History Behind the AT&T Center Construction

For a number of years, the San Antonio Spurs had played in the Alamodome, but despite the facility being built fairly recently (1993), the team desired a new facility that was more fan and basketball friendly.

Although the city of San Antonio and the Spurs had come to an agreement to build a new facility next to the Alamodome, the team ultimately partnered with Bexar County to build a new arena near Freeman Coliseum. The agreement included the facility hosting a new ice hockey team as well as the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Association multi-day event (this results in the Spurs always having to play an extended road trip each February to accommodate). Conveniently, the vote by Bexar County to approve the arena plan was held on the same day that the Spurs were awarded their NBA Championship rings for the team’s first NBA Championship.
