While it seems unlikely that the Memphis Grizzlies will allow Marc Gasol to leave the franchise at the end of the season, it has not stopped a host of NBA teams from preparing to attempt to woo the Spaniard on July 1.

The San Antonio Spurs are the latest franchise expected to be in the race to try and tempt the 30-year-old to leave Tennessee when his current deal comes to an end. The Grizzlies have made it clear they intend on tying Gasol down to a maximum deal in the summer, but Gasol may decide he needs to move in order to join a team capable of winning the race for honours on a regular basis now he is over the age of 30.

Memphis have shocked a lot of people this season and currently find themselves at around 12/1 with Betfair to win this year’s NBA Championship, but there are more than a few who feel this could be something of a one-off for the Grizzlies and next season will be a different story. With that in mind, a move to the Spurs could be something Gasol is open to at this stage in his career. Having spent much of his career in the shadow of older brother Pau, Marc is beginning to get the recognition he deserves and the Spain international might feel this is the perfect time to make a move to a major team.

The Spurs might be among the favourites for this season’s title but it’s clear that the franchise have plenty of work to do this summer if they are going to maintain their position as one of the league’s dominant teams. The Spurs may have built their team through the draft and signing decent free agents to go with a spine consisting of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. But with one eye on the future, the Spurs could be set to change tact and there may be a real push this summer to snap up some of those high-profile players heading towards the free agency.

Gasol has really flourished over the past couple of years. He has caught the eye even more so due to the fact he has been playing in a mid-level Memphis team, guiding the Grizzlies into the playoffs for the past four seasons. The Finals are a real possibility this season due in no small part to the form of the big Spaniard. While there are much more naturally-talented players in the league than Gasol, the seven-footer is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds per game, but it’s been his work-rate and willingness to sacrifice himself for the team that make the centre such an important player for any team lucky enough to have him.
