Have Both Western and Eastern Conference Finals Ever Ended in 4-0 Sweeps? This Could Be The First Year

The NBA playoffs are barreling to the 2024 NBA Finals — and much faster than anyone expected. Both the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks took commanding 3-0 leads in their respective series and as of Monday morning were on the brink of sweeping their conference finals against the Indiana Pacers.

That night, the Celtics defeated the Tyrese Haliburton-less Pacers in another close game to sweep the Indiana Pacers 4 games to none; punching another NBA Finals appearance by taking two consecutive road games. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Indiana turnovers all played big roles in eliminating the Pacers in four straight games.

On the other side of the bracket, the Mavericks hold a similar 3-0 lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves and can seal the deal at home in Game 4 tonight. While it would be an interesting discussion point to have both Conference Finals bringing out the broom, realistically, we would bet on the basketball betting lines that the Timberwolves are going to come out with one win in Dallas.

The Timberwolves are simply a better team compared to the Pacers – hanging out at the top of the Western Conference all season. While he improved his defense recently, we know that Luka Doncic might regress to the norm defensively little tonight. However, if he doesn’t….

Have Both NBA Conference Finals Ever Ended in Sweeps in Same Playoffs?

With the Eastern Conference Finals ending in a Boston sweep of Indiana and a closeout game happening between Dallas-Minnesota tonight, we’re wondering if there’s ever been a playoffs where both NBA conference finals ended in sweeps?

The Answer: Nope, never. If the Celtics and Mavericks each win their next game, it will mark the first time in NBA history that both conference finals ended in sweeps. We know the NBA can’t be happy. Despite the close games, not only does this make for a boring post season, NBA Playoff games brings in millions of millions of dollars of revenue for the teams and the league.

It Almost Happened: Just last season in the 2023 playoffs, the Denver Nuggets swept the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the Miami Heat, after leading the Celtics 3-0, were pushed to a Game 7 before finally advancing to the NBA Finals. If Minnesota is swept by the Mavericks, both will continue as franchises that have never won an NBA championship. Neither the Indiana Pacers nor the Minnesota Timberwolves have ever taken home an NBA championship trophy, making them part of the group of ten franchises still chasing that elusive title.

Comeback from 3-0 Deficits: No NBA team has ever successfully rallied from a 3-0 deficit. Only four teams have forced a Game 7, but all ultimately lost the series. The teams that have gone up 3-0 have a pure 100% series winning percentage; standing at 154-0. As we watch to see if the Celtics and Mavericks can close out their series and make history, fans are buzzing with anticipation for a potentially unprecedented NBA Finals matchup.
