After instituting new rules against flopping this season, the NBA and its fans knew it was just a matter of time before the first flopper was hit with a fine. After four different players had been warned for committing the act, the league finally got its first paying customer this week.

According to NBC Sports, Reggie Evans of the Brooklyn Nets was fined $5,000 for flopping during a 95-90 Tuesday night loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, becoming the first player to have incurred a monetary penalty in the history of the new rule. Of course, the fine is due to the fact that Evans is also the first repeat offender, as he received a warning during a 102-97 Nets win over the Boston Celtics last Thursday. A third violation for Evans would up the ante to $10,000.

As you can see in the video, the blatant flop occurred in the third quarter when Evans, passing midcourt, made brief and light contact with Metta World Peace and then proceeded to flail, throwing his arms up the air, which drew the foul call from the official.

Even though World Peace was called for the foul, he believes it should be up to the officials to determine whether or not a flop occurred.

“They should just let the refs ref,” World Peace said via ESPN.com. “They keep changing the rules. The refs are doing the best job they can. If you keep changing the rules they’re going to miss calls. And then we blame the refs for that. For these missed calls. If they stopped changing the rules, the refs would’ve been adjusted to this. They’re just trying to do their job. Back in the days, that was never a foul.”

Some agree with what the league is doing and some don’t, but we’ll just have to wait and see if the fines curb the behavior of floppers and Evans is our first guinea pig.
