Yes, I also agree he needs to bulk up, but let's not forget he's just 20.

Jon's right, though. It's true for almost all of those young guys. They're as thin as rails. The only young player who looked like he had the muscle was LeBron James. His body in high school was just amazing.

I still can't understand what these guys are doing there...He could play 35 minutes in solid Euroleague team and now he's another guys who's waiting his chance in NBA. That is pathetic already!

maybe because he wants to prove that he deserves a place in the toughest league in the world?Maybe because he wants to compete with the best players? Not everyone compromises with mediocrity you know, there are people who set high goals for themselves.

Straight forward let's not forget that he's been dealing with some serious back problems that have prevented him from playing much more games. And even now the team policy is not to let him play back-to-back games because of those injuries. I'm sure he'll earn his minutes when he's completely healthy (he's already demonstrating what he's capable of even if not being 100%). If he was in Europe the situation would most likely be the same. But I get your idea

Yes, lots of Europeans have flopped in the NBA, but plenty more have flopped in the EL. Remember, a lot of Europeans have become stars in the NBA!

Hughes, Gallinari Lead Knicks Past Hawks - March 5, 2009, AP Sports, by Brian Mahoney

...Danilo Gallinari scored a career-high 17 points for New York, which got March off to a good start after a 3-10 February that damaged its hopes of making the playoffs in D’Antoni’s first season...

Gallinari, the No. 6 overall pick in the draft from Italy who missed most of the first half of the season with a back injury, helped them overcome that with the best game of his short career.

He checked back in with under 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter and quickly had a driving layup and stepped back for a 3-pointer, helping New York extend a four-point lead to 79-72. The Knicks led 84-75 after three, and Gallinari nailed another 3 to open the fourth and extend the lead to 12.

He said he didn’t pressure himself to have a big night to replace Robinson’s production.

“Warming up I was just thinking about being ready. That’s my thought every time,” Gallinari said. “So I was not thinking about the situation of the team, how many guys we’ve got injured. I was just thinking about being ready.”...
The Italian shooter finished with 17 points (6-11 FGs, 4-5 3s), 3 rebounds, and 1 foul in 22 minutes.

15 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3s) for Gallinari today against New Jersey. NJ won and Gallinari had two of his shots blocked, even if it was a good scoring night.

Gallinari’s best games as a Knick came in the past week. He scored 17 points last Wednesday in a victory over Atlanta and had 15 points Sunday in a loss to the Nets. He has provided a number of clutch baskets over the last two months and has shown a surprising bit of grit on defense — a trait not usually associated with rookies, or with European players.

Danilo "the Rooster" Gallinari's future in basketball is at a standstill. Reports from New York say that he left the team and is now in Italy, discussing the possibility of season-ending surgery to heal his back, which has multiple bulging discs.

In games where he has played, Gallinari has been more than a bit player. He scored 17 points against Eastern Conference rival Atlanta and 15 against New Jersey. The potential for a star is in him, but not if his back continues to give him constant pain, limiting his movement both on and off the court.

Gallinari played for Olimpia Milano in the Italian league. In Olimpia Milano's games in Euroleague competitions, Gallinari averaged nearly 15 points and 4 rebounds per game, earning him the Euroleague Rising Star Award for the 2007-08 campaign.

Regardless of whether or not he has surgery, it would appear his season with the Knicks is over, as he still requires substantial rehabilitation according to Knicks officials. The Knicks' president says that a decision on surgery should be made by next week.
Danilo Gallinari - By MARK HALE, March 18, 2009, New York Post

The Knicks are at an important crossroads with a crucial player, as Danilo Gallinari's immediate and long-term futures are in question.

The impressive but ailing rookie forward, who's been dealing with back problems since July, left the team yesterday to fly to Italy as he contemplates season-ending surgery.

Gallinari made the call after not seeing his back improve with rehab. He's maxing out at "60 to 70 percent," according to the Knicks.

Surgery would keep him out two to three months, end his injury-wracked first season and deal a blow to the Knicks' playoff hopes. Gallinari may be shut down regardless of whether he goes under the knife.

That a 20-year-old still has pain dating from an injury suffered in July has led to mounting speculation he has a degenerative condition and more than one bulging disc.

On Monday, he visited a New York surgeon, and Gallinari plans to see two more surgeons in Italy, his home country, and return no later than Monday.

Team president Donnie Walsh expects Gallinari to see one more doctor after the trip - Gallinari has already seen four - and then have a decision next week.

"We've always known that there could be a possibility of surgery, but all the doctors advised us to do what we've done because there's a good chance that it could get cured that way," Walsh said.

"That's my question. Should we continue what we're doing or will surgery be an answer here?"

Gallinari missed all of preseason because of his bulging disc, then played the first two games before he sat out from November through mid-January. He returned Jan. 17, and has been able to play consistently - he hasn't missed a game because of the back since. But on the four-game road trip, Gallinari shot 3-for-14 while seeing his minutes diminish from 20 to 16 to 12 to six.

A couple of weeks ago, Gallinari - who was not available to the media yesterday - admitted his back and leg pain was not improving, saying, "It doesn't change much. ... I feel always the same discomfort for all the games."

As Nate Robinson said yesterday, "You should see how much treatment he has to go through just to come out for practice and games."

Coach Mike D'Antoni said, "Mentally, it was taking a toll."

Even if Gallinari doesn't need surgery, the Knicks didn't say for certain they'd let him continue playing.

"I think he could keep playing. But at 70 percent," Walsh said. "And so there is a time factor here that if surgery is the answer, we'd like to get it done as soon as possible, so that he'd be back in time for next year's training camp."

Gallinari Shuts Down Rookie Season, Back Surgery Looms

Danilo Gallinari has confirmed he will not play again this season with the New York Knicks.

The 20-year-old Italy international has also indicated that he is to have an operation in the hope of solving the back problem that has sidelined him for most of his rookie campaign.

"My season is over," Gallinari said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The doctors still have to speak among themselves and decide where and when to have it (surgery)."

Specialists examined Gallinari's back in the United States and last weekend he flew to Italy to see doctors in Milan and Verona before returning to New York on Monday.

In remarks to the New York media, Gallinari said: "We tried everything for eight months to figure out this problem. Last week, we were talking about this with specialists about the right idea and what to do."

If the surgery takes place, the aim will be to relieve pressure on a nerve in Gallinari's back which is believed to be the cause of the problem.

Gallinari played in only 28 games but showed on numerous occasions why the Knicks selected him sixth overall in last year's NBA draft.

"In terms of emotions, this has been a super season but it's not easy to play when you are not 100%," he said to Gazzetta.

"Despite this, it has certainly been a positive experience."

Gallinari has not ruled himself out of Italy's Additional Qualifying Round games for EuroBasket 2009.

If he does miss this summer with the Azzurri, it will mark the third straight year that Italy have been deprived of one of their most promising players.
