how much are the tickets? I'm beginning to change my mind but i still have doubts on bringing a camcorder to the astrodome, Its Pasay city notorious with having a lot of snatchers, crime syndicates and stuff.

Lithuanian MVP out of Youth Invitational

Lithuanian center Donatas Motiejunas, named as the Most Valuable Player of the recent FIBA-Euro Youth championship, will not be coming for the Nokia Manila Youth Basketball Invitational tournament starting this Thursday at the Astrodome reportedly due to an injury.

Despite the 7-foot-1 slotman’s absence, the Lithuanians still boast of two other 7-foot players and are still favored to rule the compact four-team tourney also featuring the RP Youth team and the national youth squads of China and Taiwan.

"We’ve been told that Donatas has been injured and will not be able to join the trip. Although he’s not coming, we still have to contend with two other 7-footers, plus the giants of the other teams," BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Noli Eala said yesterday.

National team coach Franz Pumaren echoed Eala’s statement, saying despite the absence of Donatas, the Lithuanians are still formidable.

"And let’s not forget China and Chinese-Taipei. These squads are practically the same teams that we will encounter in Iran. We will be very competitive and we can assure our fans that we will give it our best," said Pumaren.

The national youth team, which won the South East Asia Basketball championship earlier this year, is using the tourney to toughen up for the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship in Tehran, Iran, on Aug. 28 to Sept. 5.

The Philippines faces Lithuania on Aug.14, 8 p.m., shortly after the one-hour opening ceremony, with China and Taiwan tangling in the first game at 5 p.m.

That Donatas Motiejunas is a legit NBA prospect, what with his excellent performance in the recent FIBA-Euro Youth Championship. Too bad we won't be able to see him play here in the country.

Fil-Canadians to reinforce RP youth basketball team
08/12/2008 | 01:38 PM

MANILA, Philippines – The RP basketball federation is looking forward to play two foreign-raised Filipinos in the coming Nokia Manila Youth Basketball Invitational tournament that begins on Thursday at the Astrodome.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has recruited Filipino-Canadian Matthew Wright to add ceiling and hustle to the team.

Wright is a six-foot-two shooting guard for the Martin Grove high school in Toronto. He and six-foot-seven Norbert Torres, another Canada-raised Filipino, are expected to lead the squad.

“Wright is just the player we need. He is very aggressive, can shoot and defend. Torres has the same qualities. We are looking at these two players to lead us in this tournament and the Iran tilt," youth coach Franz Pumaren said.

SBP executive-director Noli Eala also said the team is eyeing San Sebastian High-School standout Arvy Bringas to provide firepower to the team backed by Nokia and Tao Corp.

“We’re arranging something with the National Collegiate Athletic Association so Bringas can join the team for the Nokia tourney. We need his scoring sock," Eala added.

The RP youth team, which won the Southeast Asian Basketball championship earlier this year, is using the invitationals to toughen up for the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship set August 28 to September 5 in Tehran, Iran.

The Philippines faces Lithuania on August 14, 8 p.m., shortly after the one-hour opening ceremony, with China and Chinese-Taipei tangling in the first game at five o’clock.

The next day, the Filipinos take on Chinese-Taipei in the featured match, after the Lithuania-China encounter. The final day of preliminaries will have the Philippines battling China after the match pitting Chinese-Taipei and Lithuania.

and the height too please... Are you guys gonna watch the games?

According to the Marketing Manager MR. Vic Victa it will not be shown on TV due to the ongoing Beijing olympics but you can watch on the venue for free. If you will just present a nokia model even if its an old one you will be in the more convenient spot much nearer but if do not have a nokia celfone then you will be in the gallery section.

I'll bring my Nokia 100 so no one would dare snatching it, i can hit em hard with that piece of retro electronics whenever they try to attempt to snatch it. :p

I bet the Philippines would end up last, after all they lack international exposure compared to the Chinese and Lithuanians. RP has only been to SEABA qualifiers and some scrimmages with some Fil-Am team which is an equivalent of a "barangay team" here. I'd say reinforce them with more Fil-Fors with more height.

Dude, who cares about winning the invitational? It's the experience and summary that count here, not the wins. It's not like we're gonna get eliminated from the FIBA Asia U18 tourney.
