Brittany Griner slams twice in WNBA debut

There have only been a total of three dunks in the 17-year history of the WNBA up until last night. The highly-anticpated debut of Brittney Griner brought the dunk total +2. Watch Griner come off a pick and roll for the one-handed jam:

Now watch Griner take a loose ball and throw down a two-handed dunk:

Despite 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and WNBA dunks #4 and #5, the Phoenix Mercury got demolished in Griner’s first WNBA game, 102-80. With her slam dunk debut, the 6-8 Griner joined 6-5 Lisa Leslie and 6-4 Candace Parker as the only players to have dunked in the WNBA regular season.

Including WNBA All-Star games, there have been 6 total dunks before Griner’s debut last night. Leslie, Michelle Snow and Sylvia Fowles each have dunked once in an All-Star Game.

Griner has been in the news a lot in the last year.  Griner recently came out as a lesbian. She so dominated NCAA Women’s Basketball for four years that Mark Cuban said that the Mavericks would consider drafting her. No surprise that she’s set NCAA records for dunks – including three dunks in one game.
