Official Ja Morant Memphis Grizzlies jerseys are now available

Ja Morant in Memphis Grizzlies jersey

As expected,  the Memphis Grizzlies selected Ja Morant with the second pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, following Zion Williamson.

In his Sophomore season with Murray State, Morant was a stat sheet stuffer averaging a crazy double double that’s usually not seen in the NCAA. The 6-3 guard had a breakout season and averaged 24.5 points, 10 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals on .499 from the field in 33 games. Morant was a beast in the regular season, but really boosted his stock during the NCAA tournament when he put up one of the handful of triple doubles in March Madness history.

From Murray State to Memphis

Now that Morant college career is over and he’s officially a Memphis Grizzly, we can expect him to be the undisputed focal point and future of the team. That’s because Memphis traded away their franchise cornerstones this season. Recently sending Mike Conley Jr. to the Utah Jazz and trading Marc Gasol to the Toronto Raptors during the season.

That said, expect Morant to have the ball in his hand with full reign to showcase his skills with the Grizzlies this coming NBA season. Success in the NBA Is all about having the right situation, and though the Grizzlies will likely struggle the 2019-20 season, Morant is the front runner for Rookie of the Year.

Ja Morant Confident and Willing to Work

The impressive thing about Morant isn’t just the spectacular numbers he put up for Murray State, but his approach and work ethic certainly impressed scouts. When asked about playing in the NBA, Morant was humble but certain.

“There’s only one Ja,” Morant  said. “I’m a chill, laid-back type of dude. Very hard-working. Never satisfied. My IQ is the strength of my game and it allows me to make plays. I’m very confident and humble at the same time. I don’t speak too much about myself and my talent. Wherever I go, I’m going to try to make an impact and make my teammates better.”

That work ethic comes from not always being a top player —  Morant was unranked in his class.  The fact that Morant rose from unknown to a very good Freshman to the #2 pick certainly excited teams. No doubt he’s still growing, but when you couple that with his late blooming, versatility, and athleticism, we might be seeing the NBA’s next Russell Westbrook.
