SMART GILAS Gulf Tour

The level of competition might not be as tough but we can play in the FIBA World Club Championships in October (if we win the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup) or the Haarlem Basketball Week (Dec 26-30 2010), the invitational tournament in Holland they were supposed to join December last year but was cancelled by the organizers.[/QUOTE]

How many will qualify for the worlds?

PLUS ! In March, Chris Lutz is already with the team. :D 3pt shooting show for Smart Gilas ! I see this team shooting it out with Korea in the Asian Championships. :p

Gilas will play an estimated 80 international games this year. Those 80 games includes a stint with Canadian National Team, New Zealand National Team, NBL teams, NCAA division I schools, Iranian National Team(before Turkey, ofcourse), Korea or Japan National Team, and teams from the Haarlem Basketball Week on Dec. 2010. Link:http://teampilipinas.info/2010/01/smart-gilas-5-to-go-all-filipino-in.html. It will be a great exposure for this squad. Regarding the FIBA World CLub Championships, I don't think we will be able to qualify(JUST MY OPINION). On the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup, some players, and teams are readying for Turkey and I think the competition will be higher. Asiad? Nah. Maybe it will be a morale booster for them, but Asian teams will just treat these games as exhibition games. Nuff said.

My question wasn't answered yet. Is it true that Australia will merge to FIBA Asia ?

1 Club from Asia. I hope(but it's unlikely !!!) that we'll win the Champions Cup. Imagine Philippines battling it out with Olympiakos or other tough European teams ! :p

MODS! :):D Can you edit the thread name to 'Smart Gilas Schedule' ? :D We can't have the 'Smart Gilas Gulf Tour' thread name for the whole year, it's kinda. odd. :p Or, the thread creator, can you change it ? :)

Let's lock this thread and create a new one entitled " Smart Gilas Schedule 2010."

Why would FIBA base the expansion of the Asian slot in the World? That is just not right and fair... I mean they should expand the slot for Asia regardless, so once other Asian nations see they have a chance to enter the world and the Olympic then they will try harder and even more harder for some.

Sometimes you have to put more rewards out for people to take notice.

Sorry off topic again for me ^^;;

i believe the olympic organizers/fiba wants to see competitive games in the olympics. maybe they don't want lopsided losses like what iran experienced in the olympics.

that's what I'm trying to say...this guy is 6'9 with wide body..Japeth and the rest of the guys will definitely gain something even in practices.it's hard to get players from the PBA,While waiting for Sampson's replacement Gilas could definitely use this guy.But in Fiba-Asia we got to have a big naturalized player who could do the job.

he's not 6'9...

Well if 200 pages were written for Smart Gilas's Gulf Tour I can't imagine how many pages would be filled if u guys made it to the Olympics :D
My guess is that the IBN server would crash for sure though :p

PBA and Smart Gilas

PBA and Smart Gilas

I think that on talent alone, the PBA can keep up with the best of Asia. The only problem that has plagued the PBA-backed NT in international competition is the lack of a system and a coach who has such system and someone who is very knowledgeable of the international game. Add to this the right training and preparation for the team to learn the international game and unlearn their bad habits that are not suitable for international competition. With these things in place, coupled with a Naturalized player to man the middle we can compete with the best of Asia.

I am not also in favor chastising PBA players, blame it not on the players but the basketball system that we have. They are what they are because they are brought up in a system that allows to become such. Again if this just to point out their failure in international competitions.

I think most of the PBA coaches are not adept or should I say not a fan of the international game. Chot Reyes and Tim Cone may make an argument that they have a system that can compete in international competition. The rest, I don't think it will work in the international scene. Our pro ranks or our basketball for years have been patterned with the American style of one-on-one and showtime type of basketball. Putting primary emphasize on individual skills and crowd entertainment. The problem when you rely too much on individual play and open type basketball is you won't get consistency in your games. One day you look impressive the next day you look awful. Notice our team when they compete in international tourney, that is exactly how they are. When you don't get the rebounds you can't run and all of a sudden you lose your advantage which is speed. It is much more difficult to beat a team with a good system than a team with highly skilled players with a poor system. I also believe that the PBA should expose their players with taller opposition if only to prove they are one of the best in the region.

I think we should put the PBA against the Smart Gilas to rest. Smart Gilas is the reflection or the reality of what our pro players could have been with the right system and conductor at the helm. Smart Gilas' success is just a reinforcement that we Filipinos can compete with the best despite our lack in ceiling. What should be important beyond everything else is that we should do what is best for the NT, whether getting some reinforcement from the pro ranks, naturalizing a player or recruiting fil-foreign player or what not. Our basketball crazy nation deserves the best it send to represent us.

Can't teach old dogs new tricks, only the new ones and certainly not basketball.

i don't fully agree on this one..we can teach them how to fit in a new system but it would take them longer to forget the old habits.. and when worse become worst old habits will most likely to come out.. that would be the problem..

and pls stop comparing humans with other animals.. even a dog is different from a cat

PBA players are like this..I could quit smoking anytime...but I won't

I think if the PBA is really sincere in lending PBA players, they should have let their guys join Gilas now or at least Let TNT trade some of their players for Kelly Williams :D.I think the Pros might have bad habits which they acquired in the PBA but that wouldn't be huge enough for them not to pass coach Toro.In the PBA they play less defense, wouldn't care much if they have an off night and play basketball play ground style:D.The question is,are they willing to break the habit?Coach Toro would certainly get furious if they hold on the ball for so long playing Milo best dribbling drills in the middle of the court. But sure, they can correct that.

I think they are talented enough to make the team and learn coach Toro's system but again they should ask themselves if they are willing to take the sacrifice of going overseas and training. They could hang out every Friday night and party till they drop. Here, they got everything they wanted cash, cars, girls, fame not to mention the perks they will get if they made it to the semis and the championship..They have less pressure from the press and from the fans, unlike Gilas that all eyes are on them including those who say Gilas can't make it.:D

Two questions..1)Can they break those bad habits they acquired in the PBA?(this is easy) and 2)are they willing to leave their happy lives here and bust their asses while training overseas with limited pay?(now here comes the hard part)
