Injured Williams, Thoss to sit out SEABA

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios announced the “Final 12" which will participate in next month’s Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Championships in Medan, Indonesia.

“The coaching staff headed by coach Yeng (Guiao) decided to choose the players based only on one criteria," said Barrios. “Supposedly the competition is light in SEABA so they based the selection on health."

The healthiest 12 among the present 14 members of the Powerade-Team Pilipinas will be playing in the six-nation meet which is a FIBA-Asia qualifier.

“The deadline for submission of line-up is on May 22 (Friday). We sent it out (Wednesday) afternoon to SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) and they will send it to SEABA since the PBA has no legal personality to submit it directly to SEABA," said Barrios.

After Kelly Williams, Sonny Thoss of Alaska was the other player who was cut from the team.

“Coach Yeng preferred Sonny Thoss to rest his knee because he’s not needed to win the SEABA. He’s more needed in the coming Jones Cup and in China," said Barrios referring to the FIBA-Asia qualifying which will be held this August in Guangzhou.

“Both took the news well for not being included due to health reasons. They are both appreciative for informing them personally about their non-inclusion," added Barrios who personally talked to Williams and Thoss.

Meanwhile, Japeth Aguilar, the 6-foot-9 Fil-Am who played for Smart-Gilas Pilipinas will not be coming at the end of this month to join the team.

“He (Aguilar) asked permission if after the SEABA if he can comeback to the States to join the NBA development training camp and coach Yeng told me to let him stay there," said Barrios.

Instead, Aguilar will be coming at the end of next month or the last week of June.

Team Pilipinas hopes to win big in SEABA

MANILA, Philippines – Powerade Team Pilipinas hopes to play hard and win big in next month’s Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) men’s championship in Medan, Indonesia.

The six-nation SEABA tournament is a qualifier for the FIBA-Asia Championship, which will be held in Tianjin, China in August. The FIBA-Asia Championship is a qualifying event for the FIBA World Championship and the Olympic basketball tournament.

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said Filipinos have high expectations with the team. “The team wants to play hard in SEABA. The expectation of the country is that they win. We want them to win by 50 (points)."

Barrios said Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao won’t treat the five other teams lightly in the June 6 to 10 tournament. “We will not leave anything to chance will not let them have a walk in the park. We have to win by as much margin as we can."

Barrios added that the team will be back on June 11 and the PBA resumes Fiesta Cup’s season on June 14. The PBA takes a 10-day break from June 4 to 13.

Reigning PBA most valuable player Kelly Williams and Sonny Thoss will join the trip but will not play due to various injuries.

Guiao will still have practice sessions with the team from June 1 to 3 before they leave for Medan on June 4. The tournament opens on June 6. – GMANews.TV

            Philippines will thrash everyone

It's great that Philippines sends a PBA national team because though they will be thrashing everyone in their path their quality of play will eventually trickle down to the opposition and benefit them in the long term.

This is why the basketball powerhouses of international basketball have been able to compete with Team USA.

As much as i would love to send another team for this lowly tourney, for instance Smart Gilas or a PBL team, this PBA NT badly needs some avenue for them to coagulate and warm up before FIBA. So far, they've had a few games: against 3rd-tier Australians and a freaking PBA "all-star" team *roll eyes*. I guess joining this tourney should somehow help them a little bit.

Anyways, this whole short-term preparation in general sucks, as we all know. [If you look at the 2007 NT, they're way ahead of this current NT in terms of preparation but it was basically STILL considered cramming and not enough after all.] In spite of that, let's just make the most of this short period to get them prepared and warmed up, to some degree. Even this lowly qualifying tourney can help.
