Sixteen African nations have commenced on the Ivory Coast for the Africa Men’s Champi
onships of Basketball (forum). The competition started on August 20 and will go until the end of the month, August 31.
Also known as the Afrobasket, the regional championship will be held at the brand new 8,000-seat Palais des Sports in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The 16 teams competing in the tournament are Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Congo, Egypt, IvoryCoast, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tunisia.

Angola has been the resident powerhouse, winning 10 of the last 12 Afrobasket tournaments. They’ll be looking for revenge against Tunisia, who defeated the Angolans in the finals of the 2011 tournament.
The winner of the tournament not only gets bragging rights as the champions of Africa, but more importantly, will automatically qualify for one of the three spots in next year’s FIBA World Championships in Spain. That tournament places that nation one-step closer to a spot in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. (See how the qualification works)
