Nigeria upset Angola to win the country’s first Afrobasket — a historic event for Nigerian basketball.

The Nigerian D’Tigers came in as underdogs to the Southern Africa dynasty. Led by Chamberlain Oguchi’s 19 points and Olaseni “Shane” Lawal’s 12 points, they pulled out a 74-65 win withstanding a late comeback; holding onto a cushion they built up in the second quarter.

Nigeria last played in the AfroBasket championship game back in 2003, against the same Angola squad losing 86-65 in Alexandria, Egypt, so this was a bit of revenge a long time coming.

In winning their first ever continental title, the Nigerians also received an automatic spot for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The three Afrobasket runner ups Angola, Tunisia and Senegal have earned a place in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments which will determine the final teams for the 2016 Olympics.

Even with an NBA player (Al-Farouq Aminu) on his squad, Oguchi was clearly the star player for Nigeria. The 29-year-old three-point threat was named Most Valuable Player and was featured on the all-tournament team alongside Aminu, Carlos Morais of Angola, Makram Ben Romdhane from host Tunisia and Gorgui Dieng of Senegal.
