Allen Iverson Set to Officially Retire

One of the game’s most electrifying guards has decided to call it quits for good.

According to a Slam Online report, Allen Iverson is preparing to officially announce his retirement from professional basketball in the coming days. Iverson has not played in the NBA since 2010 and has not played professionally since 2011, but had discussed attempting a comeback several times in recent years. However, it now appears that he’s ready to hang up the sneakers for the last time.

Iverson last played pro ball in Turkey, but had opportunities to play in China and in the NBA’s Developmental League – both of which he did not pursue, as he held out for another shot at the NBA. Unfortunately, that shot never came.

Iverson will be remembered by NBA fans as one of the best guards in history. Considering his small frame (170 pounds), his achievements were all the more impressive, as his tenacity, toughness and fearlessness helped him average 26.7 points and 6.2 assists per game over his 14-year career with the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies.

In 2001, Iverson enjoyed his best season, winning the league’s MVP award while guiding his 76ers to the NBA Finals. He will end his career as a four-time scoring champion and as Philadelphia’s franchise record-holder in most 40-point games (76) and three-point makes (885). He also ranks second in franchise history in scoring (19,931), behind only Hal Greer (21,586).

Most fans will agree that there won’t be another player quite like A.I. His contributions to the game of basketball will never be forgotten.
