I remember growing up and spending hours upon hours shooting basketball on a basketball rim that my dad installed by the driveway of our house. Once I left the house for college; however, he ended up cutting the goal down and having to remove the concrete he had used all those years ago to install the hoop.
Today, if your children are into playing basketball at home, then you’ll want to find the best portable basketball goal available that is safe, sturdy, can withstand weather conditions, and fits the unique needs of your home,. Not only will this make your children’s experience practicing basketball more enjoyable, but will let their imagination really take off as they are sinking last second three pointers like Steph Curry or expanding their bag like Kyrie Irving.
We’ve reviewed several portable basketball hoops so you don’t have to. We’ve looked at a diverse set of hoops that can easily transported from the garage to the driveway into the backyard or onto the street (especially if you live in a cul-de-sac) to identify the best portable basketball goal on the market.
The 7 Factors When Buying a Portable Basketball Goal
No two homes or apartment complexes are really the same when it comes to picking the right fit for your soon-to-be new basketball hoop. Some of the factors that we recommend you consider before making your big purchase are:
- Where do you plan to setup the goal?
- How much room is there for the base of the goal?
- What height range do you want the goal to support?
- Do you have a preferred backboard type or composition?
- Should you get a break-away or old-school rim?
- What size of backboard is going to work for your house?
- Do you want to get a hoop that will grow with your kids or one that just works when they are younger?

We Review: The Best Portable Basketball Goals
#1 Lifetime 90040 Adjustable Basketball Hoop
The Lifetime 90040 Adjustable Basketball Goal is one of the more affordable and popular hoops on the market. It is really easy to assemble which makes it a great gift from Santa, and it features a fade-resistant backboard for those who live in sunny climates. Lifetime is one of the most established portable hoop manufacturers on the market, and this goal is an excellent choice for use in a home’s driveway.
The 44-inch polyethylene backboard is very durable; however, it may prove to be a bit small if you have older players in the hole. The goal is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10.5’ and it comes with a 27-gallon base that can be filled with sand or water. April left this review at the Lifetime Website regarding the 90040, “
Great Hoop, Even Better Customer Service. “I purchased this hoop last year for my son & his friends. It has been great until today when a tree service working for the city came out to cut down a tree & damage the basketball hoop. I called customer service to order a replacement part and to my surprise they offered to ship me the part at no cost. I spoke with a very kind and very helpful customer service representative. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for great products with a great company backing their products.”
On top of having a great product and awesome customer service, Lifetime has a YouTube channel that provides videos on how to assemble their products.
#2 Spalding The Beast Glass Portable Basketball Hoop
Spalding’s The Beast Portable Basketball Hoop is one of the higher-end options on the market. The goal features a shatterproof tempered glass backboard to go with a very durable rim making it suitable for all ages. It is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10’ and the large base holds up to 55 gallons of sand or water. Despite the weight, it also has multi-wheel coasters so that you can move it around easily. The backboard can be purchased in 54”, 60”, or 72” options, and it is very easy to assemble. The biggest con of The Beast is the price for those on a budget, but you cannot beat the quality of the goal for your basketball player. Don B left the following review at Spalding about The Beast right in the heart of COVID season,
“Strong, Durable Basketball Hoop “Strong, Durable Basketball Hoop. I purchased the 60″ backboard model in 2013, and it has been a super portable hoop that has brought great enjoyment to our family. I see many portable basketball hoops in my neighborhood that are propped up with extra sand bags on top, along with other “creative” weights to make their system not blow over. Not the case with The Beast.
Glass backboard provides great rebound action. Pole, base, and adjustment hardware are build like a tank. No fear of tipping, and no movement from shots. Fairly easy to move around various parts of our driveway, which is really nice…Overall, a great system that I would recommend spending the extra money to get a hoop that will last many years. Don’t be that neighbor that has to pile eight extra sand bags on a cheaper portable basketball hoop. Go for The Beast. You won’t be disappointed!”
#3 Silverback NXT Portable
The Silverback NXT Portable basketball goal comes with one of the best warranties on the market at five years. It features one of the most durable backboards out there for those with strong teens who like to test their limits with a pro-style, flex rim. The goal will be a challenge for only Dad to put together; however, so make sure you have help. It also has a larger base than normal compared to other goals on the market so make sure to measure the area you plan to install it before buying so it will fit. The backboard is made of polycarbonate and it is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10’with an option between a 50” or 54” backboard.
#4 Spalding Pro Slam Portable NBA 54”
The Spalding Pro Slam Portable NBA hoop is one of the popular models on the market that features an angled pole design to allow for more play under the basket than other portables allow. The goal is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10’ and comes with a 54” Polycarbonate backboard. The 34-gallon base provides a strong foundation for players to be able to hoop without fear of breaking the basket combined with the break-away rim for those who like to “lightly” dunk on their outdoor hoop. The goal has been on the market for more than six years and counting and continues to be a popular model amongst young basketball players.
#5 Lifetime 1269 Pro Court Height Adjustable
The Lifetime 1269 Pro Court Height Adjustable goal is another great, affordable option on the market for families. This goal is not only easy to put together; however, it is also great if you are trying to fit a goal into a tight space or location. The backboard is only 44” in size, so it will be a bit small for older players, and it is not a great hoop for practicing dunking unless you are gentle around the rim. It does offer the ability to be moved into the garage if you can’t keep a goal outside persistently, and it comes with fade-resistant graphics. The goal is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10’ and the backboard is made of Polycarbonate.
#6 SKLZ Pro Mini Hoop
The SKLZ Pro Mini Hoop is perfect for young kids looking to learn the game of basketball. This goal is not regulation size; however, it is affordable and offers a spring-loaded rim and shatterproof backboard for those that choose to dunk on it (not advised). If you don’t have a lot of space for your kids to learn, this will do the trick. The goal is adjustable from 3.5’ to 7’ and it is extremely easy to move around. A great starter goal, the backboard is 33” x 23” in size, and it is made of Polycarbonate.
#7 Lifetime 71524 XL Height Adjustable
The Lifetime 71524 XL is one of the best portable basketball goals on the market. It is extremely durable and allows for dunking while featuring a five-year warranty. The backboard is a bit thinner than some of the other goals; however, it is weather-resistant and combines a polycarbonate playing surface with a steel frame with padding on the underside of the backboard for protection. The rim supports dunking, and the hoop is adjustable from 7.5’ to 10’. The backboard measures 54” in size which is equivalent to other higher-end goals on the market for basketball players.
User Review: Katrina left this five star review on the 71524 XL on the Lifetime Website, “This didn’t quite fit on Santa’s sleigh, so when it arrived, my husband went straight to work secretly putting it together. Before we ordered it, he wasn’t quite sure that our 8 year old girl and 6 year old boy were ready for it yet, thinking we could just head to the park to play when each of our schedules allowed it. The big reveal was proof that they were.
The product is great! …We’ve already had the neighborhood kids give it a great workout! We feel very confident in the Lifetime product and look forward to watching our kids (8, 6, and 2) use it through their high school years and beyond, learning, yes, how to shoot a basket–but so much more!”
Best Affordable Portable Hoop:
Lifetime 90040 Adjustable 44” Hoop
The Lifetime 90040 Adjustable 44” basketball hoop is our top pick for those looking for an affordable solution for their home, apartment, or other location. There is a reason the 90040 has been around for so long. The affordability, size, and customer service that Lifetime consistently excels in are excellent. While the price is set at $229 from the manufacturer, you can sometimes find the hoop on sale from other online retailers.
