The two remaining undefeated teams in the Tournament of the Americas will meet tonight. And though both have safely advanced to the next round, don’t expect Argentina (6-0) to rest any of their players. And don’t expect the USA (6-0) to hit cruise-control.
Some expected a Clash of the Titans when Brazil met the US on Monday because the Brazilians clearly had the second-most talented team in the tournament, but that didn’t turn out as expected.
If anyone learned anything from that game it was that it is simply not enough to have talent; what some are forgetting is the large role that experience plays in beating the elite teams. Most teams have shown some focus during their games versus the USA, but once the Americans put together a couple dunks or highlight plays, they lost their poise – which resulted in bad shots and turnovers – exactly what the USA is looking for.
And that’s what makes Argentina their biggest threat, even without Manu, Nocioni, Herrmann, and Oberto, they’re the best team out there. They might be missing their NBA stars, but they’ve proved in this tournament that experience and composure are their greatest assets. “We try to play calmer, organized, and the rest of the teams don’t like that,” said coach Sergio Hernandez,“If we tried to play more of a fast-break, athletic style, we would lose all our games.”
Let’s take a quick look at some of their players – Luis Scola was the 2007 ACB League MVP, has won a gold medal and a couple Spanish titles. Pablo Prigioni has been one of the Spanish league’s top playmakers, Carlos Delfino will suit up for the Toronto Raptors and five other Argentinians have Spanish or Russian league experience.
Argentina’s experience has been evident this tournament as the team has fought back several times from deficits (Panama, Brazil and Puerto Rico comes to mind) and have a two games under their belt in which they won in overtime.
The Americans, on the other hand, have yet to be challenged, but they’re up for fight tonight. “All we can do is go out there and fight. We’ll play to win. Maybe (the USA) will beat us by 50. Maybe we’ll win. I don’t know. I just know we’re going to fight.” said Luis Scola. Even so, the US National Team is expected to win the game by a handy margin, unlike other so-called Dream Team derivatives, this team has shown very little weakness this tournament.
Expect the US to be prepared and expect the Argentines to give them a fight. This promises to be the closest game for the Americans.
