2008-2009 In-Between Season College Tournaments

All of the major local collegiate tournaments (i.e., UAAP, NCAA, CESAFI) are over, and it is time for the tournaments in between. First up, ahead of the PCCL, is the 2008 University Games. A not-so-popular, relatively new tournament, I think the University Games is a good way for provincial teams to get a chance to play against UAAP / NCAA teams, giving them valuable exposure and experience.

It is also a venue to "discover" prospective talents from the provinces. I think Pong Escobal and Nonoy Baclao got noticed by UAAP / NCAA teams when they first played, and played well, against those teams.

Unlike the PCCL, I think the University Games allow additions to the team from their training pool, giving bench players valuable playing time during these games.

DUMAGUETE CITY--A total of 20 schools have confirmed their participation in the 13th University Games to be held in Negros Oriental on Oct. 24-30.

The schools are Ateneo de Manila University, Dela Salle University, DLSU St. Benilde, Holy Angels University, Jose Maria College, Mindanao State University-Marawi, Far Eastern University, University of Mindanao, University of Iloilo, University of St. La Salle, West Negros College, Xavier University, University of Perpetual Help, San Beda University, Silliman University, Negros Oriental State University, Asian College of Science and Technology, the Colegio de Sta. Catalina de Alejandria and lead host Foundation University.

Dr. Aparicio Mequi, former Philippine Sports Commission chairman and now the chair of Foundation’s Institute of Youth Sports for Peace (IYS Peace) program, said the presence of the top University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) rivals Ateneo de Manila University and Dela Salle University is expected to bring in more teams from other schools.

“Basketball teams will come to test the mettle of Ateneo and La Salle,” Mequi predicted.

Preparations are continuing for the Unigames, especially at Foundation University, which is the nerve-center of the six-day event.

While most of the games will be held in several staging venues in Dumaguete City, the City of Tanjay is hosting basketball games for men and women at their covered basketball court by the city park, while the Municipality of Valencia is also rushing the completion of its gymnasium to host the volleyball games.

The Unigames is the only national collegiate sports competition which started 1996 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, gathering together the finest varsity athletes from private and government universities from all over the country in the spirit of fair play, friendship and top-caliber competition.

Through the years, the Unigames has served as feeder for our different national teams representing the Philippines in the Olympics, the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and other international sports competitions.

The 12 sports disciplines to be competed in the said event are Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Football, Lawn Tennis, Sepak Takraw, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, and Beach Volleyball.

Chiefs repulse Tams for Martin Cup title
Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Arellano University showed its more illustrious counterparts in the UAAP and the NCAA that it can mix it up with the best of them after recently topping the sixth Fr. Martin Division II Cup at the Technological Institute of the Philippines-Casal Gym.

The Leo Isaac-mentored Chiefs smashed Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 64-56, to crown themselves champions of the seniors’ division of this event organized by Ato Badolato and Joey Lim with Aric del Rosario as commissioner.

It was Arellano’s third title in this tournament after emerging back-to-back titlists of the Summer Cup edition of the event.

“We’re proud of our accomplishments,” said Arellano coach Isaac.

In juniors’ action, Letran likewise made it a golden double of sorts after it trampled a tough San Beda side, 73-63, for the crown.

It was the second title conquest for the Squires, who also reigned supreme in the Summer Cup of this same section.

First big news in the Unigames: West Negros University (WNU, old alma mater of Nonoy Baclao, before he was "discovered" by ADMU) beats Cebu's University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR):

WNU Cagers, Booters Sweep Unigames Foes

West Negros University sent its teams to the quarterfinals of men's basketball and men's football yesterday, while University of St. La Salle also made the last eight in volleyball and football in the 13th Philippine University Games in Dumaguete City.

Playing their second game in five hours, the Mustangs banked on the backcourt tandem of Alfie Villariza and Jeff Jacinto to stun Cebu powerhouse University of San Jose-Recoletos, 75-68, yesterday and complete a sweep of group C in men's basketball at the Lamberto Macias Cultural and Sports Center.

The Mustangs defeated Holy Cross of Davao College, 72-61, yesterday morning to clinch a quarterfinals spot. But while the win boosted the morale of the reigning NOPSSCEA men basketball titlist, it cost them the services of Ryan Flores who dislocated his elbow while defending a layup in the first half.

Sidelined by his injury, Flores did not suit up for WNU in their game against USJ-R in the afternoon.

The 5-foot-7 Villariza led the Mustangs' big start by scoring 10 points in the first period, before Jacinto sparked a burst that saw the Mustangs stretch their lead, 29-15, midway in the second period.

A Villariza runner, his 20th point of the game, with 1:40 left virtually sealed the win, 73-63, sending the Mustangs to a knockout match with the loser of the Angeles University Foundation-Rizal Technological University match, which was being played as of press deadline.

Also registering impressive performance in the game against USJ-R were Briton Javelona and Winrich Posoc who scored 10 points each. Posoc also made five blocks in the game, a feat that made observers mark him in the defense department after registering six blocks in the match earlier against HCDC.

The Mustangs will face Xavier University in the quarterfinals.

USJ-R then lost to Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC, a possible team to join the NCAA next season or so):

Cebu Teams Peeling Off The Title Race

THE Cebuano teams slowly fall out of the title hunt in the University Games in Dumaguete City and hopes for a title now hinge on the volleyball teams of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) as they are the only ones left to carry Cebu’s banner in the week-long sporting meet.

As of press time, the men’s and women’s team are still fighting to keep the Cebuanos’ bid in basketball alive as they were playing in their respective quarterfinals matches.

Eight may be a lucky number for some, but it totally went against all superstition when the USJ-R basketball squad of Edito Salacot lost their last two games by eight points.

Late Monday afternoon, USJ-R lost to West Negros College by eight points, 66-74. Banking on on a strong performance in the competition and with three wins on its belt, USJ-R still managed to advance to the quarterfinal round yesterday morning.

Contention

However, things did not change for the better as they still floundered over little known Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) of Luzon also by eight points, 73-81 to formally drop out of contention.

“We were leading by eight points early in the game. But we are not in our best condition just like our game against UV (University of the Visayas) and they caught up and turned the game around as they were able to build up an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter,” said guard Jabe Delfino.

Delfino added that just like their game against UV in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball finals, they struck first but their energy dissipated going to the end of the match, allowing EAC to wrest the lead only the fourth quarter and went on to remove USJ-R from the title hunt.

USJ-R is gunning for an evasive slot to the Champions League. It will compete in the zonals qualifying next week in Ormoc City.

The latest news now, is how WNU scared the 2008 UAAP Champion Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), before losing by 11 points, 72-61:

Ateneo Scrambles To Cage Finals vs EAC

DUMAGUETE CITY—Ateneo de Manila University passed its toughest test so far in the 13th Philippine National University Games as the Blue Eagles turned back the West Negros University Mustangs, 72-61, Wednesday night to reach the basketball finals at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center.

The Eagles needed a brilliant fourth quarter to forge a title duel with Emilio Aguinaldo College, which hammered out a 94-92 overtime victory over Angeles University Foundation behind Argel Mendoza’s 24 points.

Eric Salamat had 18 points and Rabeh Al-Hussaini added 14 for the Eagles, who survived stellar performances from the Mustangs’ 5-foot-6 playmaker Alfie Villariza and 6-foot-2 center Winrich Posoc.

The fleet-footed Villariza matched his output against Far Eastern University in the semis last year by pouring 30 points, including 21 in the second half to help the Mustangs cut a 17-point deficit to 45-47 heading into the fourth period.

But Eman Monfort and Kirk Long opened the final quarter with back-to-back triples, before Al-Hussaini and Oping Sumalinog combined for 14 of Ateneo’s next 17 points to finish off the former squad of Eagle Nonoy Baclao, who did not play because of tendonitis.

Posoc had seven blocks, two each on Al-Hussaini and Salamat, before fouling out early in the final quarter.

* USJ-R is not just a CESAFI Final Four team. They were the runner up in this year's CESAFI tournament. And yet they lost to EAC, a team that isn't even in the NCAA (yet)? But, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt: Maybe they weren't taking these University Games seriously, or that maybe they were thinking too far ahead for the PCCL. At any rate, it is still kinda embarassing, to say the least.

* Alfie Villariza was consistent in WNU's defeat of USJ-R, and WNU's good fight with AdMU. Kinda small, though, at only 5'6". But teams like AdMU could need a Guard in their lineup. If he's young enough, he could be a prospect. Another "import" from WNU. :D

* Winrich Posoc also is an interesting player. Kinda short at 6'2", but just like his former alumni Nonoy Baclao, a defensive shotblocking specialist.

* All eyes will be on those two in the coming PCCL wars.

ADMU stamped their class in the University Games mens basketball championship by totally outclassing Emilio Aguinaldo College in the finals. Winning margin for the Blue eagles was 32 points. Not bad for a team missing Chris Tiu, Jai Reyes, Jobe, Mike Baldos and Nonoy Baclao but getting ample support from team B call-ups. Eric Salamat was chosen finals MVP.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines—In a year replete with achievements, chalk one more up for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

The reigning UAAP champions scored a comprehensive 99-67 triumph over Emilio Aguinaldo College Thursday night to claim their first Philippine National University Games men’s basketball title at the jampacked Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center.

Eric Salamat finished with 15 points and had four steals to fuel a big run bridging the second and third periods that turned an early 21-24 deficit to a commanding 75-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The win gave the Eagles their fourth title in the past 11 months, counting the Philippine Collegiate Champions League in December last year and the Nike Summer League last May.

“It’s a great experience for our players as we build up for next season,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga, who was given a free hand by head coach Norman Black in calling the shots for the Eagles in this tournament backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

“They got to play everyday for a week and were exposed to different styles of play that will come in handy in the UAAP.”

The Eagles actually completed a seven-game sweep of the tournament with Salamat named Most Valuable Player.

Five other players scored in double figures for Ateneo with diminutive guard Eman Monfort posting 12 points on top of five steals, Chris Sumalinog contributing 11 markers and rookies Ryan Buenafe, Justin Chua and Nico Salva adding 10 apiece.

Chiefs, Generals picked as top bets in NCRAA
http://www.malaya.com.ph/nov19/spor5.htm

TWO teams, one of them three-peat seeking Arellano University, loom as the top picks for the title when the 16th edition of the National Capital Region Athletic Association comes off the wraps this Friday, with four games in basketball ushering in hostilities at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Sports Complex.

Majority of the coaches of the 10 competing squads pointed to the Chiefs and former champion EAC Generals as the teams this time.

Experience and bench depth separate the two from the rest of the field, according to some team officials who graced the weekly PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Ave. branch yesterday.

"Definitely, ‘yung defending champion," basketball legend and PSBA-QC mentor Philip Cesar replied when asked which team is favored to win the championship.

"Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College," Rizal Technological University’s Arlene Rodriguez said.

Leo Isaac, architect of Arellano’s two straight title wins, admitted the school’s serious bid to make it three in a row, but downplayed what the rest of the coaches said about the strength of the Chiefs.

"Huwag kayong basta-basta magpapa-niwala sa mga ‘yan, nagpapadehado lang sila. Nililigaw lang kayo ng mga ‘yan," Isaac said, smiling, in the session sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

"But definitely, we will try to go for a three-peat. Hopefully, makagawa tayo ng ganitong klase ng record."

A busy four-game bill banner Friday’s opener with EAC taking on UAAP in the first game set at 10 a.m.

Other matches pit Olivarez College against La Salle Dasmarinas (11:30 a.m.), UCN vs. PMMS College (1 p.m.) and RTU opposite CCM (2:30 p.m.)

Aside from basketball, other NCRAA events to be held this school year are volleyball, swimming, beach volleyball, athletics, table tennis, chess and badminton.

Back for another tour of duty with the Chiefs are swingman Orlando Daroya and top gunner Gio Ciriacruz. The team also acquired Harvey Igtos from Asian College of Science and Technology, which took a leave of absence this season.

Only St. Francis of Assisi College has so far scored three straight title wins, doing it in 2000 to 2002.

Dethroned by the Chiefs two years ago, the Generals, this year’s hosts, are aching to get back at their tormentor as they parade a new coach in Gino Manuel in lieu of Nomar Isla, who has been named EAC representative to the NCRAA board.

Isla, now the treasurer of the league, also graced the public service program along with NCRAA president Tisha Abundo of PSBA-QC, auditor Benjie Hernandez of PATTS College of Aeronautics, secretary Cesar Hagos of Olivares College, coaches Mel Alas (PATTS), Bong Arroyo (TIP), Yong Garcia (Universal College of Nursing) and Luz Ricardo, sales representative of Molten and Mikasa, the NCRAA’s official ball

Fr. Martin’s Cup : Archers Fall to Red Lions

February 16, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Posted by wackeekaren

Maybe they were tired from their respective dates the night before? Whatever the reason is, the De La Salle Green Archers seemed to lack luster when they faced the San Beda Red Lions last Sunday, February 15. They showed only spurts of energy as they fell to their second loss, 68-62, to the energetic Red Lions.

It was a close game during the first quarter, with the two teams making and answering each other’s shots. The quarter ended tied at 11 points.

The second quarter was a different story. The Red Lions started with a 7-0 run, before the Green Archers finally woke up from their stupor, nearly four minutes into the quarter. They answered with 6 straight points of their own to trim their deficit to 1, courtesy of LA Revilla’s trio and jumper, and Ferdinand’s split charities. Unfortunately, that was the closest that they’d get for the quarter, as they traded baskets in the next couple of plays. A very nice assist from Joshua Webb to Gab Banal, with 16 seconds to go in the quarter, brought them up 23 to San Beda’s 25. The Red Lions had the last hurrah in the half, though, as they managed to score a bucket, as time ran out, ending the first half, 23-27, in their favor.

During the halftime break, it can be noticed that the Green Archers didn’t go on the court for a shoot-around. Instead, they stayed huddled around their bench. Whatever they talked about seemed to work, as they started out the second half with another7-0 run, ending in a completed 3-point play from Norbert Torres. With the score at 30-27, in favor of the Archers, the Red Lions took the lead back with a drive and a shot from rainbow territory. The DLSU coaching staff called a time out at this point – which produced another burst of energy that saw the Archers holding their opponents scoreless for the next 2 ½ minutes, while scoring 8 straight points, putting them up 38-32. It seemed that they really can’t hold on to their lead, as San Beda regained their composure and took the lead back, yet again. The remaining minutes of the third quarter was reminiscent of the first, with the two teams answering each others baskets. At the end of the third, the score was tied at 47.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Lions opened up with a trio but the Green Archers made a basket to cut the lead by 1, with 8 minutes to go in the game. Unfortunately, that’s the closest that they’ll get as San Beda made basket after basket, and never looked back from there. By the time DLSU called for a time out, 6 minutes into the quarter, they were already down by 7 points. Things continued to spiral downwards as the Archers trailed by 9, 55-64, and Revilla fouled out with 2 minutes to go.

Final score is 62-68, in favor of San Beda.

Note : Hyram Bagatsing didn’t play in this game. The team standing is now 4-2. Their next assignment would be on Sunday, February 22, 2009 against San Sebastian College. The game would be again held at the FEU Gym at 10am.

Quarter Scores: 11-11, 23-27, 47-47, 62-68

wow! Jed Madela is also with DLSU :D

I know you're kidding with this one but it's Manguera. Anyways, any update to where Jeric Teng would really end up? I still believe that AdMU has yet to seal the deal. Oh how I wish to see the Xavier 1-2 punch playing for the Green and White

DLSU will win this years recruiting war. Vying for a spot on varsity next season will be the likes of Paredes, Banal, Manguera, Marata and Tolentino. Bringas of SSC will probably play for DLSU as well if not SSC. DLSU wants to sign another wing recruit but they will settle for a project who can step in a year or two from now given the 4 names mentioned above and the team still has Bagatsing, Barua and Malabes. If Atkins does not shape up, he may find somebody taking his spot on varsity. So where does that leave Teng and DLSU?

ADMU will not have a heralded recruiting class this year compared to last year but there will be enough material to challenge the current holdovers for spots on varsity next season. The backcourt of the future for ADMU will be Chris Penola out of Toronto and Kiefer Ravena. There are easily 8-10 guards battling for the 2 open guard position on the team. Excluding the transfers from Xavier of CDO and the Fil-something redshirts, there may be 6-7 players standing at least 6' 4" and up vying for the spot being vacated by Jobe.

Teng brings 2 things to the table. He is a known scorer but the opposition he has played against this year are suspects. Teng also comes to the program through the front door just like fellow Xavier alumni Ty T@ng and Chris Tiu. He has passed the ACET exam.
