Euroleague Thursday Roundup: Two Playoff Couples Revealed


We have two new playoff couples after the end of day one from the last round of the Euroleague Top 16 phase. Olympiacos will face CSKA and Panathinaikos will showcase their skills against Real Madrid in the Top 8 phase of this years’ Euroleague. In order for this to happen Real Madrid needs to win in Kaunas tomorrow. We will see if the Spanish side prefers to battle against the Red or the Green side of Athens. In other fixtures that didn’t changed nothing tonight Fenerbahce Ulker beat Anadolu Efes and FC Barcelona lost to Laboral Kutxa.

Olympiacos Piraeus 68-65 Panathinaikos

In a game that decided which of these two teams will qualify for the playoffs from the third position Olympiacos succeeded to win in a close fashion. Vassiliss Spanoulis gave the reds a win with a three pointer in the last second of the game. Loukas Mavrokefalidis was the best individual on the floor finishing the matchup with 17 points and 5 rebounds.

Maccabi Electra 76-81 CSKA Moscow

In this game Maccabi has already locked the third spot in the group, but CSKA Moscow needed a win to keep their hopes for the first place in the group alive. The game was tied until the finishing two minutes, but then Sony Weems and Aaron Jackson hit back to back threes. They both combined for 32 points and led CSKA Moscow to an important victory in Tel Aviv. Tyrese Rice had a solid performance for Maccabi finishing the game with 14 points and 7 assists.

Lokomotiv Kuban 84-75 FC Bayern Munich

Lokomtiv Kuban needed a win with 25 points or more in this one in order to boost their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. They started strong and managed to build up a 15 point lead entering the fourth quarter. Then it looked like they lost grasp of the game and lost the last quarter by six points. This means that Galatasaray will qualify in the playoffs even with a minimal victory against already fallen out Partizan, which is a pretty realistic turn of events. Krunoslav Simon and Derrick Brown and 18 points each for the Russian side while Nihad Djedovic managed to score 16 points on 63% shooting for the visiting side.
