SBP Long-Term National Pool (Vol. XX)

Maybe the bandwagon can start now to ease up Nardy's workload...:)

really need all the help we can get as MVP would have his hands full with the FIBA-Asia Championship hosting, Gilas, Amateur Boxing, Cycling, Taekwondo, Badminton, Football, Lawn Tennis, Golf, Running, Triathlon, etc

after August would be a bit too late as the 1st U18 FIBA Asia 3X3 for Men is scheduled this May in Bangkok, Thailand, its very important that we compete as in Asia FIBA ranked as #1 while they ranked as #14 Worldwide after the performance of Rayray Parks team at the last Youth Olympic Games. Then on September at Tehran, Iran, a few week after we host the 27th FIBA-Asia Championship scheduled is the 3rd U16 FIBA-Asia Championship for Men.

It would be sad to see if these batch of U16 players led by Kobe Paras would suffer the same predicament as that of the U18 team of JJ Alejandro wherein they had to practice without getting an allowance or was not even provided even drinking water for majority of the months in training as Energen was only able come back late as sponsor a few months before the team flew to the tournament proper at Ulan Bator, Mongolia after no new sponsor was gotten for the team. This U18 team was also the team which got stranded for a few days and were rescued thru rubber boats in a gym at Araneta Avenue when the fury of the Habagat rains flooded the surrounding area.

this is so sad. i really hope somebody will sponsor our team. any one you know part of the lineup sir nards?if this team is lead by kobe paras then i would presume this is a very tall lineup as kobe paras if im not mistaken is a 6'2 PG.

Yes Kobe is part of this team and he is about 6'4 already, hoping his current growth spurt will keep on going :D

WANTED: BENEFACTOR FOR U-16 TEAM

THE national under-16 team is looking for a benefactor for its training and participation in the Fiba Asia Championship in Tehran, from September 25 to October 4.

Head Coach Jamike Jarin told the BusinessMirror that the absence of a sponsor is weighing down their preparation for the tournament. But he stressed that in the absence of a backer, the team continues with its weekend practices.

The national youth program used to be bankrolled by Tao Corp., but its three-year sponsorship lapsed with Olsen Racela’s under-18 team that finished sixth in the Asian championship last year in Mongolia.

Jarin has a 25-member pool that includes Nieto twins Mike and Matthew and Jolo Mendoza from Ateneo; Kobe Paras, son of former PBA two-time Most Valuable Player Benjie Paras who plays for La Salle Greenhills; and Patrick Escoto, brother of FEU center Russel Escoto.

Perhaps Aktv can acquire philippine broadcasting rights even just replays? at least give sponsor visibility. Paconsuelo man lang sa sponsor.

So true. It could never start early enough for Nardy and the dedicated folks of the SBP who provide great service to our countrymen behind the scenes.

Just hopin' for the best given the segurista penchant of the business community and its tendency to buy in only when the winner is announced. :D

Nardy, how much to be main sponsor (meaning, brand name will be identified with team, say Smart Gilas Pilipinas or Energen Pilipinas) for U18 3x3 and U16 NT? Individually, and packaged both teams (meron bang discount kung package)?

Baka kaya na i bank-roll ni doc (DRRC) yan? :)

the U16 Boys National Team would need a sponsor for a budget of 9 to 10 million while its estimated to be 500K for the U18 Boys 3X3, thats operational only and would increase if we'll stage an invitational or if they'll train and play overseas.

i wonder why the big brother of kobe paras wasn't included in the last U18 team.

Andre is with La Salle Greenhills which plays as the junior team for the College of St Benilde and there was a conflict of schedule in NCAA Games. Hubert Cani who suited-up for Energen was forced to transfer to NU. Another Greenie, Gelo Vito who was also part of the U16 Energen failed to join the U18 and concentrated on his classes at Greenhills.

I will be saving for this I am hoping I can go to Palanga, Lithuania when Gilas hold their camp there. . Just one hour and half flight from where I am. . .

... and bring the beers that the sportsmanlike losers will send you (great tool to pry open a closed-door practice).

Our guys will only be too happy to quaff a few pints in-between brass-knuckle sessions with the Lithuanians. ;)

games are in Iran there might be no live TV coverage by the hosts like when they hosted the u18 before

I will become a minority in here. But in August I would see Sonny Thoss still backing up Marcus at 5.. Junmar is too slow and Greg is soft to be a bruiser..We will have to content on how Thoss can make the jump shot he usually makes..

You may be the minority but you make a lot of sense, that is because Sonny Thoss is at this point better all-around than Fajardo and Slaughter. Thoss is solid and tougher inside and not afraid to bang bodies, he may not be as a good shot-blocker than Greg but he has well-timed jump and composed put-backs better than the two.

My only concern with Thoss is his shot is coming from down low, which is a no no in international game.

The reality is that Chot is wishing Greg and or Junemar rose from his expectations and that the two would show respectable contribution in no time, who would not like these two wide-bodied giants for the Philippine team. However, Thoss was chosen for contingency measure, if the favored Greg and Junemar turned out a dissapointment in training, Thoss may steal the light from them and takes their place to support Douthit inside.

Thoss is also being eyed if he can play and shift sparingly at the 4, but the presence of Pingris, Williams, De Ocampo and Aguilar may make it hard for Thoss to get the final slot.

Sonny Thoss worked hard in last year's Jones Cup, this is the reason Chot is giving him a chance to be part of the pool.

San Beda Team Behold beats U16 RP Team 79-73 after trailing 51-58 at the end of the 3rd Qtr.

Coach Boyet Fernandez' Red Lions took advantage of the injury suffered by Mike Nieto after being hit on the jaw. With a key piece of Coach Jamike Jarin's rotation missing, the team lapsed into errors and even if the trajectory of their shots were on target, its either too strong or it was short of the ring. Also our weakness on free throws has been passed-down on this team. But this is a gritty group who are just playing thier 2nd game together and for young kids its good to see them get free from their defenders in implementing the DDO. They need more time to perfect the set plays and have to improve on their spacing. The more confident players were getting a loud lashing from Coach Jamike because of their tendencies to freelance and not follow the plays he wants to be executed. Kobe is really athletic and agile but being the tallest, he was forced to play Center, I feel we need a wide-bodied player as our players are more on the lean side. Kobe could not do the moves he made when the U16 Boys National Team beat the Joma Adornado-led Ateneo Team B in their 1st game after Sorela put-up a leech-like defense on him.

San Beda even though missing the Semerad Twins used their maturity and smarts to catch-up then finally get the lead from this very young National Team. Among those who suited-up for Team Behold are former Juniors MVP Van Abatayo, comebacking Michole Sorela, returnee Dan Sara, Tommy Babilonia, Jeric Estrada, one of the Nazareno brothers, etc.

Actually I like our defensive chances better with a center and PF combo of Jap and Ping , Ping playing on the ball and Jap weakside. Rather than a combo of Slaughter with Ranidel .
Basically i'm saying in terms of big man depth chart either Greg and FJ are really the last men on the bench

There is too much to risk with Japeth around in the defensive end, yes, he is good from the weakside but his softness would kill our defense before he can help from the weakside. Believe me, a Ranidel de Ocampo would be a better defensive team-up with Ping as this guy of TNT has a mile of basketball sense in the defensive end than Japeth.

I am always surprised you often mention Japeth on defense as he is obviously does not know how to plan tough his feet on the ground and what he loves is to run after for a block shot which would not happen all the time.

I am no basketball guru, but it is just too hard to believe Japeth would make it in the final roster, pray for injuries then he will make it.

Japeth has a good outside shot, then he may fight it off with Ranidel fior that spot, but how can he dislodge the more seasoned and tested De Ocampo? Much more how can he dislodge Williams and Pingris inside? masyadong malabo.

Japeth is our future, but please not today. Too raw, too immature and comparatively poor basketball sense at this moment. I am pleased he is part of the pool letting him get the needed exposure. My biggest concern on him is he is one of the few that has very slow development. He is 25 right now...when Japeth? When!?

The first two games with Global shows otherwise. Yes, Aguilar is still a tad bit too soft, but his defensive reactions have improved by a mile. If he shows more consistency... He might convince Chot of tapping him in the final 12.

Both Aguilar and Pingris needs to prove they deserved to be in the final 12. Both of them have pros and cons, JA has more shooting range and lenth and Pingris is a established PBA defender. One thing to consider is Pingris haven't played internationally for a long time and he will be playing under coach chot's system. Good luck to both of them and and good health. GO Pilipinas!!!!!

Thanks for the info sir nardy. Good luck to Gilas Pilipinas. I hope I can go home and watch the game live with my father. Thank you for keeping us updated.

I really cant see ping ever being effective in international play. He is too slow for opposing SF (bahrami , Ibrahim ETC), no decent outside shot and way too undersize and skinny for Upper tier teams PF. Japeth may be a bit low in terms of reading things but he has the intimidation factor in him. Just knowing that he is near the basket would make those penetrators think twice. His obvious weakness is just that he would be clearly out boxed by those physical bigs. Pingris would also be out boxed just check ping against the extra rice boys. if ping would be our pf, penetrators would have all day slashing the lane..It would also be obvious that ping would be out rebounded come game time unless we play those smaller teams.. he would really have a field day and you guys would justify his inclusion but with UPPER tier teams.. Size wise and heft wise both he and sonny thoss would be an eye sore to watch. We should address our weakness. Gone are the notion that we are a small team. We should use douhit and japeth primaly as PF.. Ranidel and Kelly for short stretches.. Then use Junmar and Greg as our C's. Or we could opt for tall, athletic and fast team.. DOUHIT, JAPETH, DILLINGER, DAVID, NORWOOD.. this would really burn the hardcourt.. I think this would be our most effective lineup if it would click.. We could also replace dillinger and use castro instead..
