Chelsea F.C. hands lifetime ban to fan; condemns racism and discriminatory behavior

Popular Football club Chelsea F.C. announced that they put forth a lifetime ban to one of the team’s fan who yelled racist slurs at Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling at a Premier League game between the two teams at Stamford Bridge back in December 2018.

One of England’s most successful clubs, Chelsea has applied temporary bans to five other fans that were connected to the incident from the club’s internal investigation. Those bans range range from 1-2 years. Four of those bans were right after the incident when a video surfaced on social media which appears to be a Chelsea fan screaming a racial slur at Sterling as the England player (and citizen) retrieved the ball.

Chelsea’s investigation concluded that “racially abusive words had been used” by the fan. After the investigation, the club decided to punish the fan with a lifetime ban. The club leveraged video evidence, interviews with witnesses, as well as advice from lip-reading experts.

Chelsea Wins, But Suffers Black Eye

Chelsea ended up winning the match 2-0, but going into the game, it wasn’t a given.

After a strong start, Chelsea is struggling, and it looks like the team will be involved in the battle for the top four, but not in the championship contention. The Blues had an opportunity to change things up by defeating Manchester City.

The football predictions for Chelsea going in to the game were tight which made since because Chelsea wasnt playing well. At the time, Manchester City was winning with a long bench depth leveraged by Head Coach Pep Guardiola. All that said, Chelsea was expected to win.

Here’s what Chelsea said in a statement after releasing the punishment: “While the club respects the decision of the CPS, the question that it had to determine was not whether a criminal offence had been committed, but rather whether the individual acted in breach of the ticketing terms and conditions. The behaviour of all six individuals crossed the line of what is acceptable. There is no place for this behaviour at Stamford Bridge and a permanent exclusion was the appropriate sanction. Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour abhorrent and we will continue to operate a zero tolerance approach to any incidents of racism.”

Basically, here’s a football tip for fans, the players are humans too and don’t be racist. Would Chelsea fans have said the same to legend Claude Makelele? Chelsea ended their statement with a much more articulate perspective on whether discriminatory and racism will be accepted.

“We are clear and consistent in our condemnation of discriminatory behaviour and language and all fans should remember that their words and actions can cause offence to those around them and to the wider community. We will continue to work with our supporters to rid the game of all forms of discrimination.”

Bravo, Chelsea.
