When Will the NBA Announce the MVP Award This Year? Probably This Week…

The NBA’s announcement of the 2024 League MVP is one of the most anticipated moments for league fans and the players alike. Typically, the NBA announces the Most Valuable Player (MVP) during the playoffs, historically the award has been announced in  May, but the timing has changed over the last decade particularly due to the pandemic, the introduction of the play-in tournament, the new in-season tournament as well as some schedule optimizations to better accommodate rest and limit back-to-back games.

You don’t care about all that, you just want to know when the NBA will announce the NBA award, so let’s dive deeper.

The NBA has actually put out a schedule for this year’s awards, but left out the NBA MVP announcement. Here’s the NBA’s official schedule

When Will NBA MVP Be Announced This Year?

To get a better sense of when the NBA might announce the 2024 MVP, let’s take a look at when the NBA announced the last ten MVP awards since 2014.

  • 2014: Kevin Durant, announced on May 6th, 2014
  • 2015: Steph Curry won his first MVP award and was announced on May 4, 2015.
  • 2016: On May 10, 2016, Steph Curry was voted the league’s first unanimous MVP .
  • 2017: Russell Westbrook was named MVP on June 26, 2017 during the NBA Awards Show.
  • 2018: James Harden, announced on June 25th during the NBA Awards Show.
  • 2019: The MVP for the 2018-2019 season, Giannis Antetokounmpo, was announced on June 24, 2019, during the NBA Awards Show​​.
  • 2020: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the announcement for the 2019-2020 MVP was very delayed. The league revealed Giannis Antetokounmpo as the MVP on September 18, 2020​​.
  • 2021: For the 2020-2021 season, the NBA announced Nikola Jokić as the MVP on June 8, 2021, also delayed due to the pandemic​​.
  • 2022: The MVP for the 2021-2022 season, Nikola Jokić, was announced on May 13, 2022, during the NBA playoffs​​.
  • 2023: Joel Embiid was named the 2022-2023 MVP on May 2, 2023, during the Conference Semifinals​​.

As you can see in 2014, 2015, and 2016, the NBA announced the MVP in early May then the next few years the league pushed it closer to the end of the NBA Playoffs in late June. Then there was the pandemic which threw the timing off for the league award announcements off in 2020 into September! Then the last three years, the MVP has slowly but surely gotten back into the early May timing. That looks to be the case again for 2023-24.

If you’re looking to place bets on when the NBA MVP will be announced with an online casino prepaid visa or bitcoin or cash or whatever the kids are using nowadays, I would bet that the 2024 MVP award on April 30th, May 1st and no later than Thursday, May 2nd based on the announcement schedule. Of the three dates, I think Wednesday, May 1st is most-likeliest the league will announce this year’s MVP.

Well we were off on our predictions. As of May 02, 2024, the NBA All-Rookie Teams and Rookie of the Year hasn’t yet been announced, so the MVP might not be awarded until the week of the May 6th. We’re not estimating it to be Tuesday, May 7th.

NBA Award Finalists

The NBA has started announcing finalists for the MVP award in recent seasons, adding to the anticipation. The finalists are typically announced before the playoffs begin, creating a buzz around the potential winners. The finalists represent the top candidates for the MVP title, based on their performance during the regular season​​ and for 2024 were announced on April 21st.

This season’s MVP candidates are all foreign players: Luka Doncic of Slovenia, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada and Nikola Jokic of Serbia. Each player has a great case to be named MVP this season, but if you’re curious how MVP voters have awarded this honor in the past, outside of a player having an amazing statistical season voters typically go with the candidate that has won the most regular season games. And if Jokic gets another MVP, he’ll join a pantheon of legends to have won three or more MVP awards that includes one-named icons like LeBron, Magic, Kareem, Jordan, Bird, Wilt, Russell and Moses.

Considering the pattern from previous seasons, the announcement of the 2024 NBA League MVP is likely to occur in very early May during the NBA playoffs. and likely when there’s games being played on TNT. Keep an eye on NBA news sources for the exact date, and expect an exciting moment as the league recognizes the most outstanding player for the season.
