Gallinari heads back to Italy, ponders back surgery

"NEW YORK (AP) -- Knicks rookie Danilo Gallinari has left the team to meet with specialists in Italy and is considering surgery on his ailing back.

Gallinari has been troubled by the back since last summer and met with a fourth surgeon Tuesday in New York. The Knicks allowed him to return home for further opinions and expect him back by Monday.

The No. 6 pick in the draft missed most of the first 21/2 months of the season, but had a couple of strong efforts off the bench earlier this month. However, the Knicks said Gallinari, "feels his back is only 60-70 percent and thinks he has reached a plateau in his recovery."

Gallinari has averaged 6.1 points in 28 games, shooting 44 percent from 3-point range".

Szczerbiak could miss three weeks with knee sprain

"CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cavaliers forward Wally Szczerbiak could be out for three weeks with a sprained left knee.

Szczerbiak injured his knee in the closing seconds of the third quarter of Tuesday night's 97-93 win over the Orlando Magic. He underwent an MRI exam that revealed a sprained medial colateral ligament, the team said.

Szczerbiak has been a key contributor for the Cavaliers, who raised their home record to 30-1 and have a 41/2 game lead over the Boston Celtics for the best record in the Eastern Conference. The 10-year veteran has played three different positions and is averaging 7.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 21 minutes.

He missed one week earlier this season with a bruised right knee".

"NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Hornets center Tyson Chandler was scratched from the lineup because of left ankle soreness before New Orleans hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

Chandler sprained his left ankle in January and missed 16 games before returning to the lineup in late February, playing throughout a seven-game winning streak. But after Monday night's loss to Houston, Chandler said he did not believe his ankle was fully healed.

Hornets coach Byron Scott said Hilton Armstrong would start at center.

Barbosa left the game with 26.3 seconds to go in the opening period because of what was diagnosed as a hyperextended left knee. He was injured on a drive to the basket.

Heat's Wade sits out vs. Celtics with hip flexor

"BOSTON (AP) -- NBA scoring leader Dwyane Wade missed the Miami Heat's game against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night because of a right hip flexor.

The Heat star had played all 66 games, his longest streak of his career, this season before sitting out. The team did not say how long he would be sidelined, but he wasn't ruled out of games Friday night at New Jersey and Sunday against Detroit.

Daequan Cook started in Wade's place.

Wade is averaging 29.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.6 assists. Injuries limited him to 51 games in each of the past two seasons.

His absence came with the Heat in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 36-30 record.

Wade scored 32 points on March 11 in a 107-99 win over Boston in Miami.

In his next game, he had 50 points, matching his career high, in 52 1/2 minutes Saturday in a 140-129 triple-overtime win over Utah. On Sunday, he managed just 18 points in an 85-77 loss at Philadelphia

"I didn't have the energy," he said after the loss.

"HOUSTON (AP) -- Richard Hamilton sat out Detroit's game against Houston on Wednesday night, the second straight game he has missed to rest his strained left groin.

The Pistons were already playing without Allen Iverson (back) and Rasheed Wallace (strained left calf). The 6-foot-7 Hamilton has been bothered by the groin injury all season and sat out for the 10th time on Wednesday.

"The more rest I get, the better," Hamilton said. "I never got the opportunity to rest, other than the All-Star break. I got a couple of days off and I was starting to feel pretty good, but then I had to play. That was that."

Both were out of Wednesday night's game against the Miami Heat after being injured the previous night in a loss at Chicago.

Coach Doc Rivers said Powe probably will miss two weeks after spraining his right knee. Allen's hyperextended elbow appears less serious, but he could miss games Friday night at San Antonio and Saturday night at Memphis, Rivers said.

Rajon Rando played his fourth straight game with a sprained right ankle, and Glen Davis returned Wednesday night after missing four games with a sprained right ankle.

The Celtics already are without Kevin Garnett (right knee), Brian Scalabrine (concussion) and Tony Allen (thumb)".

"CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings were without top scorer Kevin Martin due to illness and fellow starter Andres Nocioni because of a lingering quadriceps injury for Wednesday's game against Charlotte.

Martin, averaging 24.2 points a game, first started feeling ill before Tuesday's loss to Atlanta, when he scored 31 points.

"He played through it but I think it came down on him in the travel here and this morning," said coach Kenny Natt, who told Martin to stay behind at the team hotel. "He has a bug."

Nocioni, averaging 10.9 points, has been playing with tendinitis in his right quadriceps that flared up after the Atlanta game. Natt said Nocioni will be listed as day-to-day.

Rashad McCants started at shooting guard for Martin, and Francisco Garcia got the nod at Nocioni's spot at small forward for the Kings, who entered the night with the NBA's worst record".

"INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Greg Oden will finally play in his hometown as a pro.

The 7-foot center is set to return to the Portland Trail Blazers' lineup Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers after sitting out for more than a month with a bone chip in his left knee, coach Nate McMillan said.

The top pick in the 2007 draft and former Lawrence North High School star sat out last season after microfracture surgery on his right knee, so he missed the Trail Blazers' visit to Indiana last season.

Oden was hurt in a collision during a game at Golden State before the All-Star break. McMillan said he expects the former Ohio State star to play 15 to 20 minutes.

Oden is averaging 9.0 and 7.2 rebounds in 46 games this season".

They are the first two games Dampier has missed all season.

He is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by Ryan Hollins, who scored a career-high 13 points in a 95-87 loss to the Hawks.

Warriors' Crawford asks for day off, misses 3rd game in row

"OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Jamal Crawford is missing his third straight game for the Golden State Warriors after asking for more practice time before he returns from two straight benchings.

Warriors coach Don Nelson sat the healthy veteran guard for both of Golden State's games earlier this week as part of his unorthodox plan to give more playing time to his youngsters. Nelson wanted Crawford back for Friday night's game against Philadelphia, but Crawford says he didn't think he was ready to jump back into action.

Crawford and Nelson claim they're still on civil terms, but Nelson's plan to arbitrarily rest Crawford, Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette has drawn criticism from Crawford's agent, among others".

"AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- The short-handed Detroit Pistons were down another regular Friday night.

Guard Rodney Stuckey missed the game with flu-like symptoms, leaving the Pistons with just one of their top five scorers to face the Los Angeles Clippers. He joined Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson on the team's injury report.

Hamilton missed his third straight game Friday to rest a strained left groin and Wallace (calf) was out for a sixth consecutive game.

Jazz's Okur leaves game after getting poked in eye

"OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Jazz center Mehmet Okur left in the first half of Utah's game at Oklahoma City after being poked in his right eye and did not return.

Okur got popped in the face when the Thunder's Chucky Atkins made a swipe at the ball as he ran by on defense. Okur crumpled to the ground for a few moments before being replaced and heading to the locker room with 7:41 left before halftime.

"I just wanted to stay on the floor because I couldn't see anything," Okur said. "It's tough."

Jazz trainers reported that Okur hadn't sustained any damage to his eye, but was seeing double.

"The doctors did a good job. They checked my eye, and [there's] nothing in there. My eye is fine," Okur said. "Just a punch. They say I'm going to feel a lot better in a couple days."

Okur, who came in as Utah's second-leading scorer with a 17.6-point average, said he couldn't really remember what happened on the play but he didn't think it was a dirty play by Atkins.

"Stuff like that happens," Okur said. "It's part of the game."

Okur had a welt on the lower part of his right eyelid an the whites of his eyes were noticeably red as he carried an ice pack in the locker room after the game.

"I feel a lot better right now but still not 100 percent," Okur said".

Knicks' Lee sits out vs. Magic, misses first game of season

"ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- New York Knicks center David Lee missed a game for the first time this season Saturday night against the Orlando Magic with tendinitis in his knees.

The Knicks did get back leading scorer Al Harrington, who missed the team's 121-94 loss Friday at home against the Sacramento Kings with a sore left Achilles'. Lee said he should be able to play again when the team returns to New York to face the Magic again Monday.

"I probably shouldn't have played last night," Lee said. "I'm not very good at sitting out. I thought my knees would have, specifically my right knee, would have loosened up. It's obviously just overused."

Lee said the tendinitis is in both knees but a little more painful in his right one, which had a brace on it during the loss to the Kings. Lee, who remained on the active roster against the Magic, is averaging 16.1 points and 11.1 rebounds this season.

"I only missed one game last year," Lee said. "And I plan on making this the only one I miss this year."

Raptors' Bargnani, Clippers' Thornton out

"TORONTO (AP) -- Raptors center Andrea Bargnani and Los Angeles Clippers forward Al Thornton missed the teams' game Sunday due to injuries.

Bargnani was out with a sore left heel, ending a streak of 130 consecutive games. He was replaced in Toronto's starting lineup by Jake Voskuhl. The only Raptors player to appear in all 69 games this season, Bargnani had not missed a game since Dec. 9, 2007, when he sat out a home victory over Houston.

Bargnani, the first overall pick in the 2006 draft, is averaging 15.1 points and 5.4 rebounds this season. He matched his season-high with 10 field goals and scored 27 points in Friday's 102-89 home loss to Charlotte.

Fred Jones replaced Thornton, the Clippers' second-leading scorer, in the starting lineup".

Heat's O'Neal misses game vs. Grizzlies with sore hip

Heat's O'Neal misses game vs. Grizzlies with sore hip

"MIAMI (AP) -- Miami forward Jermaine O'Neal sat out against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night with a bruised right hip, something he described as a minor ailment that shouldn't keep him sidelined for long in the Heat's postseason push.

O'Neal had been bothered by the hip for several days, starting when he tried to take a charge last week against the Boston Celtics.

He aggravated the injury in Sunday's win over the Detroit Pistons, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, and after a pregame huddle with team trainers and physicians, the decision was made to give O'Neal the night off.

"It's definitely just one game, just trying to calm it down, just because it's affecting the way I move a little bit and jump and stuff like that," O'Neal said. "So that's basically it. It's nothing to be worried about."

The Heat entered Monday 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the race for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, and 1 1/2 games up on Philadelphia for fifth place. After Monday, Miami will have 12 games remaining.

And if O'Neal gets his way, he'll play in all of them.

"We're not worried about it at all," O'Neal said. "It's just a precautionary thing. Obviously, I would like to play and the team would like for me to play, but it's the best-case scenario just for this particular day."

O'Neal has averaged 14.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in 17 games since being acquired from Toronto. Miami began the day in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

He's also second in charges taken on the Heat, despite not coming to the team until past the midway point of the season.

"I'm one of the rare big guys in this league, I'm almost sure, I may even lead the league in charges taken [among forward-centers]," O'Neal said. "You don't find a whole lot of that, who really puts his body in harm's way to protect the basket. Sometimes, the negative to that is you're going to get a couple of nicks and bruises."
