This is one of the five regional qualifying tournaments for the FIBA World Cup next year in Spain. There are ten teams participating, the top four nations will get a spot in the World Cup.

Those ten national teams are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela (Click on any of the above countries to discuss their national teams).

The ten competing teams were randomly divided into two groups. The top four teams in each grouping will move to the next round, where they play the top four from the other group. Finally, the top four of this group advance to the semifinals and are guaranteed a spot for next year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup.

While the United States is in this region, they are exempt from this tournament having won the Olympic Gold Medal in 2012. By proxy of the Olympic gold medal, the U.S.A. has already automatically qualified for the 2014 World Cup Tournament.

This is the 16th Americas tournament and since the beginning of the tournament, only four nations have taken home the gold – the United States (6), Brazil (4), Puerto Rico (3), and Argentina (2).
