The NBA 2015-16 season may well go down in the record books as the most comfortable season for the Golden State Warriors since records began. They won their conference by 6 games and their Division by an impressive 20 games.

Practically overnight they became the most watched team in the NBA, but that means they will well and truly be in the spotlight for the 2016-17 season. The big question is whether the Warriors realize just how much focus will be on them in the coming months of the season and how they will be able to cope with the hot and heavy expectations.

I say it’s impossible. Even though Golden State were already odds on favorite to win the NBA 2016/17 season, and the acquisition of free agent Kevin Durant has only heightened that expectation. With KD on the team, Golden State are now being referred to as a “Superteam” by fans and the media alike. Durant rounds off the Big Four that also includes Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Big players in sport often come with big egos as part of a package deal, it remains to be seen how well these four players can play together. Especially with outsized expectations of improving on a historic 2015-16 season.

A Pretty Good Pre-Season

Apart from a loss against the Toronto Raptors, the Warriors enjoyed practically a perfect pre-season, with a 6-1 record, many of the wins quite decisive, Golden State looked set for a confident start to the season. On an international level, Durant, Thompson, and Green were the Warriors players representing the Warriors in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. That team defeated Serbia 96-66to win the gold medal.

Early Butterflies and Meshing on the Court

In the previous season, the Warriors didn’t suffer their first defeat until the 25^th game, this year it’s taken just 48 minutes.

San Antonio Spurs had the honor (and ability) of being the party poopers by defeating Golden State 129-100 in game #1.

Small forward Kawhi Leonard was the MVP of the game from start to finish, he scored 35 points, 10 from 21 shooting and perfect 15 from 15 from the charity stripe. With his combination of midrange, defense, attack the basket and offensive rebounding, Kawhi was unstoppable. Try as they might, the Golden State’s retooled defense never stood a chance.

With so much expectation on the Warriors, they will be very disappointed to be humbled so early in what is supposed to a historic season. While much of the season lies ahead, Golden State will have to pick themselves up and get back to winning ways soon as they have games against the New Orleans Pelicans and the Phoenix Suns in quick succession.

The bad part of winning 73 games the previous season and pulling in the biggest free agent since LeBron James in the off-season? That winning anything less than 70 games the next season will be considered a huge disappointment.
