Potential NCAA upsets, Cinderellas in the 1st and 2nd rounds of March Madness

Warning: Potential Spoilers The N.C.A.A. selection committee made their top picks for this year’s tournament bracket with Xavier, Kansas, Villanova, and Virginia being picked as the four #1-seeded squads. That’s good for them and they’ve earned it, but the higher the seed, the higher the fall. March Madness earns it’s name in part because of the lower-seeded colleges that come in and spoil the party (and hopes) of those blueblood teams dreaming of an NCAA title.

Below are some predictions  on the likeliest upsets that we think will happen in the opening bracket matches. We’ll go through each regional and choose the teams we think are most likely going to be this year’s Cinderellas. With several states set to allow

South Regional: Loyola-Chicago

Virginia is the #1 seeded team in the South Regional. Virginia took the title last time out in the Atlantic Coast Conference’ regular season and finished the season with two fewer losses than any other team in the division. Going into the tournament, Virginia will need to draw some inspiration from last season as they face some good opposition including Cincinnati, Arizona, and Kentucky.

However, the match likely to provide Virginia with a stern test is against Loyola-Chicago. Loyola-Chicago’s journey to the Missouri Valley Conference was made it by the absence of Wichita State. Not to take anything away from Loyola-Chicago however, Virginia needs to take its game against Loyola-Chicago seriously as Loyola-Chicago goes into that game on the back of a 10-game winning streak meaning confidence is very high.

Midwest Regional: Seton Hall

The top-seeded team in Midwest Regional is Kansas. This bracket has been touted as the ‘region of death’ by many as it also includes number 3 seed, Michigan State and Duke, the second seed. The games against Michigan State and Duke will be massive for Kansas but so too will be the game against eighth seeded Seton Hall.

Seton Hall has a tendency of beating the big boys as seen last season against Duke and Arizona so a potential upset against Kansas is very much possible.

East Regional: Wichita State

Villanova is the top seeded team in the East Regional, and maybe in the whole tournament. That’s in thanks largely to the teams’ triumph last year in the Big East tournament championship. The East Regional is not as competitive as the other brackets as Alabama ranks as the second pick behind Villanova to finish in pole position despite enduring a difficult season last time losing 15 matches including humiliating defeats to Ole Miss, Georgia, Vanderbilt, and Central Florida.

However, Villanova will have to fear Wichita state when the N.C.A.A. tournament starts. Wichita State is known as the ‘giant killers’ as of late, owing to its habit of beating the higher seeds regularly during March Madness.

West Regional: #6 Houston May Pose a Problem

Xavier is the #1 seeded team in West Regional, the first time the college has entered the N.C.A.A. tournament as the top pick. There are some tough matches for West Regional including second seed, North Carolina and fourth seed, Gonzaga. However, a defeat for Xavier can come from an unlikely team in the Houston Cougars.

The sixth-seeded Houston team has had little success in the N.C.A.A. tournament — we might have to go back all the way to Elvin Hayes-led team or the Phi Slamma Jamma team led by Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. Recent success doesn’t mean they will take this year’s tournament lightly. Even if they fail to win the tournament or progress to the round of 16 match-up, they will want to leave a mark by defeating one of the big boys so Xavier need not be complacent in their match against Houston.
