What is Trae Young’s race and ethnicity — is he mixed?

As of this post, Trae Young is the hottest young college basketball player today. Currently a freshman guard for the Oklahoma Sooners, Young has been nothing short of impressive; stringing together 25+ points and 10+ assists like a senior All-American.  .

As a result of some of his dynamic performances that Young has delivered already this season, not only do many believe the 2017-18 season will be his only season playing college basketball before heading off to be a sure 2018 NBA Draft Lottery Pick, but fans have become very curious about everything in regards to the young star’s personal life and background. Specifically, there are many that want to know what Trae Young’s race is — is he bi-racial or multi-racial?

Trae Young’s Basketball Career

Trae Young attended and played his high school basketball at Norman North High School located in Norman, Oklahoma. He started laying on the varsity team his sophomore year when he averaged 25 points, five assists, and four rebounds per game which helped his team with the 2015 area championship. He was also named the Oklahoma Sophomore of the Year that year. Young upped his game junior year of high school, increasing his averages to 34.2 points per game, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 rebounds per game.

His team would go on to win the regional title and Class 6A state championship, and Young was named the Oklahoma Player of the Year. During his senior year, he continued to improve his stats with a scoring average of 34.2 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 4.1 assists per game.

During his college career at Oklahoma, Young has continue to amaze fans and scouts with his game being compared to Stephen Curry. He scored 43 points on November 26th against Oregon, and on December 19th, he tied the NCAA single-game assist record with 22 assists while also scoring 26 points.

Why is it Important to Talk about Race and Basketball?

During the past two years, the United States, and the world for that matter has never been more charged when it comes to discussing race. In sport, especially basketball, we have a great opportunity to have productive discussions when it comes to talking about our favorite players and up-and-coming stars like Trae Young who are from diverse backgrounds and make fans extremely curious.

Although many people just don’t feel comfortable when it comes to talking about the cultural and ethnic background of their favorite players. We like to encourage dialogue on all matters related to our players to include race, community, and backgrounds (in a positive light please). Who are Trae Young’s Mom and Dad?

So, we have found that by taking a look at a player’s biological mother and father’s race and background, we can generally get some great insights on the player. Trae Young’s dad is Ray Young and is mom is Candice Young. His dad is African American, and he played college basketball at Texas Tech University and later pro ball in Europe. His mom is Caucasian and very fair in complexion.
