cesafi 2010...info and recruits....

  • Thread starter Thread starter ayemamba2
  • Start date Start date
how could you imagine a 9 man rotation team with a 6'1"-6'3" center in it's fold was able to withstand the pressure and was able to get a twice to beat advantage in CESAFI with a 5-2 card where it's losses came from the number 1 and 2 teams? it's amazing and stunning, isn't it? that's how you can describe the USC golden warriors. the wards of coach mike reyes almost pulled out in this year's edition due to lack of players because 6 of their recruits where disqualified to join. but they excelled so well that they exceeded far more than what was expected from them. kudos to coach mike and the rest of the golden warriors staffs and players.

Let's drink a toast to WARRIORS!!! Chug a lug lug...

what i want for the warriors is to oust either UV or UC so that it will become an incredible feat from an underdog team. although they will surely be happy even with just a cinderella finish.

CESAFI updates
BLEACHER TALK By Rico Navarro (The Freeman)
Updated September 05, 2010 12:00 AM

The CESAFI 2010 basketball season wraps up its elimination round today, and as all teams prepare for the more crucial and upcoming playoffs, the tournament has so far proven to be an interesting one from a number angles. There have been surprises, and the usual expected items.

For starters, the collegiate division has been a case of the expected with UV dominating the lot with an unbeaten run. The surprise here is that they’re doing this without Greg Slaughter. Just when many thought that UV would crumble with the departure of its prized Fil-Am recruit, it seems to have gotten stronger. The main difference this year is that there are no real superstars on the team and the Lancers are relying on team ball with everyone stepping up to contribute. On the other hand, the UC Webmasters have maintained their role as bridesmaid to UV for yet another year despite the presence of Junemar Fajardo. Fans were expecting UC to have an easy ride to the top with Fajardo at the helm, but UV has been the big obstacle along the way. But then again, it isn’t over til it’s over.

The playoffs is a and different story where everything goes back to zero.
Then we have the case of the hardluck crew of USC. Down to only a handful of players after some were declared ineligible to play, the Warriors have turned this situation into an opportunity to wake up and win games. They’ve become instant celebrities in the press just for being undermanned and seen to be an underdog each time they take to the court. They’ve won games that they expected to lose through sheer courage and heart. But how far will courage and luck take them? There’ll surely be an end of the road somewhere in the name of UV and UC.

The talk of the town in the CESAFI these days albeit on a smaller scale are the surprises in the high school or juniors division. If you look at the team standings at the end of the elimination round, you can’t help but notice that there’s a weird set of initials in first place. For the first time in CESAFI and CAAA history, Cebu Eastern College (CEC) sits on top of the pile with a 6-1 record that could become 7-1 if they won yesterday. Yes, this is the same CEC that was crushed by the traditional powers of basketball through all these years. The once trampled upon weakling Dragons are now real menacing Dragons who have been the wonder of the tournament. Although they lost to UV, they’ve proven that they could match up with the entire league and could find themselves in the championship unless something weird happens.

Another surprise this year has been the run of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), another school that used to be whipping boys when they were in the CAAA in the 90’s before rejoining the CESAFI last year. After a 4-5 record in their debut season, they’re now at 5-2 and could end their elimination round at 6-2 if they won over USJR yesterday. More importantly, their season will surely be highlighted by their upset win over UV last Thursday, 78-63. Although not considered as a serious title contender, the Magis Eagles have suddenly become a darkhorse team who could be playing the spoiler’s role this year.

If CEC and SHS-AdC turned things around after a year, last year’s champion and runner-up have likewise done the same, but the other way around. Defending champion CIT, now CIT-U, and USJR find themselves lodged at 6th to 7th places after having had Cinderella runs to the top in 2009. In a simple case of losing most of its core players, both teams suffered from manpower build-up issues that hampered their performances this year.

But just like the collegiate division, there’s still a long way to go, and this is where the likes of UV and UC will rely on their experience and history of excellence to prove that they’re still the top dogs of high school basketball. We must all remember that UV and UC were predicted to face each other in the finals last year, but CIT and USJR had something else in mind and scored upsets against the traditional high school powerhouses.

I’m sure UV and UC miss being in the spotlight and will go all out to make it back to the finals again. The big question is if the same thing happens this year? Will we see CEC and SHS-

AdC bring down UV and UC this year? Abangan!

That has been the CESAFI so far. It has been a UV and UC show in the collegiate division, but the high school scene has seen a few surprises with CEC and SHS-AdC crowding UV and UC for attention.

Eagles shock UV Baby Lancers; Dragons, from league doormat to hardcourt power

By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman)
Updated September 04, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles and the roaring Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons achieved separate records in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI), a momentous feat that will surely left an indelible pride and honor to their respective schools.

Games today (Cebu Coliseum)
1 pm USC vs. CIT (jrs.)
2:30 pm DBTC vs. CEC (jrs.)
4 pm UV vs. USP-F (jrs.)
5:30 pm USJ-R vs. SHS-Ateneo (jrs.)

The Eagles scored their biggest upset ever in the 10-year-old league when they upended the powerhouse University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers in dominating fashion, 78-63.

As a result, Sacred Heart gave the Dragons a free ride as the elimination round topnotcher, a landmark accomplishment for the Easternian community.

The 4-2 Baby Lancers, who will play against the USPF Baby Panthers today and the USJ-R Baby Jaguars tomorrow in the final day of elimination, have surrendered the first place to the Dragons even if the latter lose by a probable upset against the smaller and winless DTBC Junior Greywolves today.

Adrian Ronald Muller had a near flawless scoring, topscoring for the Magis Eagles with 25 points, 10 of in the fourth period. With the help of Adven Jess Diputado and Bradley Bacaltos, they subdued a late rally by the Baby Lancers.

They sang happy birthday right after the game as they dedicated their victory to school president Fr. Manny Uy, SJ.

Diputado, a nifty point guard, finished with 18 points, while Bacaltos, also an excellent guard, had a silent eight points followed by Henry Renzal Asilum with seven.

The Lancers, led by Gerald Legarde with 14 points, threatened in the third period when they cut a 16-point deficit down to just six points, 48-54, following a 13-1 rally.

However, Muller started to work hard again at start the fourth period to help the Magis Eagles easily regain control. From thereon, they maintained at least 10 to 12-point leads several times.

After padding their lead to 17-points, 76-59, in the final minute of the contest, the Magis Eagles just dribbled away the remaining seconds as they were already jubilant of the monumental upset.
The scores
SHS-Ateneo (78) - Muller 25, Diputado 18, Bacaltos 8, Asilum 7, Sing 7, Cadavis 5, Ochea 2, Abu 2, Suarez 2

UV (63) - Legarde 14, Aguirre 11, Mendoza 10, Smith 7, Suan 6, Nuñez 3, Dennison 2, Cenita 2, Flores 2, Ilano 2, Undaloc 2.

Lancers motor into semifinal round
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 11, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines – Nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers greeted the third period with a 10-0 run and never gave up to escape with a 70-60 victory over the University of Southern Philippines- Foundation (USP-F) Panthers in the lone collegiate match of the 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season last Thursday at the Cebu Coliseum.

From a close 35-33 halftime lead, the Lancers opened 10 straight points just after Lawrence Miguel Maraño tied it for the last time for the Panthers at 35-all at 9:23 to start the third period.

Just as the Panthers started heating up, Ralf Olivares provided the Lancers with quick offense as the Lancers extinguished the fire ignited by the crucial baskets from Jerome Silva, Adrian Lao and Phil Mercader.

Olivares led the Lancers with 14 points, Lao added 13 and Silva had 10 as they grabbed an outright finals berth.

Mercader and Harold Cincoflores did not finish in double figures but they had an excellent game for setting-up their open teammates for a good look at the baskets.

Maraño, an undersized post player compared to UV's Rene Jun Saycon and Andrew Avillanoza, topscored for the Panthers with 16 points to fill up the slack left by Fritz Dajalos, who struggled because of the Lancers' solid defense. (FREEMAN)

Beermen outlast CESAFI stars
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel (The Freeman) Updated September 25, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The San Miguel Beermen held a virtual practice session in their masterful 79-61 demolition of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) selection during their well-attended charity basketball match organized by the Rotary Club of Cebu South last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Game today

(USC-Main gym)

5 pm M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala vs. Alaska

Save for scoring the game’s first four points, there were no other significant moments for the CESAFI stars as they later became tentative on their shots and erratic on their plays, perhaps, intimidated by the visiting PBA heavyweights.

The CESAFI side greeted the game with a 4-0 bang, but the Beermen quickly replied with a 12-0 blitz to put the one-sided duel under their control for good.

After closing the first half with a 15-point advantage, 42-27, the Dondon Hontiveros-led Beermen maintained double-digit leads the rest of the way, the biggest at 21 points, 76-55, on Denok Miranda’s basket with two minutes left to play.

CESAFI’s only bright spot was its 6-foot-9 center Junemar Fajardo who firmly stood his ground against the formidable San Miguel frontline.

The University of Cebu (UC) giant aggressively muscled his way at the paint and at times broke the stifling defense mounted on him by the likes of Dorian Peña, Mick Pennisi and Danny Ildefonso at the shaded lane.

Fajardo, who topscored for CESAFI with 17 points, capped his decent showing with a two-hander slam.

“I was a bit nervous because it’s the first I played against a solid PBA team. I still have to practice more to reach their level of play in the future,” said Fajardo, a strong contender for the coveted MVP award in this year’s CESAFI cage wars.

San Miguel’s Arwind Santos provided a comic ending to the one-sided duel when he missed a turnaround dunk as the gameclock expired. The

former FEU Tamaraws superstar finished with seven points as Lordy Tugade topped SMB’s scoring chart with 13 markers followed by Jay Washington with 11 markers.

Hontiveros hit only three points, but his presence was more than enough to elictrify his multitude of Cebuano fanatics. Proceeds of the fund-raising event will go to his foundation as well as to the Rotary Club of Fuente South, CESAFI and other charitable institutions.

When the Alumni of CEC headed by businessman and basketball fanatic Chester Cokaliong got embarrassed when the team who was coached by Rex Salvaña got mangled and embarassed the other with record breaking losing margins by the other teams. They felt enough is enough and it's time for change. The alumni's donated several hundred thousands to look for talents in Vis-Min area to play for the Dragons. They hired Coach Jerry Jaranilla from Ateneo de Iloilo. Jaranilla traveled across the Visayas and Mindanao to scout for players and took four players from Bacolod in Nike Montalvo, Roy Vincent Villarias, Luther Nuevos and Marven Bauya. He also brought in three players from Davao in Benjamin James "BJ" Zosa, Mark Anthony Olayon and Jefferson Janes Roxas. The second top scorer James Neil Sumayang, hails from Bogo, Cebu but played for USC before. These players are the reason why CEC Dragons turned from weeping boys to contender plus Johnmar Lou Regidor, the son of assistant Coach Lou Regidor who was a former PBA player for the SMB beermen.

UNFAIR. I saw Ryan Aznar at the Ayala Center last Sunday. The sports manager of Southwestern University (and a commissioner of the Cebu City Sports Commission), Ryan was angry. Last week, his SWU men’s basketball team stunned the nine-time champions, UV, in an upset. It was the Cesafi collegiate semi-finals. As the schedule showed, SWU’s next game was against the loser of UC vs. USC—which turned out to be USC. And so, sporting a confident 1-0 record, they prepared—mentally and tactically—against USC. They aimed to go 2-0 in the round robin semi-finals. But, no—the day before their bout, they were informed (not through a formal letter—but via a text message from, of all people, the USC coach) that the schedule was changed. Instead, they’ll be playing UC. What! Ryan cried foul. “The schedules were finalized in September,” he told me, “and they tell us the day before that there’s a schedule change? This is unfair!”
It is. Why was the schedule changed? Was it to accommodate the giants named UV and UC, so the two won’t have to meet early? At poor SWU’s expense? If true, this is unjust.
And I believed the Cesafi was managed professionally, not like a “liga-liga” where rules, midway, can be altered?
Felix Tiukinhoy has some explaining to do. This issue is at the heart of sports—and why we play sports. It’s called fair play. It’s called “not playing favorites.” I hope Cebu’s David Stern, as I called Boy Tiukinhoy, writes to explain his side.

if SWU didn't want a UC and UV affair (which is what eventually happened), they could have let USC won by 12 or more in their final semis match up. it could have been a fitting retaliation to commish FT. looks like the commish has personal grudge against SWU dating back to the poligrates case last year.

SWU tried to win the game because they wanted to be in the finals since if they won over USC and UV's game against UC will then be a non-bearing game because win or lose SWU will move to the finals by virtue of their stunning upset at the start of the semis. but what happened in the USC game was, they were totally outplayed by the 9-man team warriors from the start of the game where lost by 11 pts. UV, USC and SWU both finished 1-2 in the single round robin semis while UC went unscathed 3-0. UV won over USC by the score of 65-54, SWU won over UV 52-51 while USC won over SWU 86-76. The Lancers held a quotient of 1.094, besting the the University of San Carlos’ (USC) 0.99 and Southwestern University's (SWU) 0.934. Had USC won over SWU by 12 pts. it could have been USC vs. UC or if SWU just won over USC, it could have been SWU vs. UC.

congratulations to CEC dragons for winning the 2010 CESAFI juniur division title

Am dissapointed .... I was expecting JunMar Fajardo to dominate CESAFI this year. Winning by one point over a Slaughter-less UV Green Lancers is an achievement but he could have done better.

Too much with the brag of UC and Ramon Fernandez that they could develop Fajardo as good as what Toroman can offer. :(

How many college eligibility years does JunMar still have at CESAFI?

“I did not expect that shot to go in. I can’t believe I made that shot because the defense was too tight and I couldn’t even see the ring. But I’m glad we really made it. I am happy that we finally broke the winning tradition of UV,” said Fajardo who was named Season 10 MVP, in his final year in Cesafi.

From the link.

And also, Fajardo scored 32 points in that championship game. i guess you have a very high standard for "domination"?

Bring in the Kraken ... that is for him to join the SG in the FIBA Asiad and SEA Games 2011.... He could bolster the RP team Big man rotation (Centers and Forwards).
