Smart Gilas at the 29th FIBA-Asia Champions Cup (May 12-20, 2009) Thread

* The funny thing, is that "Andi Mark" was never this prolific in the UAAP. I credit it to Toroman to have brought out "Andi Mark"'s inner demon. Now I guess Anne Curtis will get a date with him. And not just a date, "Andi Mark" might even get lucky ......

* With Giles out, this would've been an opportunity for GS to step up. But so far, that has not happened with any of the "Smart Jelas"' games thus far.

* Imagine this team with Japeth, Rabeh, Sean, Marcio and Chris. It is going to be even stronger.

i think marcio is already out... :)

Big win by Smart Gilas!

Despite the absence of Fadi El Khatib, Al Riyadi was still a formidable team with its 2 imports and half of the Lebanese National Team (Rony Fahed, Omar El Turk, Brian Feghali, Ali Mahmoud, Bassem Balaa, and Ali Fakhreddine)

Kudos to our boys for not succumbing to pressure.

My mistake.

This "Smart Jelas" team is really special, for a number of reasons;
- Our import is not always the top scorer for the team, unlike other teams;
- We always have a balanced attack, even from our undersized guards. I mean, "Andi Mark", "Ebans" and "Kris-toper" playing 1, 2 and 3? That's a very short lineup (5'8", 5'9" and 5'10", all under 6'). But obviously very, very fast, and very sweet-shooting.

With Japeth playing number four (Baracael subbing him), and Rabeh subbing Giles, this is going to be a strong, fast team.

big big win even if Fadi is not around to bail the lebanese squad out

Yeah, but they have six National Players there, six of the best players in their country. And yet only their imports showed up to play.

the 2007 RP NT and the present smart gilas have gone a very similar route...

like the SG team, the 2007 RP team also went to las vegas, serbia. both teams had their share of won games against serbian and american teams

and both teams also participated in the asian champions cup where the 2007 NT placed fourth...

like the 2007 team, smart gilas also lost to the Iran team and won against the lebanese team.

too many similarities...

but i guess it ends right after this tournament. the 2007 team went on to play in the jones cup and a pocket tournament in manila and competed in the asian championships all in one year...

the SG team will continue on training for the next 2 to 3 years. they will reach full potential, unlike the 2007 team.

i agree.. they will fulfill their destiny with God's help and hardwork.

ok, let's compare...

2007 - san mig vs sabba battery (88-101)
2009 - smart gilas vs mahram (87-98)

2007 - san mig vs blue stars (94-83)
2009 - smart gilas vs al riyadi (91-86)

very similar performance...

Congrats for Smart Gilas!
About Riyadi, they might have 6 NT players but that is really not making them more powerfull but on contrary the team lacks chemistry and depends on 1 or 2 players.
I know very well Ali Mahmoud and i know that he can give more than that, the same goes for Rony fahed. The team is not sticking together, anyway all what i said do not reduce the big game that your players did today.

hey daniab, im asking you the same question i asked mohsena...

which do you think is stronger your NT or al riyadi?

bonus question: :) have you already found a player to naturalize in replacement of vogel?

Hey Manu_Bol,
its really a hard question but i guess the National Team is better with the new reinforcements and for sure under Dragan Racca' coaching.
Nothing new about the naturalized player, all choices are now possible including Vogel playing again this summer with the NT!

from your junior team?

ok. i think vogel needs to retire...

anyway, good luck to riyadi and your national team :)

imo this riyadi team is stronger compared to their NT. why? of the 12 lebanese players who played last fiba asia 2007 seven are playing now. 2 of the 5 players not included in the lineup were replaced by 2 imports.

2007 Lebanon: 11 lebanese nt players, 1 naturalized player
2009 Lebanon: 7 lebanese nt players, 2 imports, 3 new players

and those 7 who are playing now are part of the main rotation of players for lebanon. vogel aside, this is the core of the lebanon nt plus 2 imports.

now compare that to a mix of still-college students and just-graduated college students and an import who just finished playing college ball.

not bad for the 63rd ranked in the world.

Riyadi without khatib is vulnerable to any teams... anyweiz our RP team was beaten by Japan's youngsters in jones cup

i remember that game very well. that young Japan team had no set plays whatsoever but really outhustled our RP Team down the stretch.

our young RP Team is obviously well-coached, shoots the lights out beyond the arc, likes to run the fastbreak, and has an athletic 6'10-ish import getting garbage points and alley-oop dunks... all they need is more experience and a stronger front-line off the bench.

2 imports ? who are they ?
you mean Riyadi ? if yes they dont have 7 NT players but only 4 " Ali Mahmoud,Rony Fahed,Brian Beshara and Omar Turk" + Fadi El khatib who didnt play today.

Congratulations Smart Gilas it was another good performance and win
Andy Mark is a very good player, quick, good shooter and good defender too
All the boys know the system well and thier rolls well
In the first and second quarter it was smooth free flowing offense hence the lead but in the third we became slow and more of one on one again hence we lost the lead. But in the fourth the boys showed they are tough and have the heart to win.

Toroman's system is very basic and fundamentally sound
Offense is motion (almost like the Flex), pick and roll and weekside cuts
Very nice to watch especially when the boys execute them well
Everytime a RP player gets the ball he is in a position of threat, either pass, shoot or make a good play. The strengths of each player is used and they are producing well.
The basics are being reinforced by Toroman, like box out, good straight up defense by moving the feet, picks, etc. Very basic no flair no showtime and this is how the Phils will get better. We know we can create shots and do showtime but by going back to the basics we are now more efficient but still creative and fun to watch
Very proud and excited for the future of this team
GOD SPEED guys, good luck in the next games
We BELIEVE
