Who is Hansel Emmanuel, the one-armed basketball player? Height, weight, stats

You may already know Hansel Emmanuel, but didn’t know his name. Emmanuel is a basketball player who’s gaining attention not only for his impressive stats and athleticism, but for the fact that he’s doing all of that with one arm. If you’ve spent anytime surfing around basketball clips on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, you’ve more than likely come across one of the dozens of video highlights of Emmanuel.

Who is Hansel Emmanuel?

So who is this one-armed wonder and how did he lose his arm?  His full name is Hansel Emmanuel Donato Domínguez and as a small child in the Dominican Republic, a brick wall collapsed on top of him as he was playing with his friends. He survived but his left arm was too badly damaged and had to be amputated.

That would crush the dreams for most people, but despite this, Emmanuel was determined to follow his father’s footsteps, Salvador Donato, who was a professional basketball player, and emulated his heroes such as top NBA players.

After posting videos of his basketball play on social media, Emmanuel gained national attention in his native country and was featured on Dominican national media when he was only 16. In particular, Emmanuel caught the eye of Moises Micael, a pro who used to play with his father. Micael helped Emmanuel move to the U.S.A. in 2021.

Bucking the odds and a few surprising bets, the 6-6 Emmanuel received a scholarship to come to the United States and play basketball with Life Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Florida. The school hasn’t regretted the offer whatsoever, Hansel has been making an impression on the basketball court ever since.

Clearly Hansel was rarely deterred by his handicap and as a senior at Life Christian Academy, Emmanuel is currently averaging an 26 points per game that has earned him scholarship offers from Division I schools to play ball at the next level.

Hansel Emmanuel’s Rise

Emmanuel is gaining national attention for his skills and ability–especially since he is not playing on a team for those with disabilities. He is dominating other high school players and already looking to college, and professional, success. He was a major factor in leading his team to the Central Florida Christian Academy state title. Micael, the head basketball coach for Life Christian Academy, has helped Emmanuel further hone his ball skills.

Emmanuel’s impressive stats include 26 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists with 2.6 steals and 3.4 blocks per game. His talent has gained him a large social media following, and he’s been featured on ESPN. His first trophy–the state title–was achieved in his very first season of playing in the United States. On top of all this, he’s starting to receive attention from colleges.

Tennessee State University and its head coach Brian Collins gave Emmanuel his first college offer, and the university is a Division I school. Emmanuel is bound to receive many more offers as he showcases his skills during his senior year of high school.

Defying Expectations

Being one-armed not only can make it more challenging to complete tasks, but it also presents a unique situation in basketball. While many people have doubted Emmanuel’s ability to play, let alone his ability to excel, Emmanuel is finding ways each game to defy these expectations and rise above a pessimistic attitude. Instead of feeling hopeless, he’s focusing on what he can achieve.

For anyone who believes a one-armed, 6’6” kid won’t make it far in life, Emmanuel is proving naysayers wrong. He strives to stay persistent both on the court and off, and aims not only to make an impression, but to also give his all on the court to keep his family and fans proud.

Hansel Emmanuel’s Future

Where will Hansel Emmanuel go from here? It’s likely he’ll continue to make an impression and gain international admiration for his persistence. Once he finishes high school, he’ll have his choice of college offers and then hopes to someday play in the NBA. For now, Emmanuel is one of the first one-armed basketball players to get a division 1 school offer and national attention. He’s already defying expectations and playing his best; for Emmanuel, the only way to go from here is up.
