News & Notes Clutch Defense

  • CLUTCH DEFENSE: Generally the word “clutch” is associated with offense, but what of clutch defense?  ESPN’s NBA Fastbreak measured it simplistically by combining clutch-time steals and blocks.  And this is what they came up with…. with 2 minutes remaining and the game is within 5 pts, Manu Ginobili has 8 combined blocks & steals, behind only Dwyane Wade (18) and Jason Kidd (9).   Another measure as to why Ginobili is one of the NBA’s best clutch players.
  • Zydrunas Ilgauskas blocked 4 shots against the New Jersey Nets last night which included his 1,201th block which made Big Z  Cleveland’s all-time leader in that category.
  • Houston Rockets overtakes San Antonio for the  Southwest lead by defeating the Spurs 87-85. Behind Luis Scola’s 19 points, 17 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and game-winning layup.  Tracy McGrady who?
  • Pau Gasol has scored 20 or more points in the last 8/10 games including 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 117-109 win over the Chicago Bulls.  Seriously, without Pau Gasol’s consistency in the middle and Phil Jackson’s coaching, Kobe Bryant would have left the Lakers in a media firestorm.  Guess we’ll just have to wait another three years for that.
  • Hedo Turkoglu follows up a near triple double against Milwaukee (14 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists) with another stat-filling performance; 20 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds in leading the Orlando Magic over the New York Knicks 110-103.
  • NBA Draft 2009: Ricky Rubio or Blake Griffin? With the 6-4 point guard phenom in the draft, it could actually come down to that in the 2009 NBA Draft.  Rubio’s potential as a game-changing, possible franchise player is so tempting that NBA teams are willing to shoulder a multimillion dollar buyout and pass up on sophomore beast power forward Blake Griffin….   http://tiny.cc/rubio09
