Guiao wants to use Krzyzewski’s style

By Rey Joble

YENG Guiao, the fiery national team mentor, who is back in the international coaching scene after 10 years of absence, may tear a page from the playbook of Olympic gold medal-winning coach Mike Krzyzewski of the United States Redeem Team.

Lacking in size but having the luxury of having athletic players on his squad, Guiao will use a fast and flexible shooting squad to offset his team’s deficiency against the taller, heftier and more physical opponents from the Asian region.

“From the start, that’s a given problem,” Guiao told Standard Today. “We have anticipated this that’s why we were bringing the idea of naturalizing a tall import.”

“But since this is already a problem, we have to make do with it and maximize our strength with speed and athleticism,” he added.

Guiao’s statement came on the heels of RP Smart Gilas’ 87-98 loss to the taller Iranians, who played in the Fiba Asia Champion’s Cup with imports.

He expects defending champion Iran to field in a stronger team in the Fiba Asia Championship this August, but believes the squad will no longer have players as tall as the one sent in Indonesia.

The Iranians have two or three 7-footers on the squad, including 7’3” Priest Lauderdale, who was supposed to suit up for Purefoods in the Philippine Basketball Association several years ago.

Still, Guiao, whose last coaching stint was when he served as assistant coach to Derick Pumaren in the all-amateur RP team in the Asian Basketball Confederation, rated Iran as one of the top teams along with perennial powerhouse team China and other Middle East countries like Lebanon and Syria as the teams to beat in the World Basketball Championship qualifier.

Guiao hopes Kelly Williams, who was forced to take a rest by his doctor after he was diagnosed with an ailment on his immune system, of a speedy recovery.

The most over used words in basketball "speed and athleticism" a common denominator for almost all asian teams except the height factor.

Guiao will use a fast and flexible shooting squad ? He believes this team is as good and as deadly as the sweet shooting South Koreans.

Iran will no longer have players as tall as the one sent in Indonesia according to Guiao. And so he expects the Persians "to play small" with Hadadi around and everyone knows exactly what it meant when a team plays small.

And he thinks that the middle east countries like Lebanon and Syria will be the teams to beat outside powerhouse China. But me thinks, he needs to fire his team scouts/consultants. He can't resign of course it's too late for that.

Sorry to say, I am not a Yeng Guiao believer, never was and never will be.

Omg! this is what parochial or isolationist national team program could bring..

inaccuracy in terms of dealing with opponents.

Neither the player nor the coach is the superstar, but it's the system - coach yeng guiao :eek:

So there we go, to the gutters.....:D

Malay natin si na psy war lang ni kots Yeng ang Jordan, Korea, Japan , Qatar, Kazakhstan and Taiwan

TRANS: Maybe he is now playing mind games to our foreign counterparts.
And I hope they have a very good scout and do not rely on themselves only old style indeed but cost saving:D

for yeng to scout i think he should try reading interbasket there are a lot of info here that he might use... :)

yeah! i think i need to to consult another eye doctor.:o:o

well then, what do we want him to do then?

play small according to guiao. what's wrong with that? that's who and what we are. toroman even uses three 5'10 guys at the same time and all three are playing major minutes. take advantage of your strength and fight. our strength will always be our guards. it will always be.

iran will not be that tall compared to what they sent in indonesia according from guiao. we'd be more happy to see 7'2" hadhadi playing for iran than a 7'2" import lurking underneath the basket.

all the odds are against guiao and the pba selection. but they'll be there fighting. all they want is support. the same support we're giving to smart gilas.

have faith.

I totally agree with you dude, but I still believe that even though our fellow Pinoy forumers here keep on bombarding Coach Yeng with all kinds of criticisms, they will still support our PBA-backed nat'l team..After all, the GILAS and PBA nat'l team do share common goal, and that is to bring back the b-ball pride and glory that we once had..:):):):)

From a filipino song for Al Arabi

Kung ano man dahilan ay di mahalaga basta sinasadya nila :D

TRANS; official Gilas -Arabi in quarters

I hope Arabi realize that they should face riyadi come quarterfinals not Gilas:D
