Game Recap
Guys! I just came back from the game! It was freaking unbelievable! I haven't been that excited in a long long while! Gilas showed its true game a while ago!
Here are my observations from the game.
1. The referees were not partisan to Gilas at all. In fact one referee kept on making botched calls against Gilas. If ever it was us who were on the receiving end of very bad calls that allowed the Jordanians to claw back in the game in the 4th. He called Douthit with several fouls in the 4th and fouled him out on an outrageous offensive foul call that was utter bullsh*t. He also missed one call when Mac got pushed by a Jordanian player which led to a score by the Jordanians.
2. Our worst line up in the game was the one that had Chris Tiu, Mark Barroca, Marcio Lassiter, Japeth Aguilar, and Marcus Douthit playing together. Our best line up was this: Casio/Tiu (PG), Lutz, Lassiter, Mac Baracael, and Marcus Douthit. That line up absolutely killed the Jordanians. Not only did we run them to the ground, but it was a defensive joy to watch. They were pressuring all over the place. Let it be known that Lutz, Lassiter, and Baracael are tremendous defenders. Lutz and Lassiter had a lot of steals. Lassiter is an unbelievable defender. He basically shackled Rasheim Wright the entire night!
3. The Gilas offensive game was beautiful to watch. They moved the ball well and were open on a lot of their shots and that's why they made them. It was not a fluke. Gilas can shoot the heck out of the basketball. They set good screens and move the ball well. There were some instances where they stalled, but that was often because of miscommunication because Douthit seemed lost during offense.
4. Casio is way way better then Mark Barroca. I can't say enough about how good Casio was. He moved the ball well, set the plays quickly, made great decisions and shot the ball well. He was so clutch in the 4th quarter with those dagger drives, 3s and an amazing tear drop at the end game against the Jordanian team that made the arena explode. He made all the big free throws in the game.
5. Chris Tiu was an eye sore the entire game because he was mismatched at the 2 spot. There were a lot of us who moaned when he was brought back in the game, but boy did he prove us wrong! He manned the point in the 4th and made 2 crucial assists that extended the lead and changed the momentum! Way to go Chris!
6. Japeth played ok but was not intense enough in my opinion. But overall good game for him. He helped energize Gilas with a put back dunk in the 2nd quarter that brought the roof down and made a shot clock beating jumper to help extend the Gilas lead.
7. Mac Baracael was a stud in this game. He attacked the basket relentlessly and hit shot after shot after shot. This was the Mac Baracael of Dubai. In my opinion, we have to play this guy at the 3. Even if he is just 6'4/6'5 we really don't lose much with him. He's intense, fiery, driven, courageous, and is in attack mode for the entire game. He had this one cross over move that left the Jordanian player in the dust and he finished the lay up. He also had an unbelievable offensive rebound that led to 2 foul shots that helped Gilas halt the momentum of Jordan's comeback.
8. Marcus Douthit was a God send. Though obviously injured and hampered, he manned the middle well, grabbed rebounds, and intimidated the Jordanians. He has a good mid range game and posted up well. If not for that damn referee, he would not have fouled out. While watching him, you could see that he really had a high basketball IQ.
9. Greg played well despite the limited minutes. When he was in the game, he rebounded well and made shots off their high low play. He has a nice touch around the rim and is a good rebounder. During the 4th quarter when Douthit fouled out, there Greg was rebounding the basketball, scoring off a Chris Tiu pass, blocking Wright's drive to the basket. He's really improved a lot!
10. Zaid Abbas and Sam Daghles are monsters. And so is that other Abbas. Zaid Abbas actually got booed a lot because he whines so much. At the end of the game he even slammed the ball to the ground in a fit of rage because of the loss. Btw, both he and Daghles had 2 amazing dunks which you guys have to see during the replay. Ferocious!
Overall, great game by Gilas! They pressured well during defense, was physical, helped each other well. Rebounding was an issue but at least Douthit kind od negated that advantage of Jordan. He's so long and tall that he grabbed rebounds easily. Offense was fluid for the 2nd straight game. Gilas ran when they had an opportunity and capitalized on Jordanian turn overs. They moved the ball well and therefore, shot the ball well.
Last thoughts: After watching the game, I'm convinced we could have gone to the semis if Lassiter and Casio played during the Champions Cup. I'm not kidding. Those 2 guys are so good at offense and defense. They're such great scorers and shooters that they changed the complexion of the game when they were in.
Again great game! Hope to see Gilas perform even better during Jones Cup! Can't WAIT! GO PHILIPPINES!
