Beno Udrih, Slovenia
From
FibaEurope: Very aggressive combo
guard with nice athleticism. Lefty with good ball handling ability and
fundamentals. He has a good offensive package, hits 3 point shots with
regularity, is a good penetrator a very good passer and solid defender. That's
how one could sum up the game of Beno Udrih, Slovenian rising star and second
NBA ring holder, together with Rasho Nesterovic. Beno is one of the overly
talented young Slovenian guns that have been catching the scouts' interest in
the last couple of years. He started his professional career at just 15, signing
for Polzela. Things got serious after three years, when he joined Slovenian
powerhouse, Olimpija, with whom he got a taste of the Euroleague. After three
years in his home country, Udrih wanted to see the world. He split the 2003-04
season between Avtodor Saratov and Breil Milano. In the Russian Superleague, he
averaged 19,2 points and 4,2 assists in five games. In the "Lega", Beno was
given a diminished role and his stats plummeted to 10,8 points and 2,3 assists.
His next stop was Maccabi Tel Aviv, where his numbers were similar to those in
Italy. Udrih was drafted by the Spurs as the 28th pick overall in June 2004 and
joined San Antonio for the title run last season. His inexperience hurt him in
the playoffs, when his coach, Gregg Popovich, reduced his playing time from 15
to 8 minutes per game (he averaged 5.9 pts and 1.9 as in the regular season).
Beno joins the rejuvenated national team in which he hopes to change the course
of Slovenian basketball, after years of disappointing outings at European
championships. |
