While some NBA draft classes include clear cut generational superstar prospects like Victor Wembanyama in 2023, other years it takes time and experience to develop that classes’ stars over time. The 2024 NBA Draft was criticized for lacking immediate franchise-altering talent, drawing comparisons to the 2013 class where Anthony Bennett was selected No. 1 overall, as the worst draft class ever.
That’s jumping the gun a little as none of those drafted players even played one preseason game. Let’s give these young men time.
While the class hasn’t exactly produced any potential stars, there are multiple players from the 2024 draft class are making an impact early in their careers. Whether they’re contributing (and developing) as role players or emerging as Rookie of the Year candidates, these 10 rookies have made their mark in 2025 and look like key building blocks for their respective teams.
1. Stephon Castle – San Antonio Spurs
No rookie has been more impressive than the sturdy, mature and strong Stephon Castle. The San Antonio Spurs landed him in an ideal situation, where he gets to develop under Gregg Popovich, learn from veteran point guards Chris Paul and De’Aaron Fox with an easy target in Wenbanyama is a unique opportunity. Castle leads all rookies in scoring while also contributing with solid rebounding and playmaking. And the current basketball betting odds have Castle bringing home Rookie of the Year (and he’s our bet, too). Although his shooting efficiency needs improvement, his well-rounded game and coming in second place in the Slam Dunk content makes him the early favorite for Rookie of the Year.
2. Jaylen Wells – Memphis Grizzlies
Jaylen Wells’ story is one of the most fascinating in this draft class. Coming from Division II basketball at Sonoma State, he wasn’t expected to make an immediate impact in the NBA. However, Wells has become a key contributor for the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging 11.1 points per game. Despite being drafted 39th overall, he has outperformed many of the players selected ahead of him, solidifying his place in the Grizzlies’ rotation.
3. Kel’el Ware – Miami Heat
Selected 15th overall, Kel’el Ware didn’t see much playing time early in the season. However, after the Miami Heat faced internal drama surrounding Jimmy Butler, Ware’s role expanded, and he delivered. In his last 10 games, he has recorded five double-doubles, proving that he can be a reliable frontcourt presence. Now a consistent starter, Ware has emerged as a dark horse Rookie of the Year contender.
4. Zaccharie Risacher – Atlanta Hawks
As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Zaccharie Risacher entered the league with high expectations. However, adjusting to the NBA has been a challenge, especially while sharing the floor with Trae Young, who dominates the Hawks’ offensive game plan. Despite his growing pains, Risacher still ranks fourth among rookies in scoring and has showcased his versatility on both ends of the floor. If he develops consistency, he’ll become a crucial piece for Atlanta’s future.
5. Zach Edey – Memphis Grizzlies
At 7-foot-4 and 305 pounds, Zach Edey was a dominant force in college, and his size has translated well to the NBA. While he came into the league with lots of doubters, Edey has did just fine; he ranks second among rookies in rebounding and sixth in scoring while providing elite rim protection. The Grizzlies have given him a steady role in their rotation, and if he continues improving, Edey could become a major problem for opposing teams in the paint.
6. Alexandre Sarr – Washington Wizards
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft, Alexandre Sarr has plenty of talent but faces the challenge of leading a struggling Wizards team. At 7-foot-1, he is a defensive force, averaging 2.3 “stocks” (steals + blocks) per game. However, his offensive efficiency has been inconsistent, with a field goal percentage of just 39.7%. If Sarr can improve his scoring efficiency, he could solidify himself as the best player from this draft class.
7. Yves Missi – New Orleans Pelicans
Yves Missi has stepped into the Pelicans’ lineup as their new starting center after being selected 21st overall. The Belgian big man leads all rookies in rebounding and ranks second in blocks per game. While his scoring numbers are modest, Missi’s defensive impact makes him a valuable piece for New Orleans. If he continues developing offensively, he could emerge as one of the best big men from this draft class.
8. Dalton Knecht – Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers took a chance on Tennessee sharpshooter Dalton Knecht with the 17th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and he has already exceeded expectations. Shooting 35.8% from beyond the arc and averaging 9.4 points per game, Knecht provides the Lakers with much-needed perimeter scoring. His shooting ability ensures he’ll have a long-term role in the Lakers’ lineup as they aim to contend in the Western Conference.
9. Tristan Da Silva – Orlando Magic
A product of Munich, Germany, Tristan Da Silva was selected 18th overall and has steadily worked his way into the Magic’s rotation. After injuries to key players, Da Silva was thrust into a larger role and responded with a breakout 21-point performance against the Brooklyn Nets. His outside shooting (33.3% from deep) remains a work in progress, but at 23 years old, he has plenty of time to develop into a consistent contributor.
10. Carlton ‘Bub’ Carrington – Washington Wizards
The Washington Wizards are in full rebuild mode, giving their young players significant minutes. Carlton Carrington, selected 14th overall, has taken advantage of his opportunities, ranking second among rookies in assists per game. With little competition for playing time, Carrington has carved out an important role in Washington’s backcourt.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As these rookies continue to develop, the race for Rookie of the Year seems to be up in the air. Players like Castle, Edey, Risacher, and Sarr have already made strong cases throughout the first half of the season, and there is still time for others to emerge. This draft class may not have had a generational name at the top, but it is proving to be deeper than anticipated. Many of these players will continue to shape the future of the NBA, making 2025 an exciting time to watch the league’s next generation of stars.
