UAAP season 87

I think players like Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate and SJ Moore should consider transferring schools rather than waste away their collegiate careers on the bench

Its official from Naveen

Bad move, and instead of building on his own legacy, he chose to continue his dad's. Oh well good luck to him then. I find it hard to believe KQ will stay beyond season 87, atleast topex got his contrsct renewed early and will still be around.

When it was Paras playing for UP or Ildefonso playing for NU it was lauded for son following footsteps and success of the father. When its Cortez playing for DLSU its not having his own legacy.

Double standard.

It could still be a bad move for sure but for plenty of other reasons.

why hasn’t kean baclaan made his decision? maybe he’s going somewhere else?

jacob cortez made the move in just 3 days. day 1 he said goodbye to sbu teammates, coaches and community. day 2 he publicly announced his departure from sbu. day 3 he officially enrolled at dlsu.

Jacob never joined a league that requires an SGL like the MPBL. Obviously with his skills he wouldve gotten an offer. Basically any top NCAA player that doesnt accept an SGL deal from the MPBL/PSL/Filbasket is a liability to leave for the UAAP.

Its not a double standard, and im speaking for myself, i for one was never a fan of playing for your father's alma mater especially if you have the ability to build your own legacy. And lets not compare those 2 to jacob. Jacob already established himself as the undisputed king lion. Did those 2 did something similar? One was coming off a disappointing us bid, another was coming out of hs and didnt dave moved out of NU and return to ateneo? Haha

You know why its a bad move? He couldve easily been playing overseas as early as after season 100, instead he has to undergo a year of residency and whatever stock he built would cool off. Not to mention when's finally able play, he ain't gonna be the alpha anymore unlike his role in beda where he has the ball 80-90% of the time. He has to share it, even be the beta to guys like quiambao*if he does come back) and baclaan. We won't even know the landscape of the uaap by then. So if the main reason for him moving is just to follow his dad's footstep, then its a pretty bad move for sure. Moneywise is RSA money that big compared to what he couldve earned overseas. But then again its his career, he already bet on himself once and won so i guess he's willing to bet on himself again.

He will definitely lose this time. Jacob was lucky he had a coach who gave him a very long leash inside the court. He is a turnover machine and a trigger happy point guard. He also had the luck of having laid back teammates who didnt call him out for all those bad shots he took and those unforced turnovers he had. LA Salle will be different. The atmosphere will be different. As laid back and a player's coach Topex is, he will not tolerate those bad shots and stupid turnovers. 2 to 3 turnovers, you are done.

As a diehard DLSU supporter, Cortez is nice to have... but I'm genereally indifferent just because this feels the dad wanting his son to clean out skeletons from a closet dated 2002. I honestly would have been happier if he stayed at San Beda because a year residency just makes him no different from an Evan Nelle.

Maybe he wants to cool down the cool cubs transfer for a while. Before he makes his announcement.

As another poster said, kb posted a throwback dagger.

Yes they both did something similar. Paras maybe failed to reach the NBA and was impatient with div1 ncaa among other faults but his accomplishments at reaching that level is something not all high school Filipino players can easily do. Ildefonso was a mainstay of youth national team, had just lead the eaglets to the championship and was hailed as next king eagle. Heck they both have their own threads here at IBN! Cortez was a quiet recruit, did not play internationally-none that I know of, backup player on his first two years then flourished on his 3rd, won a chip as one of the main guys on his team.

Different paths to success but none we should overlook.

The spin then was Paras coming home to play for UP, bring a championship after waiting x number of years like his father did for them in 1986. Ildefonso was being recruited by Baldwin and felt spurned by Dave choosing to go to NU to be with his father who was a coach there and a former player. Now same spin with Cortez - his actual statement was wanting to play in the UAAP but writers obviously want to hone in on that father's unfinished legacy.

I'm sure none of us here by now are naive enough to believe any of the stories why athletes choose which school to play for.

I think if you work hard and have innate talent (for sure some have more than others), you can build you own name in any university, league, branggay etc. regardless of who came before you.

Time will tell for sure but it doesnt help that his dad is his agent and that one of the first to break the news is a former teammate of his. Again no point in comparing to paras and ildefonso since as you've said, different paths to success. Sure, nobody in their right mind should fault him for moving, after he did deliver a championship, but career wise, it makes no sense for him to gamble it all again just to fulfill his or his dad's dream. Don't get me wrong, the fan in me wants him to succeed, but I wouldnt be surprised as well if the move to taft doesnt pan out for him in the long term.
