Two NBA teams with Asian ties will honor the Lunar New Year with special NBA jerseys designed for the Chinese New Year. The Golden State Warriors play in the San Francisco Bay Area, a region that historically has had a large percentage of Asians — currently nearly 35% of the population identify as Asian/Pacific Islander.

“The Asian American population is very important to us,” said Chip Bowers, the team’s chief marketing officer. “We’re the Bay Area’s NBA team and we’re very bullish on building a stronger relationship.”

The Warriors will wear their CNY jersey when the San Antonio Spurs visit ORACLE Arena on February 20th.

The other team that will celebrate the Chinese New Year with new digs is the Houston Rockets. This is a team that featured all-star center Yao Ming for many years and brought Jeremy Lin from the New York Knicks for one up and down season.

“It brings great joy to me to see the Houston Rockets honor one of my country’s most important traditions,” commented Rockets legend Yao Ming, “Mr. Alexander and the Rockets have long embraced our culture and customs and made basketball fans in China a part of the Rockets community. I’m excited to ring in the Year of the Goat watching the Rockets wear the Lunar New Year uniforms.”

The Rockets will don their red sleeved NBA jerseys when they take on the Toronto Raptors at home at the Toyota Center on February 21st. Houston will also wear the jerseys during week-long Lunar New Year Celebration, so they’ll wear them on Mon., Feb. 23 vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves and Wed., Feb. 25 vs. the Los Angeles Clippers.
