Prior to Holzhauer’s arrival on the show, the record for single-day winnings was $77,000 by Roger Craig. As of this post, Holzhauer has surpassed that seven times already turning the game show into his own personal ATM. Read that over.

That means that in his first 15 wins, his average game winnings of $75,678 was a record setting performance or was in the top ten of all time. To speak more to his domination, his worst performances of $27,190 and $38,926 would be considered really great games for every other contestant not named James Holzhauer.

Let’s not forget that he’s has had the game show’s first Perfect Game when he buzzed in 41 times and correctly answered each time.

How is Holzhauer Doing It?

Holzhauer told Wired his strategy is to “get some money, hit the Daily Doubles, bet big, and hope I run hot”, but there’s more to it than that. He’s not only mastered the critical timing in buzzing in before the other contestants, he’s also using the Forrest Bounce, a chaos strategy that resurfaced in 2014 when Arthur Chu utilized it during his streak.

Surprisingly (or not so surprisingly) Chu was derided for the use of that strategy; the same one that Holzhauer is now being celebrated for.

But we digress. Holzhauer’s unique ability to not only locate Daily Doubles, bet big on them answer correctly is the reason he’s completely killing it. According to FiveThirtyEight’s analysis, Holzhauer has uncovered over 83% of the games’ Daily Doubles and answered correctly over 90% of the time.

That’s not just a coincidence or luck. James Holzhauer was built for Jeopardy!
