's guards find their stroke from outside, extending the defense? That we will have to see.

However, I predict at least a ten-point win for Ateneo.

wow good game between san beda and dlsu so far...:D
ohh wait now its with action!!muntik na mag basag ulo!:D:D:D

dlsu is really well-trained team...very tactical and they know what to do.
it keeps them in the game even if they are clearly the lesser team..
gilas was like this before..

its the same just add the pressure:eek:

San Beda is using Toroman system euro style basketball in its some crucial plays but if its not properly used it becomes a disaster:eek:

it is not just continuos passing it requires commitment to team bball it is not learned by months or few years, it should be teached once a player holds a basketball for the first time

undefeated NCAA champion lost to undermanned UAAP lightweight La Salle & is eliminated from the competition. bwa-ha-ha.

possible explanations, besides the obvious? OVERHYPE. like the posts above

don't get me wrong, I'm a card-carrying DLSU hater, from Limpot, Cortez, Allado, Cardona, Webb, what's there to like  but "clearly the lesser team" ... spoken like a true-blue (excuse me, red) propagandist.

plain and simple, they caught beda on a bad night, anyone here who knows their basketball will agree to the above post that beda is indeed deep and strong. though i can't say the same about their coach :D

deep at the guard line-up? NCAA deep maybe. you can have your survey results. but it still feels good to gloat. oft-used cliche: basketball is not played on paper. they looked like a lost team in the 4th, not a team that lost. and so the F. Lim magic continues...

natural human, esp. Pinoy tendency? we love to watch our heroes rise. even better when they fall.
