I was just wondering when will SBP decide who will be the holdovers among the aspirants for their NT..they might have conflict with the PBA draft this coming off-season. let me sight a scenario, for example, what if a player who is part of the national training pool has an uncertain status within the final batch of the team would he be allowed to opt in joining the PBA draft this coming next season? there will be no security (financially) for a player if they don't make it to the cut of the final players for the NT, wherein SBP claims that they will be paid like pros. hopefully, the cut would be announced before the PBA draft so that the players who will be left behind may continue to pursue their bread-and-butter on the PBA. :) just a thought.. :)

Can Ryan Buenafe cope up with the numerous practice sessions with the developmental team and with Ateneo considering he was reportedly struggling academically?

The same could also be said to Arvie Bringas because he will be an incoming college freshman next season.

boy .... you are not backreading the threads. It was already announced that majority of the players that was selected had opted to stay with the National Developmental Pool for the next 3-4 years. MVP has already promised Financial Packages that is commensurate to what the PBA is giving plus certain benefits that they'll give FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE POOL. 2011 is still very far to make a final cut. So why go to the PBA draft when you can also earn the same way plus by playing for the flag you have the luxury of traveling all over the world for free. Since the PBA is not willing to loan their players after 2010 then the scenario of having a shallow draft for the next few years is something that they must bear. But at least after 2012, they could be sure the players in the pool are all star material when they graduate to the PBA.

that's something which is still to be answered. Some would be asked the difficult question on what is your priority and you need to make a decision.

Sir Nardy, does the Las Vegas started already? If it did, how was it? And what if we also look on our neighboring countries, like Japan(who is number 33 in the FIBA rankings), South Korea, Singapore?? I am just telling what is on my head. Because as far as I know, Filipinos are almost all over the globe now. So I hope we try our luck on looking to every known country as possible.

BTW, Advanced Happy New Year to all! Cheers!!!

it's on April with Caloy Allado, Larry Albano and Jim Kelly still screening all those who are interested in joining.

I have actually sounded of tho several different agents, coaches and league operators around the world but we have not completely contacted all the Filipino communities around the globe. Do appreciate if we could spread the word to everybody out there. If you have contact info, we could facilitate it.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year too !!!!

MABUHAY ang TEAM PILIPINAS !!!!

So, Larry Albano is still around.
I recall him as our Coach in the 1983 SEA Games with Alfie Almario and Willie Pearson.

Larry Albano who was a Champion NCAA Coach for the Letran Knights is now based in the United States and the one handling the search for the Eastern part of the US in behalf of the SBP.

The Samahang Basktebol ng Pilipinas is working out plans to host several Southeast Asian Basketball Association tournaments including qualifiers to the strong FIBA-Asia events next year.

SBP executive director Noli Eala yesterday said they would bid for the hosting of the ninth SEABA Champions Cup and the eighth SEABA Men’s Championship tentatively slated March 3-7 and April 2-6, respectively.

The two would serve as a doorway to the import-laced FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in May and the FIBA-Asia Championship in August.

“We are studying our participation in many tournaments next year including these two qualifiers,” Eala told The STAR. “We also have a desire to host these two SEABA qualifying tournaments.”

Eala said SBP stakeholders headed by Smart and PLDT chair Manny V. Pangilinan including some managers and sponsors will convene next month to tackle the plan.

“By Jan. 21, I will be calling a meeting to discuss these matters with all basketball stakeholders, sponsors, managers and supporters,” said the former PBA commissioner.

The 25-player developmental pool under project director Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is particularly eyeing the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup as one of the tournaments they want to join aside from the Stankovic Cup in October and the 2009 Laos Southeast Asian Games.

Eala said the same team would start training on Jan. 7 before proceeding to Serbia in March and the United States a month after for more training camps before plunging into action in these events.

Eala also announced SBP’s plans of participating in, if not bidding to host, the seventh SEABA Women’s Championship June 1-5, first SEABA Under-16 Women’s Championship Sept. 26-30 and the first SEABA Under-16 Men’s Championship July 25-29.

The SEABA women’s tilt will serve as a qualifier for the FIBA-Asia Women’s Championship in the same month and the U16 Women’s meet for the FIBA-Asia U16 Women’s Championship in October.

The junior tilt for men, meanwhile, will stake a berth to the FIBA-Asia Junior Men’s Championship in November.

“These are the SEABA qualifying tournaments for various FIBA-Asia Championships in 2009 and we’re now starting to prepare for all of these,” said Eala.

The team, which recently topped an invitational tournament in China, was formed by the SBP last month with the ultimate goal of playing in the 2012 London Olympics.

Collegiate stars Chris Tiu and Rabeh Al-Hussaini of reigning UAAP champion Ateneo, Ogie Menor of three-peat NCAA titlist San Beda and JV Casio and Rico Maierhofer of La Salle head the initial roster of players that included Jason Ballesteros of San Sebastian.

San Sebastian high school standout Arvie Bringas and 7-foot Fil-Am Greg Slaughter of University of Visayas and Joey Deas, another Fil-Am hotshot from Rockhurst University in Kansas are also in the list.

Also in the roster are Ateneo’s Ryan Buenafe and Nonoy Baclao, Far Eastern U’s Mark Barroca, Mac Baracael and JR Cawaling, University of the East’s Marcy Arellano and Paul Lee, Letran’s RJ Jazul, University of Santo Tomas’ Dylan Ababou, La Salle’s Peejay Barua, University of Cebu’s Rico Fajardo, University of the Philippines’ Magi Sison and Martin Reyes and Santo Tomas’ Jervy Cruz.

Pampanga Buddies’ Terrel Theophile and Reedley’s Philipp Paredes complete the developmental pool.

US-based Japeth Aguilar and Gian Chu as well as many-time Best Import Bobby Parks’ son, Ray, are likewise being eyed to join the squad.

Pichay and MVP connection

Pichay and MVP connection

I wonder does these gentlemen work together in building our basketball program? I recall an earlier statement of former representative Prospy Pichay that he wants an all amateur team using European style of playing. Does anything ring a bell to you guys? MVP is now on the works of building an all amateur with Toroman as head coach (before the asian qualifiers) introducing the European style of play.

I think right now their rivalry is just for show, just for us Filipinos to get attention for the national team.

just my 2 cents worth.

i love to see this 2 gentlemen work together for the benefit of our national team.. with pichay connection in the palace as well as his resources and add to that mvp's own connection in the businessmen in the country..
i see a well funded national team and plus the exposures they will get when they compete internationally under coach toroman..add to that connection is the pba..if they were not reluctant in loaning their player to the national team,we can send our best national team when we compete.. i mean best because it composed of amateurs with talent and heart plus the help of players coming to the pba.. and with the resources of pichay and mvp,we can shoulder the insurance money that the pba teams are asking for whenever they loaned thier marquee players

the problem is that Pichay wants Graham Lim to head Basketball Federation and wants MVP to do only the financing. And as Politicians, they want the credit in whatever positive development on basketball to go to them. MVP does not want any politics to touch sports as much as possible and he wants to handle it the corporate way. On the first place, it was politicians medling in sports which ruined our tested sports programs before.

I don't trust politicians. MVP is the man.

i agree with you.. mvp did a tremendous job in heading our basketball federation.. he already formedthe developmental teams in men, both junior's team in girls and boys as well as senior team in girls,,aside the fact that he already planning to have training center in visayas and mindanao plus the north america's training center aiming to discover a talented fil am there..obviously he did that with help of eala, gregorio and many more basketball stakeholders

SBP reinforcing national pool with US-based players
By WAYLON GALVEZ

With the recent success of the Philippine developmental pool, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is planning to reinforce its team by holding tryouts abroad including in the United States.

SBP executive director Noli Eala revealed this yesterday with plans to invite former Ateneo star and current Western Kentucky University player Japeth Aguilar and fellow US-based player Gian Chiu in a training camp in April.

"Hopefully (we) include both in the team that will play in FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in May," Eala said.

The developmental team, mentored by Rajko Toroman, stunned China in the finals of the 1st China-ASEAN CBO men’s Invitational Tournament, 76-72, in Guangxi, China.

The former PBA commissioner also mentioned that Ray Parks is expected to arrive today with father Bobby Parks, a seven-time Best Import winner in the PBA, as guests of the Nokia-Pilipinas Youth Team and the SBP.

The young Parks, according to Eala, will join the under-16 tryouts to be conducted by former PBA mentor Eric Altamirano.

Eala also mentioned that the SBP is studying the possibility to host any or all of the SEABA tournaments, the qualifying meets for the World Championships and the Olympics, as well as FIBA-Asia Champions Cup.

"I will be calling a meeting early next year to discuss this matter with all national teams and managers/sponsors," he said.

The SEABA qualifying tournaments for various FIBA Asia championships in 2009 are the 9th SEABA Champions Cup Qualifying (for FA Champions Cup in May), the 7th SEABA Championship for women (qualifying for FA Women’s Championship in June), the 8th SEABA Men’s Championship Qualifying (for FA Championships in August), the 1st SEABA U-16 junior women (Qualifying for FA Jr. Women Championship in October) and the 1st SEABA U-16 Junior Men qualifying (for FA U16 Jr. Men championship in November).
