Throwbacks: Utah Jazz are bringing back purple “mountain range” jerseys for upcoming NBA season

It’s all but confirmed by the team and organization: the Utah Jazz are bringing back their iconic mountain range jerseys next season.

These purple throwback jerseys are most-associated with the successful Karl Malone, John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek-led Utah Jazz squads of that 1990’s era are coming back, reportedly along with a secondary court design that honors the throwback style. They were also voted one of the league’s coolest jerseys by NBA players in an informal poll by Yahoo during the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend.

From the Wasatch to the Canyonlands to the Arches National Park to the La Sal mountains, the retro Jazz jerseys highlight the beauty of the state’s mountain ranges and mountain peaks that Utah is known for.

Mountains of Rumors

If you’re a Jazz fan, then this isn’t much of surprise. It’s been one of the more poorly-kept secrets as there’s been several leaks and sources and tweets the past couple weeks that the organization would bring the “purple mountain” Jazz jerseys back.

If the Jazz were hoping to surprise anyone, then this tweet with photos from the Jazz Nation fanpage account snuffed out any allusions that the official reveal would be a big deal.

“Nope,” the Hall of Fame point guard recalls telling the Jazz’s owner Larry Miller. “I didn’t want to change anything. The Yankees don’t change their logo. That was my attitude. So why do the Jazz have to change theirs?”

Not a surprise considering Stockton’s personality and conservative style, but that’s not what the younger players think of the purple jerseys now. Even though Stockton didn’t love the design at the time, these 1990’s throwback jerseys are coming back.

Former Jazz player Trey Lyles thought the purple mountain jerseys were “one of the best jerseys the Jazz ever had or, retro-wise, that there is in the NBA.”

Top of the Mountain

What will be a big deal this coming season is the re-tooled Jazz are looking to be serious contenders since well, the 1990’s when “Stockon to Malone!” was a common refrain. With the addition of Mike Conley Jr. and Bojan Bogdanović to an already solid team featuring third year guard Donovan Mitchell, defensive stalwart Rudy Gobert, and Joe Ingles, look for this team to make waves and be near the mountaintop in the upcoming season. We’re not sorry for mountain puns, whatsoever. If you are ready for the action, read this new handy NBA betting guide before the season begin.

With a crazy off season that saw multiple NBA superstars on the move and changing the NBA landscape, the Jazz added a couple strong pieces to their small market team.

Along with the new look Los Angeles Clippers led by Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the addition of Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers, and a hungry Portland Trailblazers team with more experience, the Jazz are often mentioned as not just contenders in the West, but a team that may not get a lot of publicity, but are serious contenders to bring home the NBA championship trophy.

So not only will the Jazz be in contention this next NBA season, but their going to look great when they wear their new-old mountain throwbacks.
